OT, but mentioned in the article...

He's got a point. At 162 regular season games spanning end of March through September, they could slim it down by a few weeks or so and I probably wouldn't notice.
It's why football games are such big, important events in sports. Each college game determines 8.3% of your season (NFL 6.3%). Conference game? 13% rides on one game. In baseball, each game is worth 0.6% of your season.

I like that baseball has 162 games. I would be in favor of shortening one week or two to accommodate the extra playoffs that have been added, however. but I like that if I miss tonight, I still have the option to go tomorrow. I also think the "unimportance" of each individual game carries its own appeal. Being relaxed and comfortable in shorts with a cold beer and a scorecard is every bit as fun as standing the entire time and yelling because every play is so critical. When the season gets late the games gradually increase in importance until you are riding every pitch. These are all good things. It's almost like baseball and football are two totally different sports. Besides, it's not like it's hard to find football news. Turn on espn and they are fellating the NFL 24/7. Nothing in baseball is as annoying as preseason football the first week in august, where people pretend to be excited and act like meatheads for something that is 98% meaningless.

So long as its taken from the cross-league games and doesn't come out of divisional play.

Kind if like they are ... I can't work out the sense of "these two sports are different, make them more the same". Everything being too similar would take out a lot of the interest.

Yes, I can see that from the point of view of a medium interest fan. But what you're missing here is that baseball plays 162 games because that's the revenue stream. 162 games for media coverage, 81 home games; 'butts in seats' are what pays the bills and the player salaries.
That's why the NFL keeps considering going to 18 games, even though there's a lot of negatives - bad weather, player injuries, dilution of the meaning of each game. The upside is 12% more revenue.
And there's the crazy fans that can't get enough. With college basketball, I'm someone what wants to see 40 regular season games. There's 5% of the fanbase in baseball that wants 200 games; many NFL fans would pay to see 20 games.
You might see an MLB game with 25,000 fans in a stadium that's built for 45,000 and think that means there's too many games. The owner is looking at 25,000 x $20 tickets, plus TV money, plus....
