Since he's a student-coach, its probably the opposite, with the University charging him $20,000/semester (or whatever the going rate is) for the privilege!

Wouldn't the Astros be on the hook for his remaining schooling?

Depends on what his contract said.

Actually most contracts have a date that the funds for schooling terminate. Just like revenue from hats, MLB distributes the unused portion of expired scholarships each year back to the clubs.

I wonder if Lance still plans on majoring in "eligibility"?

Seriously, I wish him the best in his studies and coaching endeavors.

I wish him luck in his academic pursuit. It's tough to get back into the swing of being a student after that much time. I sure couldn't do it.

Welcome back, Puma. I hope they give you the same room at Will Rice and a spot on the college softball team. Will Rice, Will Homer!

RE: Berkman is Back
Kick me if I've told this story before, but, years ago, I worked together on some client legal matters with Larry Berkman, Lance's dad. Was up in Austin doing some of that work and Larry and John Hays, and we all went over to Disch-Falk to see us play Texas for the last time as a fellow SWC member; Lance was a high school senior and had just announced for Rice. (His first choice actually was UT, but Gus declined to offer.) I remember walking away from the stadium after the game and Larry's saying, ponderingly, "Well, the boy may never play an inning of college baseball....but at least he'll be getting one hell of a good college education."

If I had started this thread, I would have entitled it "Berkman's back and Graham's got him!". Unfortunately, most people aren't 40s movies fans enough to get it :(

Have Heard Berkman wants to get into coaching and might be interested in the Longhorn job if Garrido leaves.

I think your timing is off. Lance Berkman was at Rice for the final two years of the SWC. Maybe it was post-announcement of the impending split but before all the details were known?

No, I've not heard the story, but the invitation was too compelling...

Timing may very well be off. I seem to be getting worse and worse on that score as growing older. But the quote is correct, verbatim.

I remember your telling the story before. And I think John has told me the same story. Great story, and deserves repeating.

I also remember someone, maybe you, telling the story before but, hey, it is a good story and deserves repeating.

Wasn't Lance here on 1996 (last year of SWC) and '97, when he won POY and led us to our first trip to Omaha during our first year in the WAC?

RE: Berkman is Back
Lance's freshman year was 1995. The last year of SWC baseball was 1996, so he had 2 years in the SWC.

1994 was the last year UT hosted the conference tournament. Maybe that was the context of the conversation.
