Here is an idea....CUSA vs SBC Championship
1. Both conferences start play on the last Saturday in August.
2. Twelve Game seasons
3. Conference Championship Games on 1st Saturday in December.
4. CUSA Champion vs SBC Champion on 3rd Saturday in December.
Game rotates between Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, New Orleans,
Miami, and San Antonio
*** Big South bragging rights
Then when the playoffs expand
5. Champion qualifies for College Football Playoff. (8 teams)
The AAC and MAC could follow the same format. That still would leave out the MWC.
So the answer is the highest rated G5 champ gets an automatic berth in he CFP. The other four conferences get seeded to for the two other spots in the playoff.
1st round - January 1st.
2nd round - second Saturday in January
CFP Chamopionship - 3rd Saturday in January
Example:
Playoff Berths
1. SEC Champion
2. ACC Champion
3. Big TEN Champion
4. PAC 12 Champion
5. Big 12 Champion
6. Highest rater G5 Champion (MWC Champion)
7. CUSA vs SBC Champion
8. AAC vs. MAC Champion
Basically, when your conference division. Then win.... or go home.

I've had the same idea in the past - but you have it a little off. The AAC would get an auto-bid, the MWC champ would play the MAC champ. Essentially, you have a 10-team playoff, with the top six getting a first-round bye.

that would never work. The SEC would never allow the chance of only 1 SEC team being involved in the post season.

A one loss, top 5-ranked, 2nd place in their conference SEC, Big XII, BIG, or Pac 12 team isn't going to put up with a 7-4 MAC (or SBC, CUSA, MWC) champion making the playoffs and not them.

The MWC doesn't need a game. If they really need a game they can play Big Sky. Although the MWC schools would throw a fit, they are good at that.

Could only see this working as a bowl game,
but that's not going to happen.

have you seen any of the threads concerning your football team? Most of those are probably as big of a joke as this.

Then I would have to fall back to Panthersville's model.

Aren't they part of the Birmingham Parks & Rec program.

P5 conferences have begun the separation process. In a few years there will be P5 & G5 playoffs. It is inevitable. Might as well accept it.

RE: Here is an idea....CUSA vs SBC Championship
I don't even care about the playoff. Even if a G5 school gets in, they're going to win 1 game max. This isn't basketball. There isn't a three point line to make the gap in talent less important.
No G5 school is going to go on 3 or 4 game winning streak pulling upsets the whole way.
The CFP matters to me none because it doesn't make it any more likely that a G5 school gets a chance at the championship. In fact, it probably makes it far less likely.

There would be a massive breach of contract for that to happen considering were tied into the current structure through 2025.

I'm sure somewhere deep in the bowels of the contract there is some method of compensation for breaking the deal. There aren't many issues money can't solve.

It's a simple concept: win on the field - win your division, win your conference.
It's actually a 20-team playoff, with the first round being the conference championships. Having a playoff system that only utilizes conference champions is perfectly reasonable, and a large number of college football fans prefer that over a system that uses arbitrary rankings or a "selection committee".
However, if you insist on a "wild card" option, then it is an easy fix:
10 conference champions, 1 "wildcard" selected by committee, top 5 ranked conference champions get first-round bye (wildcard does not get first-round bye). This would actually make the first round more interesting for TV as you would always have at least one P5 in it.

The AAC no longer deserves and auto bid and probably didnt deserve most of its BCS auto bids. After the bowl games the Belt was actually rated higher than them OOC.
