RE: 1984: W&M beats UVA at the buzzer
With 5,500 undergrads I'm sure there are a lot who love the Griffing and a lot who don't. The games I've been at, I have seen a good number of people of all ages waiting to pose for a picture with the Griffin. Full disclosure...I may have posed for a picture with him at the end of the first season.

This is not true. Most students dislike the Griffin. But again they aren't the target audience for a mascot. The real issue for me is when the cartoonish griffin shows up as a part of the athletics logo.
I am very confident that most students like the Griffin, certainly the ones that give a damn about athletics. I'm not saying there aren't some students that think the Griffin is silly, but they're likely the same ones that can't understand why football is more popular than stochastic calculus.
I'm very confident students don't like the Griffin, especially the ones who understand sports. There are definitely some people who like the Griffin, but they're likely the same ones who follow up their quidditch practice with a Disney movie marathon.
Not to be a jerk, but I just graduated and thus have 4 years of seeing students love the guy first-hand.
I will fully agree that the Quidditch team is pretty strange though :)
I too just graduated and in my 5 and a half years (hey it takes some of us longer) I never heard a person say a good thing about it. I think that the fact that he was introduced my freshman year and people don't like change played a large role in that. And yes I also have pictures of me posing with the Griffin.

Yes. Sorry, I should have made that more clear. I have never heard a student say a good thing about the Griffin.

Since when do W&M students sit around talking about sports much less the mascot? Is there a Griffin popularity poll that I may review?

You just have to know the right students. Being on the exec board of Tribal Fever helped. All we did was talk about sports for hours on end

So, a handful of Tribal Fever students speaks on behalf of 6,000 students? I know 20 people who love Griffin so I guess our empirical research is a wash.

I WISH that the exec board was representative of the student body. Sadly that was not the case

Folks do realize, right, that you can just hit " New Reply" and all the previous chatter will not show up in your reply.
If there is something you want to reference from an earlier comment, you can still hit " Reply", as usual, and still delete all the replies other than the one you are referencing.
Some of these replies are beginning to be as long as "War & Peace".

It just doesn't make any sense to have a team named "TRIBE" [Here comes the Tribe"!!!] and then to have a stuffed animal griffin as its mascot doing cartwheels as the Tribe comes on to the field..
Alabama, Auburn, Stanford, to name three schools who have significant athletic departments, all have mascots that are unrelated to the their nickname. Alabama in particular is a good example because their nickname is also vague.
I pointed out the logo as an example of how much worse it could be. I don't think anyone's arguing that different versions of the Griffin should not be developed, just that the ones already out there are pretty well done. More versions would help to establish the Griffin as a recognizable mascot. I think the Griffin head looks a lot like representations of the Louisville Cardinal mascot. If we compare favorably with a school like that, I think we've done well.

As a raised Kentucky fan, I'd really love to avoid any association with Louisville :)

I agree with the Alabama comparison. The general athletics logo that incorporates the mascot is very dissimilar to the mascot itself. We are also only given one version, which is like their kiddie version. There are kiddie depictions in which the AL mascot looks like Dumbo, but that isnt what is on most Alabama Tshirts that I have seen. However, Tribe-Griffin Tshirts ARE ONLY kiddie versions. This is what many of us hope for...

Exactly--the mascot and the nickname can be separate concepts. The experiences of the schools you name, along with UNC, Va Tech, Georgetown, Navy, Miami (FL), etc. etc. etc. suggest that the cognative dissonance of seeing a Griffin above the word "Tribe" will wear off with time.
I was an undergrad when they picked the Griffin. As a note of faint praise, it could be worse. We came very close to having a pug.
