obviously CUSA bumping a school is highly unlikely but hypothetically, if they did, I would guess F A/I U would be the likely candidate.

Wouldn't make sense with UTEP available.

Not trying to say we'd have the upper hand, but UTEP is in the far corner of Texas, a full 7 hours to San Antonio, 8 hours to Dallas, and around 10 to Houston. It doesn't get them into Texas by much, and puts them FAR out of reach of most of the recruits.

To be truthful, I don't think FIU would have the votes to get back in the SBC. It was a pretty well established fact that the Western Schools absolutely hated traveling to Florida.

Florida recruiting is important, but many of our more Western based schools don't really recruit Florida anyway.

MWC would drop to 11 teams and would lose their championship game. plenty of reason to replace Hawaii if they leave.

interesting domino to consider if Hawaii drops and UTEP moves to MWC, that would leave CUSA with 13. CUSA could then-

1. Stay at 13
2. Add UMass
3. Add another FCS (please no)
4. Bump a team back to the Sun Belt, giving both CUSA and the Belt 12 members.

Why, there will be other football programs that will fold? Once that happens, there will be G5 conference realignment again. The CUSA and SBC today, will not look the same in 5 years.

UTEP would love to get into the Mountain West Conference. They would be in a better basketball conference, the travel is better and they can recruit California.

But UTEP is not in the heart of Texas. UTSA or Texas State would be better schools for recruiting Texas. The basketball for both schools would have to improve significantly in the MWC. But to be able to recruit both Texas and California would be a huge advantage for the MWC.

CUSA may decide to stay at 13 with uneven divisions. that would allow UAB to move to the east where they want to be.

I think UTSA would be the first choice of the MWC, followed by UNT and then Rice. The huge markets of San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston would be too appealing to the MWC for them to pass up.

UTEP

The MWC would beg and plead BYU to join them before going that route

Oh yeah - I completely forgot about BYU!

Maybe that means they should be in a conference.

That's correct. It was a badly-worded appeal for more state money. Football earns the largest profit of any UH sport and subsidizes the rest of the athletic program. There's no way it would be dropped, unless the entire program was shutting down or moving down to D-2.

The AD realized his mistake and issued a retraction as soon as he got back to his office.

UTEP

The MWC would beg and plead BYU to join them before going that route, but they'll ultimately go that route, unless UNM begs and pleads for NMSU, which I don't see happening.

CUSA then responds by inviting JMU...which balances out some divisional issues, but probably doesn't thrill the Texas teams. That wont stop all 11 SBC Programs from being linked to the opening, despite the fact only one or two may actually be interested, and CUSA wont be interested in either of those teams.

The Red Herring in the room would be if an Eastern Washington or high level Big Sky team expressed an interest in FBS, and would MWC take a chance on a move up.

I doubt there would be the votes to add in the east if UTEP left. Not only would the western teams be against it but it would push either WKU or MT to the west which I doubt either school would want.

As a conference that has high quality basketball, I'm sure they'd rather have UTEP. I'm positive they'd want Texas State, but UTEP would be their first choice. There are already some rivalries there and UTEP basketball would benefit the league (and UTEP's basketball would probably benefit as well).

That will certainly help recruiting.

Let's dump Hawaii all together, let them go back to being a territory, and split CA in two.
It's a win-win scenario.

Excellent idea, except instead of supporting them as territory, just sell 'em and use the money to buy cool stuff. Everybody needs cool stuff.

They'd be all in too " Bows or no Bows, you know da kine of cool stuff too bro" !
Spent 3yrs in the 25th Infantry Division on Oahu.
I'd hate to see them lose their team, being as they have no pro sports,
They seem to rally around the Rainbow Warriors

This.

If UTEP left, we'd stay at 13 or add in the west.
