I'm sure he is an excellent choice, however the last Dean of Engineering to become President didn't work out too well.

Most importantly, will he support athletics?

Actually Kapoor and Jacobs had a lot more in common with respect to shaking things up than most people realize; however, Jacobs had two major advantages over Kapoor: 1) Kapoor's style wasn't as refined or as smooth as Jacobs and, more importantly 2) as former head of the "Block Memorial College of Medicine", Jacobs was golden in the eyes of the Blade and he almost always had their support and they usually had his back if needed as well whereas the Blade hated Kapoor and did ever thing in their power to bring him (and the University) down.

I strongly suspect that Naganathan has both a broader and deeper understanding of the academic enterprise than either Jacobs or Kapoor and I suspect he will therefore likely have a better relationship with the faculty many of whom can admittedly be a contentious lot at times.

There are different levels of support and in terms of higher levels of support ---and I am just guessing here, but ------I suspect it will be difficult for any successor to top Jacobs' efforts.
