Can only hope to expand to 16 and add all conference champs.

when the p5/ncaa finds a way to make more money out of a 16 game system, it will happen.

I don't see how a 16-team college playoff couldn't make money comparable with what March madness makes. A 20-team with 10 automatic bids and 10 at-large bids could probably make a good bit more.

I think it's inevitable that the playoffs will grow. Basically the B1G will probably be the only P5 league that would resist it, but they won't be able to stop it by themselves.

The big boys want most of the money.

The others want access.

Design a system that meets both needs. Hint: Copy the basketball tourney format.

I do this almost every year. It's the Mother of all Playoffs format.

Believe 16 team playoff will happen eventually.
That seems to be the best number per the FCS playoffs.
Too much money to be made not to do it.
G5 champs would almost have to be included.

But could you have a 16-team format with 10 at-large bids?

Didn't the FCS have to add an at-large bid for every autobid they added?

Oh they wouldn't have to be included. at all. Most likely scenario is expansion to 8 because its only 3 games and it means more P5 schools in the playoffs.

The only problem is that there is virtually no money associated with the FCs playoffs whereas the FBS playoffs will generate BILLIONS.

The P5 schools will never share more of that money than they have to share. They will never go with a straight 16 playoff with all conference champs involved. That is giving too much of the pie to the G5. Solution is to give them more seats at the table, and a bigger share of that pie. Hence, the Mother format.

RE: SI: How could a mid-major qualify for the College Football Playoff?
I am really good at reading between the lines......First 3 teams could be 0 to one loss and the fourth spot captured by a Mid Major (G5) would qualify by first going 12 or 13 and 0 and having at least one major victory over say a top 6 team from the SEC (or a win against a number 3 or higher for another conference) then no other team from a power conference would have less than 2 losses and those would have to include a big fat egg loss of embarrassing proportions or to a team that was 6-6 at best..................Then here is where it gets tricky.....all the other half way attractive teams with 2 losses and a big fat egg loss would have to have a communicable disease that would require quarantine for at least 2 weeks around the playoff. Then a G 5er would qualify......

So as example Troy goes 12 and 0 with victory of Georgia and beats a 1 loss or undefeated UL in the last game of the year.....all other potentials meaning OSU gets slobber knocked by 2-3 loss other division champ and so and so.......If any of you remember Angels in the Outfield" where the little boy says..."it could happen" well the plague could hit Tuscaloosa a week prior to the playoffs too.03-shhhh

Maybe the highest rated one if they expand to eight. As of today the best scenario would be a G5 would to win their conference in a dominate fashion and schedule atleast two top ten type programs and beat them as well. The other two OOC games would have to be respectable with no FCS for the talking heads to harp on. I doubt there is going to be four undefeated P5's all in one year so not to worried about that. Really unlikely, but Boise was one kick away from likely being in the BCS championship game so with two more slots the likelyhood did not decrease.

I dont think it would be automatic at 16 but 8 yes. If you are solidly in the top 15 you would likely make it in 16, but having more than one does not happen a whole lot. Anything below a consensus top 15 would give the comittee room just to throw SOS out there. The good news it is possible just got to win your games. Outside of a handfull of programs in all of football one loss is going to eliminate you P5 or not. The one loss PAC 12, big 10, ACC, big 12 second place team will be automatically just about every year as well at four. It will go to 8 in no time. Just need the perfect storm of all P5 champs to go undefeated.

In 2008, 2009, 2011 you could have had three G5's in a 16 team playoff and two in 2010.
