Who is your UNC?
Nearly every G5 university likely has their own "UNC." When I say that, I mean that university in your state that can break any rule in the rulebook but see no reprimands.

For App State, it is and always has been UNC. App and UNC are very different schools, from the ways that scandals are handled down to the personalities of our student bodies. UNC may not dislike Appalachian, but I know quite a few from Appalachian that loathe UNC and the fact that we have to be in the "their" system.

Here... I'll help you out:

stAte & UALR = Arkansas
Texas State & UTA = UT & Texas A&M
The Cajuns & ULM = LSU
Idaho - Boise State
I'd bet USA & Troy = Alabama
Georgia State & Georgia Southern = Georia (maybe even Georgia Tech)
NMSU = Maybe UNM

This is the simplest thread ever: Plug in "University of (you pick the state)" and that's the general answer. Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, and just about everyone except Wyoming has this problem. No getting away from it, it's history. Like it or not, though, UNC is considered one of the best public universities in the country, but it also casts a deep, dark shadow over the other schools...even to some extent NC State.

No, the issue as I see it is how do the other schools overcome the decades of attention, financial resources, etc., to carve their own place within the system. How do other schools do more than be mere side-shows to the main attraction in their own state? No easy answer. We're all sick of the Walmart fans of the University of Whatever, but simply hating being in the same system doesn't fix it. I don't know what will.

It's Georgia beyond a shadow of a doubt. Even Tech struggles to sell out their stadium on really good years like 2009.

Oh to be like App State and only have to compete with ECU and the triangle football-wise.

UGA is not our UNC. UNC is your UGA except not for football.

For NMSU it is definitely UNM, theres really no one else. Here's just the latest case of yet another mishandling of evidence and investigation by UNM and UNMPD:

http://www.abqjournal.com/411983/news/la...-case.html

Seems like every time an athlete is accused of a crime the evidence isn't collected, "lost", or destroyed by the power of Greyskull. Sometimes its just mind boggling.

Throw in Auburn as well. Look how easy they got off after Cam Newton.

Yeah.....that may just be a "you" problem. I hate UGA and generally distrast anyone that ever went there, but I'm not bitter that they are a bigger university with a longer history - which is what it sounds like in your case.

I don't think the OP was talking much about overshadowing.

UNC is responsible for the most egregious example of academic fraud in NCAA history for which they have not, and likely will not, face any NCAA repercussions whatsoever. Meanwhile, App State faces a basketball postseason ban for players grades in classes they obviously attended.

Obviously UGA or any other school hasn't reached the level of corruption they enjoy at the University of Non Compliance, but can you think of an example of the double standard and the "too big to fail" preferential treatment big money schools get from the NCAA?

For NMSU, UNM. When they overhauled their basketball Arena it was suppose to cost tax payers 44 million, instead it cost 60 million and the company (out of state) who got the contract hired the UNM presidents son at the time.

Last year NMSU asked for $875,000 from the state for field turf, they gave us $130,000. At the same time UNM got 1.7million for a brand new HD video board for FB and stadium lights for Baseball.

Boise State's like this. They've maxed out the amount of bonds they're allowed to take from the state for their athletic upgrades. Half a billion dollars is a lot in a small state like Idaho, especially when all three schools are cutting programs and having trouble maintaining buildings.

RE: Who is your UNC?
you have to understand that the relationship with UNC and App, and I presume other mid majors in NC, is because they have such power at the state level, they can control what happens at your University, both athletically and academically. About 6 months ago App was I think trying to set up I believe,a masters or doctorial program, had to submit to the state for approval, UNC objected, and surprise, surprise, we were denied. This isn't the first time, this has happened many times over the years, our chancellor Peacock, has shown frustration at not being able to improve the University because of the roadblocks thrown at him at the state level, without really giving us clarification on why we were denied. The frustration for us is we are just trying to improve our school, but if UNC sees anything we do as a threat or even just competition, they have the power in just a phone call to shut us down. Bottom line is the mid majors in NC are all under the thumb of UNC, there is not denying they have a lot of control in what happens at our University and it pisses us off.

Didn't UNC have 14 players suspended for the year a few years back? It was right before their home opener with LSU. They played surprisingly well in that game.

Arkansas where the AD and the toady supporters sneer at the other schools in the state and declare their athletic department is self-supporting, yet somehow the media of the state never notices the annual supplement to the athletic budget (just over $2 million last year) that the self-supporting program receives.

This is exactly the problem we have at Southern, but the "battle" is with the State of Atlanta as much as with the UGA-dominated Board of Regents. Tech, UGA, and the Medical College in Augusta were the only major universities in the state and UGA Night School in Atlanta (became Ga State) grew largely as a graduate school for Atlanta professionals seeking higher degrees. Georgia Southern has 6% of the state's enrollment, but only 4% of the budget. The only way we were able to get our own engineering program (was under Tech) was because UGA got one on the same vote.

It will probably take another 20 years for us to EARN our status as a Research University because we have to fight, scratch, and claw for everything. It's cool though, because part of what makes school's like ours special is how we've grown from Teacher's Colleges through community support and regional demand.

Yea, still not unique to App. UTA and TXST have two controlling schools that just need to make a call. Ask UTSA the hoops they had to go through to start their football program.

We USA fans don't really have our own "UNC" but I feel VERY sorry for UAB. The University of Alabama At Tuscaloosa basically runs their (UAB's) athletic department with their collective "foot" on their throats to keep them irrelevant (and obviously, it's working).

Well, your age (or lack thereof) is peeking out a bit ... UGA is perhaps better today than some others, but that hasn't always been the case.

http://articles.latimes.com/1988-11-29/s...lliam-kemp

1985 seems like a while ago, but I'd be willing to bet a lot of what went on then at UGA was pretty darn close to some of what transpired at UNC.

I think ut-austin would certainly be similar to a unc for us at uta but we arent in the a-m system and they will come play us at our place so I dont hold any grudge against them. both schools seem to get more than their share of the money. enrollment wise uta may be more than 3/5 the size of ut-austin but I doubt we get 3/5 as many dollars from the system. as for utsa, I followed their blog when they first started talking about football. my sister is a grad from there and I grew up in SA so I was interested. the push for football and a change of conference for them was a move to align themselves with schools of more stature and shuck the small-time regional school image. I dont remember much talk of anyone holding them back..as I recall they got a yes from the regents, made a deal with the city for the alamo dome and hired a "name" coach and started recruiting players. what amazed me was their ability to schedule home and home games with the biggest names in college football before even running the first play. certainly made me jealous as we at least had a history of football and an actual stadium of our own and cant get it restarted.
