RE: Week 1 predictions
question for any Georgia Southern fan, to the best of your knowledge, how is the team responding to the new coaching staff, and especially the new offense?

RE: Week 1 predictions
The players have seemed to really enjoy the new coaching staff. For one thing they don't have full contact at virtually every practice the way Monken did. I have watched us scrimmage once and most of what I saw was working on the passing game. We actually look like we can pass the ball --- imagine that. We don't really have an experienced running back at this point and there are lots of question marks about who will be our big running threat. Our quarterbacks at this point are probably our best runners.

Of course the Eagle faithful are somewhat torn. THe old school fans still would like to see the flexbone-triple option style of offense, but that is really not what Fritz is doing. We are out of the shotgun pretty much all the time now and the "freeze option" is more of what we are doing. The whole style of blocking has changed from all the cut blocks of the Monken era to more of a pro style blocking.

Honestly I don't know what to expect. In a poll on our website the general consensus is that we will be in the 5-7 to 6-6 record this year. I think our fanbase expects us to be competitive in every game. If we come out and are getting beat by 4 TDs plus it won't take long for the fans to start howling, expecially those who support the old style flexbone triple option offense.

From what I have seen and also gathered from interviews (and probably more importantly players dads). The players are taking well to the new coaches. It's a bit different coaching style than the somewhat militant approach Coach Monken took, that's not to say there isn't a fair amount of yelling happening.

This is just a personal observation, but I do think the change in coaching styles and especially the variation of offense has really helped spark a new interest in some of the players. WR's are going to be thrown to more, our OL isn't going to the ground every play. We have a VERY experienced OL this season and most of them have added a few lbs during the offseason that should help in pass protection. We have a dynamic group of WR's with the addition of a JUCO who can stretch the field and a freshman that should make an impact early.

Of course it's still up in the air how all of this will come together but there is a very positive aura around the team right now despite losing our top 4 Spring RB's to various reasons (2 academics, 2 police blotter).

You can take any GS prediction with a grain of salt at this point though. All we know is what we see in scrimmages and what we hear from coaches/players about practice, and those almost always come with a positive spin. According to them things are going well. We look at times like we are struggling in scrimmages, but the sloppiness of the blue/white game has gone away. Fritz has mentioned several times that he has been specifically working on our weak areas in scrimmages (our last scrimmage was ALL 2 minute-drill, OT) so very few fans have even seen what our bread and butter looks like and wont until that first game against NC State.

As far as my prediction goes, both teams have too many unproven/untested situations to really make a wise prediction. So on a hunch that both teams will struggle to get going early I say we win by 3 in a low scoring affair. 20-17 (100% homer pick)

You got that right, Chief. That is EXACTLY how it will go down if Troy wins. 04-cheers

That said, QB Brandon Silvers (ESPNs 2012 #27 HS QB, greyshirted '12, redshirted '13 - same path as four year starter Corey Robinson) has looked extremely good up through this point. He is very accurate and is a very underrated runner. He will gobble up yards on the ground. The kid can flat out play. He's behind an extremely veteran O-line, and has receivers for days. Worthy (WR-X) and Holmes (WR-Z) will be the joyous recipients of many deep balls over the season. The running backs and O-line have added a significant amount of muscle weight over the offseason. They have a chance to be a very very good offense.

NJCAA All-American Dontreal Pruitt (51 TDs, 6 were rushing, 7 INTs, 1 Sack), who's #1 rated NJCAA team broke the all time JUCO record for total offense (610 yards per game) is currently 2nd on the depth chart, but OC Kenny Edenfield said there's only a hair's difference between how the two have graded out.

From that all time record setting JUCO team, their running back signed with Georgia Southern (18TDs I believe), their top two receivers signed with ULL, and their top pass rusher (NJCAA 1st Team All-American DE) signed with South Alabama. There's definately some talent from EMCC floating around the SBC.

If the dual threat QB (Dontreal Pruitt) that Troy signed from EMCC doesn't take the starting job, he may end up at receiver. Fans say he looks like Jerrel Jernigan in how elusive he is.

My sentiments exactly on your stAte/MSU prediction. They can certainly hang with the red wolves for two or three QTRs.

And just to be clear...For the last 8 years Troy has had the best or tied for the best QB in the conference. That's with 4 different QBs leading the charge...We've heard the "You'll never replace him..." rallying cry of helpless SBC defenses every time.

These are the most talented QBs we've ever had. They are behind a veteran line, aided by veteran running backs, the most talented WRs we've had since '09, the spread we've ran since '06, and the OC we've had since '10. We are absolutely stacked on offense. The new QB could start slow, but by SBC play, it'll be back to the usual SBC defensive meltdowns. The usual suspects will be back in town to reprise their defensive roles in timeless tunes like "Ten Yard Cushion", "Who's That Over There???", "Slowpolk Safety", and one of the more memorable hits, "Clueless Corner". It's a lot like the movie "Groundhogs Day", game after game, season after season.

05-mafia

While we all know Troy's defense wrote these showtunes, everyone in the SBC will enjoy this season's annual and extremely predictable sing-a-long spectacular with unbridled enthusiasm. This could be the best field show ever. À bientôt!

bientôt...
