Looks as if all those new condos and apartments would be good for your student base also, and really convenient to a sports complex there.

RE: Georgia State Could Be Getting New Digs
Yes we have defended the atmosphere in the dome because when we had 30,000 in there for the first game it was terrific. When we had 26,000 for the opener in year two it was terrific. Especially with the soccer configuration of the new dome capping capacity at 30,000 (which we would have presumably used) then I was a huge supporter of staying in the Dome.
I'd be shocked if someone said we didn't pay for the dome. The 75k number is well publicized.
I am very interested to see how the financials work. If it's on athletics to raise a lot then I just don't see how this can happen. I have heard the BOR wants this to happen and is willing to play ball with us. We also just had a huge capital campaign for our centennial, but I doubted much of that would go to Athletics. The key is whether or not we can sell that the complex as a whole will be used by the university as well as athletics. If we can show that and BOR buys it, we can use university funds.
I'm still skeptical. Even if it Athletics has to pick up $40 million (just a number someone throughout earlier in the thread), we still would have had to play football for over 80 years in the dome at 75,000 per game to reach that much. That's assuming the rent stays the same. But even if it doubles. 40 years in a brand new state of the art facility or our own 30,000 seat outdoor stadium that we are in charge of upkeep for... I take the new dome.
The best part about the whole deal for me personally is the baseball stadium. I totally geeked out when I read that the Hank Aaron wall would be incorporated into the structure of the new stadium. Talk about a recruiting tool.

Sounds as if the Mayor may be behind it also, if so that is a good push.
Even though there are four other groups, and the Braves could keep it for up to
20 years, with city support, especially preserving the wall and the mixed use it
would bring to downtown would think GSU would have the inside edge.

I can't see where Athletics builds or picks up anything. It will be some combination of the GSU Foundation, private money and bonds. And remember that the Mayor, GSU President and Carter (developer) would have been there today if this was not happening. I think Doug Roberson described them as "determined". This is happening the way the Falcons Stadium is happening. Becker is on record now as wanting an OCS. in Atlanta politics we have hit the point of no return today.

If the BoR bends over backwards to make this work for you, I hope Dr Keel has a very serious conversation with them after how we got raked over the coals about our athletics projects. I'm not saying that you shouldn't get some help, but we were required to have 100% of funding in hand before we could even break ground. Even then we were delayed because the decision was tabled at least once even after we had everything in place. I understand there's more at stake here than just athletics improvements, but a major focus here is for athletics purposes so I think the point has some merit.

Help for an Athletic facility is a hard sell politically.. I am betting we get zero help form state funds.

It will be interesting for sure. Obviously the GSU leadership would have to do one hell of a sell job to convince the BoR that this is a university project and not just an athletics one. Is putting classrooms, perhaps moving our kinesiology and hospitality departments, building student housing and academic offices enough? Can we classify the entire complex as one entity and thus use state funds?
Lots of development still to go on this. FWIW, have heard the likelihood of this coming to fruition is about 50-50 (which IMO is much higher than I would have thought). Going to be interesting.

I do hope this works out in GA State's favor. New housing, baseball, and football stadium would be awesome for the Sun Belt Conference. Turner Field is a great place to enjoy a game and all the THUG talk of downtown is totally overrated. As a GA Southern grad living in Atlanta, this would be great for the State of GA and the Sun Belt Conference. But, their first season probabl won't start until 2019?

I liked the artist rendering and the general concept of grouping a lot of different facilities and resources in one location.
Plus 5,000 fans will look more intimidating in a 35,000 seat facility than in a 70,000 seat facility.

RE: Georgia State Could Be Getting New Digs
Hope it does happen. I looked at the artist renderings and early concept pics. My only question is where would fans park for the football games? I only saw the commuter parking lot on the other side of the baseball stadium (which is great for baseball games) and that doesn't look large enough to hold that many fans (even if they don't allow tents/tailgating).
Is there parking nearby that isn't pictured?
Also, for those complaining/concerned about the look of the football stadium, there is only so much you can do when converting a baseball stadium. If you want an idea of how it could look, check out Portland Timbers' stadium. It was converted from a minor league baseball stadium and holds ~21K. GaSt's will be much larger, but the general idea will be there. Also, the large stands behind the endzone would be awesome for student seating. Get 8-10K back there and it'll be a wall of noise for opposing teams.
Good luck

It will be interesting to see this play out. It's a good idea, but the folks in South Georgia need to watch the money on this one. I saw a $300 million figure thrown out there. GA State Athletics are already 86% subsidized and other schools have to jump through hoops and bow three times to get $30 million for faculty support.
It's a great idea and would be great for GAST, but not with public funds.

RE: Georgia State Could Be Getting New Digs
Many of us are asking the same questions about parking. But take in to account that one of the main complaints from neighbors has been the acres and acres of surface lots. Not sure how tailgating will work or parking. Are they looking at other properties nearby (GA Archives, Department of Driver Services)? Of course this is conceptual at this point so I am sure there will be a 2nd and 14th draft. Same for the stadium. Its a rough sketch at this point. I am sure that much like the Arthur Dome we will see stadium specific concepts moving forward. Would be great to keep the existing South, East and West facade regardless of what is torn down/built inside.

The drawing of the football stadium seems really off. Not liking the first draft there.
It's actually growing on me. Basically keeping the entire outer shell, concourses (and the Brave's office building) of the Ted, and making it into a football stadium. Of course, I grew up going to Tech games, so a wacky-looking stadium feels like home to me.
