Look for new comers to again be the difference for ASU this year.
As far as A-Sate goes, it has been their ability to add real 'impact player' to their returning talent as much as anything, that has allowed them to win or share the last 3 titles.

This year is different only in the fact there are a lot more 'star' players joining the returnees (I'm counting redshirts and transfers), and from practice thus far most are making their presence known and should make a huge difference for an ASU team already noted for having a large number of 'star' players.

Junior transfer Kyle Harris (the player that had starts in the SEC), looks like a sure bet to make the 2-deep at tackle and has been getting some reps with the 1st team.

Daniel Keith (who turned down the likes of Miami, Louisville and a host of others) is making a strong push to be the backup the other tackle position, and like Harris has been getting reps with the #1's. The guys ahead of them while young are also 'star', quality players, so that bodes well for ASU at that position.

Tyler Trison (the JR transfer who made some JC All American teams, and who started out at Oregon State), has been dinged up a little but has performed very well at receiver, and should be a quality addition to the 2-deep.

True freshman, and 3-star recruit Blake Mack (6-2, 200, Fr), who was one of the big gets last year, has drawn the praise of everyone and could land a starting job.

A trio of 3-star redshirts, Dijon Paschal(6-1, 200), Carl Lee Jr (6-2, 200) and Brandon Cox (5-8, 167) are showing why they got 3 stars at receiver, and all look like they will contribute. That they are not expected to start , shows just how much talent ASU has at this position.

TJ Turner (6-1, 210, So), the transfer from Arkansas, and former all SEC freshman team player, has been practicing with the 1st team, and looks like he will be as good as advertised ,if he has completed his class work.

Highly recruited 3-Star db Blaze Taylor (5-9, 170), (Troopers son ,who turned down the likes of Nebraska, Auburn, Tennessee and others) , is listed as the #2 CB.

Like the receiver position A-State is bringing in a host of 3-Star players in the secondary. Nehemia Wagner(6'1, 175, Fr), Charles Grant (5-10, 190), Kaleb Caston (6-1, 190), and Kahri Layne (5-10, 185) are doing very well as is redshirt freshman 3-star Jeremy Fulcher (6, 177). May be another week before their roles in ASU's already deep and talented defensive backfield (maybe the best in G5) are established, but the coaches are high on all these players.

Redshirt freshman QB Cameron Birse(6-2, 215 FR-R), who turned down PAC 10 schools to sign with A-State, has been getting some reps at the #2 spot, but is more likely going to be #3 this year, if he holds off 3-star freshman recruit James Tabary (6-2, 195), who has looked very good .

3-star DL recruit Chuck Ota (6'1, 285, Fr) is in the mix to make the 2-deep, and will play as a true.

If eligible 3-star punter Austin McGehee (6, 200, Fr,), who signed with Purdue but changed his mind, should be the starter.

In addition to these 'star' players several other newbie's are expected contribute this year:

Ja’Von Jones (6-2, 240, FR-R) , Jonah Hill (6-2, 245, Fr-R) Jabari Mathieu (6-2, 240, JR-R) , and Carderious Dean (6‐2, 235, Jr-Tr.)all should play a lot at DE, and are very athletic. Coaches have been very high on Jones.

New comers Charles Alexander (6-4,300, Jr, Tr),Marcus Hudson (6-4, 265, Fr) , Clifford Thomas(6-3, 280, Fr-RS) and Eugene Sutton (6-3, 275, Fr), all are in line for PT on the DL.

Highly recruited true freshman OL Christian Beard (6-4, 270, Fr) has moved inside on the OL, and has a chance to contribute as a true.

Late addition,JC transfer Jonathan Hamalton ( 6, 290, Jr), appears set to be the #2 center.

True freshmen Terrance Hollingsworth (5-9, 190, Fr),Brandon Byner, (5-11, 175), and Daryl Rollins-Davis,( 5-9, 175), all have shots a earning PT this year, at RB (Davis may end up at receiver).

Jamaris Hart (5-9, 170, Fr-R) should see PT in the secondary, and on special teams.

In addition there are a couple of other transfers from P5 programs that are trying to join the team for this year.

When your game plan is to play so fast the other team 'pukes' (which is their game plan according to their HC), depth is critical, and especially when so many backups are the 'star' players so coveted by the G5's. A-State again appears to at the head of the SBC class when it comes to overall talent, and again this year quality depth could be the difference for them.

RE: Look for new comers to again be the difference for ASU this year.
ASU fans feel they lost a starting LB over the summer, who got some preseason all-conference love in the magazines, because he was beaten out late last year, and in the spring by a true freshman. It appears now that, that player is being beaten out by a transfer.

