The doubt removed was about UMASS and the commitment to get to 12. He still used a loser's argument on why he personally does not want a championship game.

FWIW, among the non-power leagues, when one or more teams comes into a conference championship game ranked, the higher rated team is 7-7 all-time. If you use a neutral site or alternate hosting between divisions or any other format where the highest rated team isn't at home the higher rated team will lose most of the time.

The only way you can do a title game and statistically give the highest rated team a good chance of improving their standing is to have the highest rated team host without regard to any other factor (ie. if East champ is 7-1 in league but 11-1 overall and the West champ is 8-0 in league but 9-3 overall you have to have the east champ host)

I like and want the championship game hosted on the highest ranked team's field. That's the way all of these championship games should be in my opinion. It should be a reward and revenue generator for the best team, and should guarantee a solid attendance to boot... Plus the national exposure of the game on your campus is an added bonus, and it's cheaper to do as well. If it has the stats support it, that's even better.

Assuming all G5 leagues do a title game at the home field of the highest ranked teams on average one home team loses every year and about every three or four years, two will lose. But of course reality rarely conforms to stats so more likely one year none will lose and then one year three will lose.

So the odds at the base level indicate a 75% chance of victory for the hosting team. That mitigates the risk quite a bit understanding there are all kinds of factors involved when trying to handicap a college football game.

There are things UMASS can do, say, and commit to that would make them acceptable as a temporary placeholder, and even as a permanent member.

But getting a championship game right this instant is not one of the things that should be the primary motivator for adding them. That should be a side-effect of adding them at most.

For a conference that was just complaining that they had 7 bowl eligible teams and only 2 got bowl bids, why add another team to dilute it further? Same with media coverage. SBC gets 5 espn games and just lost their CSS regional TV partner but wants to further spread those 5 TV appearances even further??

No what is crazy is the idea that the Sun Belt should take any warm body that wanders in just to get to 12. The MAC took UMass for the sole purpose of 14 not because the league wanted UMass as a football only member. Worked wonderfully

I don't think anyone was realistically expecting UMass to join all sports.

I agree, MAC should have never offered UCF, Temple, or UMass football only. The relationships were one-way where we did them favors to either get their programs started or to keep it from folding (Temple). We received no benefit. CUSA was smart to make Charlotte come all-in to start or nothing at all. MAC was stuck with UMass before the new rules of CFP payouts capped at 12 and we had to offer them full membership per the contract and were prepared to offer JMU to make 14. Fortuntely they left and now MAC is back to a revenue and media optimal 12.

Now NCAA going to waive championship game requirements. That is to keep conferences from growing. They don't want more FBS teams. Same reason for CFP $ capped at 12. Any extra adds at this point only drain resources and media exposure. CUSA finally figured this out, but Benson is obsessed with conference expansion. The same expansion that made his last conference fail.

Dont complain about over half your bowl eligible teams sitting home and seldom being on TV if you keep adding teams for no reason necessary. It doesn't even help travel expenses. There is no benefit to adding now.

Benson is an idiot. He is the only Commish that constantly says stupid stuff to the media, is a bad negotiator, is obssessed with expanding conferences despite what membership wants, and failed the WAC and led them to their demise. He's doing the same now with talking to UMass despite the most important member (Arkansas State) not wanting to expand.

He'll piss off Arkansas State, they'll leave, and the SBC will unravel just like the WAC. You'd almost think he is a Trojan Horse stooge placed by the P5 to ruin the G5 one conference at a time.

I certainly agree with Benson being an idiot, but your statement about stAte being the "most important" member of the Belt, needs some work. I love the Arkansas State boys and they know it, but your ramblimg is uneducated at best.

Benson is not shy about playing favorites. Arkansas State is clearly not one of them.

I guess last year the membership was on board with the 12 fb teams and a championship game. It does seem odd that Idaho and NMSU were invited last year as the membership voted for these outliers, especially Idaho but this year there seems to be much less support to vote for another one in UMass to get to 12.

Last year a championship game seemed to be such a big deal. This year-- not so much.

I'd consider them one of them. If stAte of ULL leave, the SBC is in trouble. One of those two leave and the other will be running for the exit right behind them. Troy too, but they have less options. Idaho, NMSU, the 2 basketball schools, ULM, and the 2 new FCS schools are not as important. Everybody else already left.

Which is why Benson is an idiot. He doesnt listen to the two mainstays of the conference.

I'll stand in your corner Tx state.. UL, state, Tx State and S. Al have serious potential. One of us leaves, kiss this ***** goodbye. G state has the potential too, might have joined the party too late, though.

Who would I be okay with leaving this conference? Anyone that is football only.

The rest of them I don't want to lose, so one jenga piece is about as important as another.

A conference commissioner should feel, and act, the same way.

Last year we had before us two of the best ever in FCS and two schools we had a relationship.

We lost WKU shortly thereafter and after 13+ months haven't agreed on a 12th member.

Has more to do with who you have to pick from than having a title game.

Benson didn't kill the WAC. The MWC killed the WAC. Without Big Sky expansion, there was only enough schools for one G5 Western Conference.

Arkansas State is not leaving. There is no where to go. They are not the most important school in the conference. That does not exist in the Sun Belt Conference. There are no dominate schools in the SBC.

It's really about conference compromise for UMass. Arkstfan said it pretty clearly in the other thread.
Nice possible compromise scenario
At the end, "they all don't have to agree but think together" was a nice quote.

Do think the championship game is a good idea if it opens the contract with ESPN. Getting addition ESPN coverage would be good for the conference and the teams. Perhaps a little more money, which could offset the cost, along with playing the game at the highest rated team's stadium.
