RE: 2014 PRACTICE NOTES...
Anyone who has been to practices.... fill me in.

My biggest worry is DL and QB.

Last year we had Lynch (75%) of Offense and when he was stopped we lost! He had the ability to Throw or Run and was a true Dual Threat. This year if we rely only on our RB game. A lot of pressure goes on the OL and we cannot have any injuries. If we have everything going to a run game. Teams can Stack the DL and have some blitzing schemes. This will be a headache.

We need a QB that can be a Dual Threat, where it will keep the defenses guessing. If we do not have one and its just relying on Run. We will have some issues.

DL is my other worry. Lost a full DL. I read our LB is good to go stated by Coach Kane. Secondary I am happy with Durante. I just worry about DL.

What are your thoughts on DL? Are they ready?

• Two true freshman who have been getting some good reps on offense are Christian Blake and Ezra Saffold, two South Florida products.

"Between Jamaal Bass coming back from his injury, and Bobby Jones has grown up a lot for his redshirt year. [Michael Santacaterina]'s back, Boomer, Sean Folliard, a lot of those guys are coming strong," NIU linebackers coach Kevin Kane said. "I feel pretty good about where we're at. I've got a solid eight linebackers I can trust right now."

The speed we can run at folks on the outside on offense is gonna be something. Tommy/Turner/Beebe/Saffold, a lot of little dudes but they can all go. I'll be pretty surprised if Blake redshirts because they need size on the outside.

Bobby Jones is gonna be a player. I wouldn't be surprised if you saw him in passing situations this year, because guys like Boomer, Payton, and Rock are more thumpers than athletes.

I just tweeted Steve Nitz after this post and I saw Carey posting pictures. I asked about defenders, looks like Olootu has been defending. Blake so maybe he is getting 1 reps.

I feel pretty confident on your Blake assessment, like I said a few days ago. Also, is he wearing dress socks at practice? Haha c'mon man.

Eh, those looked like one on ones to me. Wouldn't read a lot into who is repping where at this point, either. I remember going to early practice and seeing Charlie Miller getting a ton of reps with the 1s only to end up redshirting. They're not gonna really learn anything until they put pads on.

EDIT: Oh, they had pads on today. Not full pads, but they were in shells.

As true as this statement is, I do believe that is more on the coaching than the players. Lynch was such a big part of the offense they never wanted to take the ball out of his hands. There were times when I thought Cam would be pounding the rock and he was on the sideline. There is enough speed on the outside to counter teams stacking the box.

Quote:Just before the break during the first team session, quarterback Drew Hare (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) connected with Da'Ron Brown (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) for a 70-yard touchdown play. Brown is just one of a list of playmakers coming back on the offensive side of the ball.

Why do you think it'll be Drew, Josh? What have you heard??? I'd prefer Drew or Maddie, if he's still in it, but of course the coaches will pick the kid who is playing the best.

Perez fird is really a rush linebacker. he is small by DE standards. on third down we might look like a 3/4 because we want oash rushers out there

I would refrain from posting pictures of anything showing formations and alignments. While I don't think much can be learned from what you put up there, coaches are notoriously prickly about that sort of thing.

We have a nice thing with practices open to the public. Let's not do anything to screw it up.

We've run an odd front occasionally under Niemann before. Nothing new there.

If they don't see the plays run from the formation does it really matter? And didn't Carey post these pics???

NIU wide receivers coach Thad Ward said that sophomore Chad Beebe had the best spring of any wideout.

"Right now he's started off balling. He's having a good camp right now, really good camp," Ward said. "Very productive, great attitude. Every day he knows how to train, takes care of his body. I love having him on our team, he's going to be a really good player for us."

Players who have gotten reps include Shawun Lurry (who picked off Anthony Maddie for a TD at the conclusion of Wednesday's practice), Mayomi Olootu, Deion Hallmon and Tifonte Hunt at corner, and Jawaun Johnson and Darion Henderson at safety.

Redshirt freshman Jordan Huff, who took a screen pass 50-plus yards for a touchdown Wednesday.

A lot of good info by Nitz today. Click the link.
