App State : Future Projects
May seem like baby steps compared to some of your ongoing improvements, but remember we just spent something like $64 million for improvements, so we have had to pay that off, or go a long way toward it.

"Appalachian State Athletics Director Charlie Cobb on Thursday shared a 2014-15 budget with the ASU board of trustees, noting that his department will spend about $2 million more than this year as ASU moves to the FBS-level Sun Belt Conference."

"Future projects include an estimated $15.6 million expansion to Kidd Brewer Stadium, including north end zone and east side seating additions; $2.2 million for a field hockey facility; $1 million indoor tennis facility; $4.3 million for basketball and volleyball facility improvements, including a new practice facility; $5 million to relocate the track; $1 million to replace the stadium turf; $750,000 for baseball field additions; and $500,000 for a golf driving range and practice area.

In addition, a "Championship Endowment" of $5 million would provide funding for performance-based incentives for coaches."

The additions for football will seating only as our press box, locker room, etc is one of the best around. Hope they have a multi-phase plan to end the piece meal look.

Agree completely Saint. Was almost an after thought last time when they were doing the upgrade to add more seating. In fact additional seating wasn't even decided as I recall until they had gotten into the project. Major long term planning should be in place long before execution. Erector set method works but doesn't look professional by any means.

I hope you guys refine the expansion plan that I've seen. Track aside, you have a beautiful stadium and id hate to see it ruined with the rendering that was floating around before.

What will capacity be at Kidd Brewer when the expansion is complete?

Really depends upon the exact final details. Had this speculation before though and most came up with 38,000 to 43,000. Would think toward the lower end myself. Was completely guesses.

I couldn't agree more. Extremely disappointed the athletic department chose to do a cheesy photo-shopped picture instead of having a professionally rendition done.

KBS is in one of the most beautiful settings in America and it's a shame the university has piece milled the facility together over the years. The west stands don't even remotely resemble the east side, the original part of Owens Field House doesn't match the annex, and those ramps at each end of the east stands are an eyesore. There was an original plan back when the upper section was added to the west stands in 1979, but I guess those plans flew out the window somewhere along the line.

A lot of ideas circulating about how to do an expansion. I won't be overjoyed if they take the cheap route of throwing in some endzone seats and covering the track on the sidelines with turf. Other than nothing inside the fences matching, the biggest problem with KBS is the stands are so far away from the field. Lowering the filed is probably the best option, although not the most cost feasible option. With that idea out of the way I'd like to see us start by moving the field closer to the west (pressbox) stands. On the east side I'd widen the walkway on the east stands upper deck and come off it at the same angle as the top level until you reach a point about 10 feet above field level (which should be about 3/4's way out on the track). The lower section of the east stands are crumbling and should be eliminated. Instead of digging 'em up I'd build up the sides so they are level and concrete over it. Running walkways out to openings in the seating area. Stands could be added (wrapped around) both end zones at the same angle as the lower section of the east side. No it wouldn't be completely symmetrical with the west stands, but it would be a lot better than what we have. App already has a dynamite game day atmosphere at The Rock. It would be unbelievable if the fans - esp the students - were about 20 feet closer to the action on all four sides. That configuration would make Montana's stadium sound like a library.

Yes, it's late and I can't sleep. Yes, I've thought about this a long time. I've been in construction all my life and am kind of a frustrated architect / designer. I personally thought we should have dropped the west stands before we started enhancements in 2005. I sat in that wretched upper section for 29 years (moved to the new east deck when it opened). The aisles are narrow, there is no room between rows, and it is like climbing Mt Everest to get to your seats. Of course any decent plan would have necessitated relocating the track. A lot of folks were screaming for it, but at the time nobody in the athetic administration thought it was an issue. Now it is. Go figure.
