I actually really like the idea of a non-divisional football CCG as well for similar reasons. You pit #1 and #2 against each other instead of Division A #1 vs Division B #1 which might not be the same thing.

Guys, nobody but the MAC, the Big South, and the OVC plays in divisions in basketball anymore. No reason for them.

Oh no! SI picked up what CBS ran with no additional info or research! That's it, done deal.

Amherst. It's about an hour and half west of Boston. But it's a very very fun college town. You'll enjoy it more than Boston.

Family friend in Boston we could stay with. I also have two young kids in tow, fun college town with youngsters=bad idea.

Hahaha. Yeah, agree. Boston is cool too. And a free place to stay is always good.

It's more correct to say "same bad news for Liberty". It's the exact same story. So one story gets written that says UMass is talking with the Sunbelt and it's a done deal? So if I told you Jerry Jr. was in Monroe two weeks ago, does that mean Liberty's in? Lots of talking and negotiating right now.

Without a doubt...Liberty is trying their hardest to get in. But...going back to what EKU's president revealed about no FCS and UMASS being the only viable FBS team available...you can put 2 plus 2 together. Sorry!!!

For the time being adding UMASS and NMSU as a full member makes sense. Also which Liberty dosen't want to hear...gives EKU and Missouri State the time they need.

I'm completely realistic about Liberty's chances. I know what some of those in higher education think of Liberty. Saying that I believe if given the chance Liberty would be a great conference mate and would bring stability to the SB.

I too oppose divisions for football especially if it results in a geographical oddity of placing Louisiana in the east when there are other, more easterly schools, in the west.

So there could be the following consensus reached.

1) Lets just wait on LU. They aren't ready now. And they'll still be there if we need them later
2) If the NCAA doesn't allow us to have a CCG at 11, then we can add UMass

This appears to be a good option. As of now LU is not a good match for a FBS conference. Their "flat earth" academics and poor record on social justice issues would be a drag upon an up and coming FBS conference. This is not to say LU will not grow beyond this in the coming years as the coattails of Jerry Sr. go further into the past. For now their fundamentalist arrogance and social superiority holds them back. I would support the Belt saying nicely to LU, "Grow up a little then we will look at you more seriously at a later date."

Or the Amherst Bulletin...

I doubt Umass gets regular coverage in the Globe, especially considering all of the colleges in Boston.

Was very happy to see this on my phone mass live app at work. Glad it's out in the open. It's being covered by Springfield, Northampton and school news papers. There is a pretty big hockey game tonight. Generally speaking the Herald is more pro UMass then the Globe.

Hope we become members.

I hope UMASS gets the spot and we become their permanent cross-division rival. Gives East and West each an outlier and a once every six years extra long trip . That would be as far as cross division.

Umass FCS?

No. The administration wants to get football and basketball in the same conference eventually. That isn't happening in the FCS.

UMASS AD John McCutcheon, "We're focused on our commitment to the FBS level, which we are resolute about."

I remember UMass fans from the 2006 FCS Title game. All 30 of them. At least their band was awesome.

Yes, yes, good times...App St, GA Sou and UMass. All we need now is Montana and JMU and we'll have a mighty fine football conference with the cream from the FCS. If Liberty doesn't make it in this time around, and that is seemingly more than likely the case now, they will be in in the next few years guaranteed.

How on earth do two news organizations copying the same thing CBS said have to do with Liberty.

The article actually said nothing we didn't already know. UMass and the SBC have talked. So have Liberty and the SBC. So have EKU and the SBC.
