Expansion remains hot topic in Sun Belt circles
Quote:When athletic directors and administrators of Sun Belt Conference schools gather about a week-and-a-half from now in Destin, Fla., for the league's annual spring meetings, possible expansion is likely to be one subject of conversation.

It typically is whenever the conference's decision-makers meet, and especially around this time of year.

"Obviously conference expansion … will be discussed," UL athletic director Scott Farmer said this week.

Farmer declined to disclose specifics of what sort of talk is anticipated.

New Mexico State for all sports seems a LITTLE more possible if this writer is correct.

I'm going to be staying at the Emerald Grande from the 14th thru 23rd. Anyone know where the meetings will be held?

And what needs to be remembered.

When NMSU was shot down, the vote on whether to add them all-sports was a vote to make them the 13th all-sports member.

They will scrap the bottom of the barrel to add as many teams as possible when the next exodus occurs. I don't find the new CUSA particularly appealing. If we can get a better TV contract I could see USM and maybe another school moving our way. If not there will be another exodus.

RE: Expansion remains hot topic in Sun Belt circles
Seems to me NMSU's chances will hinge on how badly the SBC presidents want to get to 12 FB schools, and their willingness to live with an apparent temporary arrangement with UMass for FB-only. Doesn't make any sense to add NMSU as all sports if they don't take UMass as well.

The SBC could easily just wait a year and see if Missouri State is ready, and if so then be at 12/12 without the hassle of dealing with another FB-only school that is way out of the footprint for 2-4 years. NMSU is not going anywhere, and I doubt if UMass is either.

Though, I'd love for NMSU to get the invite.

If there's more money expect your school an UL to book it out of the Belt at lighting speed.

And there is zero evidence that they, or anyone better, has any interest in expanding.

If anyone does expand there is no evidence they wouldn't take TXST, USA, NMSU or GaSt.

My opinion but I think the 16 mega conferences are coming soon to the g-5. That's the only way I see more movement in the g-5.

There better be more money in it...and I don't see that there is.

Not more money per se but decreased travel cost will help. The stipend / cost of attendance issue will pass as too many people want to see it happen. While it will be a conference/school decision. Most have stated that their school will offer something to keep up at the highest level. So the next step would be creating conferences that cut down on travel so you can offer x amount to stay competitive for recruits. Also a school to x conference can help move contract dollars even if it is a small bump.

NMSU was the only SBC school that was really mentioned as next up to bat.

I knew there was one ASU guy that was Belt or bust. I guess you are him. The Cajuns and ASU are the most likely teams to leave next. If the TV money evens out among other things then there's no reason to leave. If not we are a gone pecan.

Hmmm. I mention that nobody is expanding, and has no seeming need to...and that somehow makes me Sun Belt or bust? Oookay.

TV money makes zero difference...an INVITATION is the only thing that makes a difference. And there isn't one of those and none hinted at. And IF there is ever an invitation NMSU has been the only one mentioned by anyone associated with CUSA.

Tons of speculation all over the place in the months leading up to the SBC meetings, but in the last few weeks it has been quieter and quieter as most have come to the realization that the Sun Belt probably is holding steady at 11 for another year.
