RE: CAA men’s Tourney
Nice that Hampton got a tourney win but the wheels came off vs Delaware last night.

Nice line-up of games today, the quarters one of the best days of the tourney. Todays match-ups:
Charleston vs Monmouth
Towson vs UNCW
Drexel vs Stony Brook
Hofstra vs Delaware

I think Monmouth and Stony Brook could both surprise in this round.

Not sure if anyone caught during the Stony Brook/Northeastern game that SBU did not have their band or cheerleaders at the game until halftime. Apparently the bus trip, scheduled for 4 hours, took 8 hours on their trip down yesterday. Always a crap shoot in NY if you have to cross the Hudson. There’s no easy or convenient way to do it.

Well said. Dane is a high character individual who has served W&M to the best of his ability.

Unfortunately it has not worked out the way that neither he nor the College hoped. A fresh start for both parties should be beneficial to all involved.

RE: CAA men’s Tourney
Semis set which will be nationally aired on CBSNN tonight.

Biggest surprise yesterday in quarters was Stony Brook which upset Drexel in double overtime. Drexel never the same after Jones was hurt. I think the Dragons lost a step trying to reinsert him late in the line-up, he just didn’t have it. The announcers mentioned it tied the W&M/Hofstra game for most overtimed (but didn’t bring the same drama imo). I remember another 2OT tourney game, UR and American (great game) but maybe that was still under ECAC South.

Tonight’s games:
Charleston vs Towson
Stony Brook vs Hofstra

Most interesting will be seeing how the Cougars can handle the crash the boards approach of the Tigers, especially Charles Thompson. Towson did win at Charleston during regular season.

Hofstra and SBU brings a neighborhood battle into the semis which should make it interesting.

Always difficult in tournament to turnaround and play the day following a double OT hard fought game. I like Hofstra to cruise in that game, although SB did play them close in their two matchups this year, and you never know in tourney play if a team goes flat.

Towson - Charleston is the more interesting matchup. Charleston is the better team, but Towson could potentially make it difficult for them.

It's looking like a Charleston Hofstra final in my eyes.

RE: CAA men’s Tourney
I think Charleston is the best team of the 4. But, in tournament basketball, it only takes one bad half, or even one bad 4-5 minute stretch to be in trouble.

From a Tribe perspective, it will be nice when we have actual hope to win tournament games again. The energy in the building and within the fanbase was very high in that period where we advanced to the semis 5 straight years. And in every case, the Tribe was extremely competitive losing to the conference champion every year but one. Hopefully, the program can get back to being competitive and interesting.

One thing is for certain though, March 10, 2029 shapes up to be a stressful day for Tribe fans. March 10, 2014, 2019 and 2024 all had rough outcomes.

None of the 4 remaining teams are anywhere close to the talent that existed in the conference in those years though. The Charleston 2018 or UNCW 2017 team would cruise past any of these squads. Same for many of that era Hofstra teams.

Tbh, in this portal era, I think a lot of the one bid leagues like the CAA are going to get worse. Top players are much more likely to transfer out, and while there will be talent to be found from P5 castoffs, the teams won't have the same ability to gel when there's a rotating cast of characters every season.

RE: CAA men’s Tourney
Agreed. It will take a really unique situation to be able to keep a player for 3 years or more who is talented. Some of that was occurring earlier, but now it is a constant, even for the Power 5 schools. It appears to be a year to year thing for everyone now. In many cases, the teams bear no resemblance at all to the ones that take the court in November. So, coaching and improvement will play a big factor.

The downside for coaches at our level is that the recruiting likely never even slows down. Recruiting high school, the portal, grad transfers, and everything wrapped in an NIL package. Plus, responsibility even if the players have no interest in being an actual student. Definitely challenging times.

Just to clarify: you mean Williams for the Dragons, not Jones. Also, when the ECAC South expanded to 8 teams and renamed itself the CAA, it was American and UNCW who were added. So the UR/American game you remember would have been an early CAA matchup before American left.

RE: CAA men’s Tourney
It was painful watching the Charleston/Towson game - both teams were so gassed toward the end given the defenses. Kudos to Charleston for pulling it out, took some guts. Towson looked like a sure winner late. Skerry missed another attempt to get into the Championship game, they’ve never been.

Stony Brook is dangerous given all the graduates, a seasoned group. I expect they will compete well early but being their 4th straight game, not sure their legs will hold out. Nice run for them, knocking off the gauntlet of Northeastern, Drexel, Hofstra to get here. Hofstra just didn’t show the will to win last night, at times looked like they were dragging.

Looking forward to a solid game tonight. If Charleston pulls it out, they will be the first team since UNCW to win back-to-back titles.

SB down two with 3 minutes left. We would be getting run out of this gym against either team.

Stony Brook had their chance. They had the ball with twelve seconds left in regulation, in a tie game, and couldn’t even get off a final shot.

I didn’t know that Donnie Wahlberg had given up acting and taken up coaching……

RE: CAA men’s Tourney
Total gate, all sessions, for the CAA tourney this year was 12,876. That’s about on par with previous years.

I think DC is a good location and the arena is new and decent. All the members do a nice job sending in bands and spirit squads. A good W&M team would certainly help - the only time I’ve ever seen the upper deck full was when Tribe fans packed it the first year there when we were a 2 seed and lost the first game to Elon. Crowd overall about 3,000 and that’s been the largest session crowd the tourney has had so far. Beyond that, Charleston, Drexel, UNCW and Towson bring in a decent number of fans. The rest, not so much. The support for Stony Brook last night I thought was very disappointing.

No word that I know for next year. I did hear Joe mention on CBSSN that he liked the central location of DC so may mean we are heading back. I had also heard a comment about returning to Baltimore. I would like to see the timing shift to a Monday night championship leaving Sat and Sunday open for the quarters and semis.

RE: CAA men’s Tourney
My understanding (I'd have to find it again, it was on Twitter) is that we are in DC through 2027.

Personally I think the arena is great and just right for the current CAA. This year I finally stayed in a hotel that was right off the green line and it was super convenient. We took Amtrak up with two kids (5 and 7). The 4 of us took the Metro everywhere, had lots of options, and had no need for car/uber/taxi.

I do wish there was more right next to the arena, but I don't think there are a lot of options that would provide that.
