Yeah, CUSA taking NMSU all-sports (which would be taking from both the SBC and the WAC) would be more likely than CUSA taking Liberty.

Just curious, BruceF. What would C-USA find more attractive in NMSU than Liberty? Outside of men's hoops, I am scratching my head.

I'm not Bruce, but NMSU is the Land Grant University for New Mexico; has very good academics, has been at least competitive at the FBS level when affiliated with a conference, and is about an hour away from CUSA member UTEP.

RE: Benson interview 5-19-14
Thought Benson did a good Q & A. Like hearing him talking about coaches, teams and the first of the year time frame. It gives everyone time to show what they have this football season. Seems very little was ruled out so an active board on speculation.

If NMSU joins C-USA, it would be likely that UTEP is in the AAC or MWC. UTEP doesn't want to be in a conference with NMSU.

USF didn't want to be in a conference with UCF, but then it happened.

Men's hoops and that other stuff. And before dismissing NMSU's NCAA record as old news, the last decade doesn't flatter Liberty either, as NMSU has been to the NCAA five times in the past ten years and Liberty has gone twice.

In saying that I was by no means saying that CUSA is at all likely to take NMSU ... intra-conference politics aside, I expect a school with some NCAA tournament wins and/or stronger FB performance in the past ten years would have the inside track on NMSU. But Liberty's never done anything of note in Football, so that's no help to Liberty.

There were lots of rumors that it was WKU next and then NMSU, but the NMSU never happened.

UTEP fans want nothing to do with NMSU but what their admin looks at it is different. Real cheap travel and more people in the seats.

You can bet WKU will be looking for some basketball chops and encourage others to do so.

NMSU would be one of those in the mix.

May be no adds this year, but still think something will happen. Too much
passion for adding NMSU all sports not to happen.

Passion from who? This board?

Lots of us would like to see NMSU because of their basketball. But I don't know that, given the geography, that they'd ever be able to get the nine votes necessary.

After you get past the fans, the passion is slim and none.

Lot of rumor mongers this time last year were stuck on 16-school conferences for whatever reason (maybe OCD, since 16 is the next integral square of a square after 1), and asking questions like "which schools will CUSA take to get to 16" as if getting to 16 had some secret payoff.

Instead, P5 conference have settled from 10 to 14 and Go5 on 11 to 14. So the "take who for 16" question turned out to be skipping the "is there any reason to go to 16?" question.

We don't even know whether the NCAA CCG deregulation will deregulate the conference size requirement or just the play in two division round robin requirement, since if the divisional headache has actually prevented the Big12 from an expansion it would otherwise like to make, deregulating the two division round robin would be enough to eliminate the division headache.

Is that up for vote?

If Western voted NO on UMSU for all sports in the SBC why would Western then turn around and want NMSU in C-USA?

But you argument is my argument on why it made no sense for Western to vote no as reported on this board. Since NMSU is not being added as a all sports member with Western no longer in the SBC...

looks like it wasn't Western keeping them out

what would c-usa find more appealing about nmsu? it's a long list, but basically they are a state flagship school with lots more name recognition and a plus for the credibility of the conference. you would not have to explain anything when people ask "who are you playing this week?".

You are correct. Everyone knows where Las Cruces is located and the Lobos are certainly a somewhat familiar team in the Metroplex. Wait, what? OK, when you say Aggies in Arlington everyone knows exactly which team you are referencing. Hmmmmmm.

People concluding what the rule will be based on the ACC proposal could perhaps remember the "proposal" part of that phrase.

The proposal has got the inside track, and if you had to bet, that would be the best bet, but its the NCAA, and what is actually voted on has sometimes changed in surprising ways in the past. Especially if inter-divisional politics come into play, given that the original rule was a Division 2 rule.

It would be possible to invent rationales. For instance:

(1) You think that the Sunbelt won't be strong enough to land an at-large bid except for the bubble buster scenario, but that CUSA is on the edge of being a two-bid conference, so going for the extra hoops strength is worth more in the second scenario.

(2) You are going to be in the division traveling to visit them ever second year or in sports with no divisions traveling to Las Cruces frequently in one case, and you are going to be in the division traveling to visit them ever fourth year, with more team sports split into divisions, in the other case.

But the general argument would be if you cast a vote based on the circumstances, rather than on some kind of animosity, "the same add" wouldn't automatically be the same circumstance.

Indeed, those in the Sunbelt who didn't pull the trigger on NSMU all-sports at this point in time could well include schools willing to do so in other circumstances.
