They're a regional masters level institution. Not going to make it on many ranking lists (except rankings for those specific kinds of institutions) unless you are a national level, tier 1, research university with many doctorate programs.

Over the strong objections of its students and alumni, JMU turned down a bid to be aligned with the top 1000 Global Universities, citing the poor academic profile of the schools in that group.
They've decided to wait on joining any other lists until some indeterminate time in the future.

In fairness, the Sun Belt has five members on the list, two of which are football only and dramatic geographical outliers who may or may not be around for a long time.
CUSA, the conference commonly believed to be their preferred destination, has eleven members on the list.
JMU may not have made the list themselves, but that doesn't mean they can't desire a conference with a higher academic profile in hopes of further raising their own.
I'd also point out that just because they weren't on the list, that doesn't mean they don't have a higher academic profile than the other eight SBC that didn't make the list, I'm not saying they do or don't, simpy pointing out that not everyone left off the list is equal and I'm sure JMU looks down their nose as APR exemptions and non-qualifiers.
Now I'll agree it was foolish to not take the invite, but not because 5 of 13 schools were ranked higher than them academically on this list.

I would be interesting to see the parameters they used to compile that list. there are some curious names on there such as m d anderson cancer center which you wouldnt normally think of as a university and schools like IUPUI and utsa ranked in the first third..and where is Rush or Brock university and what courses do they offer at the u of Limerick.

I know...I just couldn't resist.
I don't get JMU's issue with the Belt regarding academics. It doesn't seem to bother UMass-Amherst.

People worry too much about rankings like this.