Also based on practice reports a returning all-conference, and preseason all-conference player now finds himself on the 2nd team, and another has been back and forth.

Looks like even the returning 'stars', at ASU are having to up their game.

One was not exactly a newbie because he played a lot as a true last year.

It was AJ, and Money, a guy that supposedly was leaving because he had lost his passion apparently found it, and is beating out a three year starter and returning all-conference player. People watching practice had been predicting it.

According to AstateNation Anderson let every know after practice today there may be more. Not that the returners are doing bad, they are not, just some others, especially the newbies are doing even be better.

Even Rocky has found himself on the 2nd team, and it was not for motivation. Observers say Tyron was flat-out out playing him.

They say that Blake Mack, has been a monster at receiver, and seem to think he will start as a true at a position loaded with 3-star players.

There have been lots of newbies getting reps on the 1st team the last few practice's, so the 1st 2-deep might surprise most folks.

I wish some posters here would gives us an update everyone on how camps are going at the SBC school in their area.

Of course I'm interested in the impact of the new player's, because for the last three years they have been the reason for ASU has had their success, and it looks like that trend will continue for them. This is probably the biggest influx of real 'impact players' they have experienced.

Wonder if that is the case at other SBC teams.

Troy QB battle: there's a clear top two. Dual Threat NJCAA 1st Team All-American QB Dontreal Pruitt who's team set the all time NJCAA record for total offense; and ESPNs #27 ranked QB from 2012 in Brandon Silvers. Heard great things about both.

Early indications is that they are who we thought they were. Pruitt is getting the overwhelming majority of attention by fans who've praised him as "special" and a "freak of nature". Fans say he's Jerrel Jernigan with a much better arm. Extremely elusive and fast. He had 51 TDs, 7 INTs and only 1 Sack all year at EMCC. 6 TDs were rushing. All the USA fans claiming Troy is in for a disappointing year can just hang that up now.

Troy will have its first scrimmage tomorrow and I will be in attendance. I'll give you all my thoughts on the scrimmage tomorrow afternoon.

Well Dude,,,,,thanks!

You can add Frankie Jackson, and Tres Houston ( they rotated so much last year I did not know he was a starter but Anderson said he was) to the list of returning starters who is now on the 2nd team. Frankie is now behind another vet, but a newbie is ahead of Tres.

Looks like the first ones to feel the effects of the 'unprecedented' number of 'star' players joining ASU this year are the returning 'stars' at ASU. They were the reason most picked ASU 2nd, and should provide quality depth, the key to ASU's recent success.

Also the Copeland kid is practicing (observers say he is an exceptional athlete), and Wright is expected soon. Both have the talent to create more disruption.

I'm fine if Rocky loses his spot on defense as long as he get moved back to offense where he shined under Malzahn.

Know Troy this year, like several SBC teams, has outstanding talent on the 1st team, but depth has been the Achilles heel of most of the contenders in recent season.

Think your HC has said he will probably get snaps on that side again this year.

One other depth note, Anderson said Chris Odem, the DE who played so well as a true last year, and everyone penciled in as a starter, is not a starter yet.

Apparently a trio of newbies (Ja'Von Jones, Jonah Hill, and Jabari Mathieu ) have designs on the top spot, and are showing they have the talent to get it. Think Stone is doing well.

Because the 'new' coaches over the last few years have been able to use their previous success and contacts slip in a lot of new talent, ASU has been hard to figure, but this year is even more baffling. What is obvious is they are very talented, even if they keep getting younger, because the younger talent bumps the older talent aside..

Multiple after practice interviews here:

I would assume more will be added as the days go by.

Thanks good interviews, and I can match the names being discussed to the roster.

You guys should have got a cart to help the trainer get #55 to where they were going on the 2nd video. Hurt watching him limp off, and I was not paying attention to coach.

No idea why they didn't. He twisted his ankle so not a bad injury but no need to make it worse by having him walk on it. We need Odiari. He was a monster last year and a huge surprise to the coaching staff. Walk-on transfer from a D2.

It would be cool to see him run a few plays on offense, but Rocky needs to stay at corner- where he can be a real difference maker.

He never was that great at caching the ball, so it was one dimensional when Malzahn used him.

Besides, we have a lot more speed on offense now - saw where someone said Rocky probably is borderline top 5 fastest guy on team. DRD could do what he did for Malzahn. Byner also looks very shifty.

Know I'm focusing on how the 'stars' are doing, but ASU has a walk on RS Freshman OL no less, that looks like he has a chance to make their 2-deep on the DL, and a another (who was Mr. Football finalist in Tennessee) who has a chance to do the same at RB, and they are good.
