Appalachian State has won 3 of the last 4 App State -vs- GaSo games at Georgia Southerns' home field in Statesboro.

You forgot to point out he said "housed." Like, I enjoy Hugh Laurie as much as the next guy, but it's a bit much to act like App comes close to death every episode/game only to be miraculously saved by an a--hole.

Took it he meant hosed, but I try never to be a grammar nazi.
That's why they put erasers on pencils.

Why isn't the flexbone (or the Triple Option) used more in the FBS? You just opened Pandora's Box for GS fans. I'm not a big X's and O's guy. I watch a lot and usually see how a team performs overall and general trends of a game. My guess is that you may actually see more TO plays in the future for FBS (and NFL) with more and more dual threat QB's and defenses built more to stop the pass than the run. I don't think it will be the way GT, Navy, Army (now), and what GS ran; but you'll see more teams incorporate it. It's all about cycles and the evolution of the game. offenses are the first to change and then defense plays catch up. Just when defenses figure out one offensive scheme a new one arrives to take advantage of the new defense. Florida had a great defense for what they typically see (their D was very good, their offense just sucked), but they don't practice to stop the TO so they weren't able to.

I guess it's painfully obvious that we (GaSo) are a bit narcissistic. Some of us try to stay level-headed about our football but some are fanatical about it. If you get annoyed with us, please keep this in mind: both App St. and GaSo are thrilled to be here in the SunBelt (FBS) and highly respect each and every one of you.

Georgia Southern fans do not take this the wrong way, but everything about the school screams underdog. From the name, to the jersey, to the town it is located in, but when bigger name schools start to underestimate thats when you bite them in the A$$. Including beating Florida last year, to home field advantage,

Same could be said for App State as well. I love the new additions to this Conference.

Don't worry, we take pride in that.

Why is the triple option not used more?

Things move in cycles. The spread option fad is simply a variant on old theme.

If you are an older fart like I am or BOP or SwampBear, we remember that offense that Gus Malzahn runs. It's basically the old Houston Veer with one of the RB's split out as either a receiver or a quasi tight end and the QB taking his spot in the backfield.

It takes advantage of two things.
1. The propensity of teams to have recruited larger defensive linemen and even some large less mobile LB's. By not coming straight at them, they lack the lateral mobility to help on the edges.
2. High schools across the country have (mostly) embraced 7 on 7 football. You cannot practice a power rushing attack running 7 on 7 football but you can get your QB a lot of reps throwing the ball and you can get your receivers a lot of reps running routes and catching the ball.

The spread option is time limited though.

For a number of years SEC teams (for example) have needed defensive players who could stop Alabama or LSU (or even Florida's) power rushing attack. That means strong guys with bulk. Look at the Pac-12. For all the Oregon love, Stanford with it's beast offensive line has won the conference three of the last five years and took a division title in a fourth year.

Now in the SEC if you are a defensive coordinator say in the SEC West, what are you looking for on defense? Bulk to stop Bama, LSU, and Arkansas? Or do you want mobile guys to stop Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and arguably Miss St? If I'm Saban or Miles, I probably want to start thinking more about mobile players. I'll take my chances against the Hogs and one of LSU/Bama in order to stop Auburn, Ole Miss, TAMU and arguably Miss St. I won't build my defense around 2 games but rather four and chances are pretty decent that I'm more likely to see a spread team in cross-over games and non-conference.

If you are in the Big XII and you are recruiting big less mobile guys up front you are going to be in deep trouble because so much of the league is spread happy.

So eventually the trend will be for defenses to be ill-suited to stop power teams and when that happens, power football will gain the headlines again.

App should be higher. Something about playing in front of mountain women with visible arm pit hair screaming obscenities at you is just uncomfortable. 03-puke

Damn straight that's a good year. If we're undefeated at home, that means we're at least 7-5 (with games @NMSU and Ga St.)
