Expansion remains hot topic in Sun Belt circles

Can we just call a huge summit between the two conferences and hammer this out? Might need to flip Troy with LaTech just to keep them from complaining. But that's close to perfect.

Youre going to have to provide a home for everyone if you want to have a summit and hammer out a deal that creates more regional conferences. Im not sure why everyone is leaving Rice out.

The SWC group would have to include UTEP, TxSt, UTSA, Rice, N Tex, Arky St, ULL, ULM, and LaTech. That's going to be the core. You could stop there and play a round robin or go to 12.

Nope because that's not how it works. Unless the NCAA and CFP take a kind eye to starting a new FBS league the only way to fix it would be for a group of CUSA to come here followed by a group of Sun Belt going to replace them.

CUSA
South: FAU, FIU, Ga So, GaSt, UAB, Troy
North: App, Charlotte, JMU, Marshall, Ohio U, ODU
OhioU isn't at the summit ... you sure they'll want to join? Though if they won't, if the eastern side is called CUSA, you could always backfill with JMU.

However, given the way that it would actually work, as arkstfan points out, it would be hard to force LA Tech out of CUSA into the Sunbelt. So regarding:
Quote:The SWC group would have to include UTEP, TxSt, UTSA, Rice, N Tex, Arky St, ULL, ULM, and LaTech. ...
... scratching LA Tech from that list would have to be considered. And if UTEP is on that list, adding travel partner NMSU to that list also has to be considered.

I think if there is a "summit", the end result is the meeting is deadlocked and nothing happens. However, as arkstfan notes, if the Sunbelt is interested and the western CUSA schools are interested, some degree of disentangling could happen through sequential moves.

On that, step one in the dosey doe is:
UTEP, UNT, Rice, UTSA join the Sunbelt, NMSU upgraded to all-sports.

SB1 West: NMSU, UTEP, UNT, Rice, UTSA, TX St., ULL
SB1 East: ULM, USA, Troy, GA So, GA St., Appy St., Ark St.

CUSA1 Central: Marshall, WKU, ODU, UNCC, MTSU, WKU
CUSA1 Gulf: FIU, FAU, UAB, S Miss, LA Tech

... so how does CUSA counter?

(1) CUSA could respond by inviting one school and standing at 12
(2) CUSA could respond by inviting three school, returning to 14
(3) CUSA could respond by inviting two schools and inviting a FCS transitional school, returning to 14.

Each response leads in a different direction.

Expansion remains hot topic in Sun Belt circles
There are actually 64 schools outside the P5, so a 4 x 16 could work if the CFP contract were renegotiated.

MWC - adds Idaho, UTEP, Rice, North Texas

AAC - adds UTSA, UMass, Old Dominion, BYU (football only)

MAC - adds WKU, MTSU, Army, Marshall

SBC - adds Louisiana Tech, UAB, Southern Miss, Charlotte, FAU, FIU

But... What would drive the MWC to add Idaho, UTEP, or North Texas?

What would drive the AAC to add UTSA, or BYU (football only)? The BYU is the head scratcher, as they are nearly on the other coast... Not quite, but FAR closer to MWC footprint than AAC.

Movements have to make sense. The adds you mention don't make sense.

It's actually reasonable for CUSA & Sun Belt to reshuffle, as the regional rivalries and short travel should (theoretically) increase interest and television revenue.

But short of the SBC moves, none of the proposed moves accomplish any of that.

SEC adds Idaho and the PAC 12 adds FAU. Oh you guys were serious? Well how about Univ of Phoenix in the new SBCUSA South Central West division with ULM, La Tech, ULL, and Ark St. Hey, do you guys think that would be able to steal LSU, Tulane, and Arkansas. The next round of TV deals will show that nobody cares about the SEC anymore, so this is only a matter of time.

Half of you forgot SBC or CUSA programs that would obviously fit into this footprint and the other half think that Ohio or Marshall would want any part of this. I know this is going to sound very harsh, but there's no other way to say it: if you don't know wtf you're talking about, then don't talk about it. This isn't ESPN, this is a place for informed discussions.

Seriously, two pages of crap just like this?

I don't mind most of it. But my God, actually predicting the divisions of the conferences that will never happen, while totally forgetting programs and including those that would NEVER make this move, is where I have to draw the line.

And this is coming from the guy that spent an hour on conference realignment in his NCAA 14 dynasty. At least I know that my conference moves in the game are fictional and will never happen.

But then, if you recognize that you can't just swap some schools like baseball cards, why not the rest? For instance, why in the world would LA Tech move to a conference containing ULM? It seems a lot more likely that they would stay put than move.

The "sit down and have a summit" just won't work ... the "summit" will deadlock and nothing will happen. Scratch underneath the surface, and it's still imagining conferences trading schools like trading baseball cards, which isn't how it works.

Now the Western CUSA schools could indeed bolt to the Sunbelt if they wanted to, and if they did, it might set off some partial geographic consolidation but ...

... (1) likely far from perfect, for reasons like the LA Tech / ULM scenario, and also because its just as possible that CUSA makes a smaller counter-raid than a big one, leaving a lot of overlap still in place ...

... and (2) they'd have to want to move first, or the ball doesn't get rolling in the first place, and things would have to shift a ways from where they are now, in terms of both media money and bowl lineups, for them to want to move.

CUSA is living off of what they used to be. Still none of their teams are coming here. Even though we still have a better football league even with the move ups the media put them above us. That is going to be hard to change. For instance Myerburg has an article on SBC spring football. He states that UL is a perennial bowl contender...that's true. Yet he ranks StAte in the next tier. Even though we have gone to 3 straight bowl games just like UL. Even though we have two conf. championships and a tie to one tie for them. The reason is we have a coach a year and they have had one guy. The point being the media at times are idiots.

For general sports reporters who don't have a Go5 conference as part of their regular beat, and so who only occasionally write about the Go5 schools, the shorthand for status is going to be number of bowl tie-ins and size of media payouts. That lets you give a quick response with publicly verifiable numbers and avoids a prospective time suck in arguments on the question. Overturning the ranking that comes out of that requires a lot of work and media visibility.

If there's been a shift in relative status that shows up in a shift in relative media payout, then those kind of low-info views will change in reaction to that.

And at the same time, moves like Western CUSA schools bolting become more likely if there is a shift in CUSA payout, in part because of how CUSA exit fees are indexed to CUSA media payout. So the date for those scenarios are 2016 or later to set them in motion, so likely 2018 or later for them to occur.

Any thinking about any kinds of moves along those lines are in "wait and see" mode until the next CUSA contract is negotiated.

Don't get me wrong, NCAA Dynasty conferences is my jam. I made all conferences based strictly on geography, no matter the size of the program. I also got rid of AQ tie-ins because all conferences are based on geography, and not program size therefor there is no need for AQs.
For example, South Alabama just upset Ole Miss and Auburn in two straight weeks.

Some of you guys are making far too much out of this. What's the harm in some wild, crazy speculation all in good fun? Besides, nobody's holding a gun to your head forcing you to read it. If you don't like the topic, move on to the next and stop complaining. Freedom of expression is a beautiful thing about living in a free society.
