The only way I know to train for them is by running them.

That's what I told her.. Told her to find a hill and sprint up, and walk down.

There was a method an old SF guy told me.. He said to train doing hills and flats.. One day run flat surfaces.. The next run hilly surfaces.

That's what I'm currently doing. I run in my neighborhood on MWF mornings and then I run over at the Battlefield on TR mornings and then take extended walks on Sundays.

Ran a 5k this morning. Couple big uphills that I couldn't quite make it all the way without walking and I got stopped due to police letting traffic through twice but overall a good run. Brought my average down a bit so I was pleased with that. Next up is the trail run next month on 9/13.

Ran in a company sponsored 5K yesterday. 28:04. Got a side ache at the 3mi mark, so I was bummed not to finish stronger. Winning time was 16:16.

Obviously not great, but not terrible either.

That's still a really awesome time. For my age group I'd have to improve my time by nearly 20 minutes to be competitive. I may get there one day but for now I continue to try to complete the damn distance without having to stop to walk.

I am walking between 35-42 miles a week. I purchased new shoes a couple weeks ago, so I can alternate shoes. Recently, I have been eating a banana before walking or jogging and drinking Gatorade, too. This is a switch from just drinking water. I am down 15 pounds or so. Rock and roll!04-cheers

Damn, that's a lot of walking! I alternate my activities and I'm still working to get in shape so I'm not covering nearly that much ground. According to Runkeeper I've done 8.1 miles this week. I'll be adding another 3.4 tonight after I hit the trails.

RE: Running/Jogging/Walking
So I completed the 'Assault on Kennesaw Mountain' 5k on Saturday. What a beast!

The first 1.5 mile is flat. The second 1.6 is all uphill with a steady incline the whole way. My hips and calves were on fire all day Sunday. Very cool race and a great reason to run supporting a memorial wall for the GA National Guardsmen who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Still trying to find a good October race.

Piece o' cake.

Even though I'm not a KK fan at all, this intrigues me.

I've been running my flat 5ks in about 45 minutes (yes, I'm a turtle).

This one took me 54 minutes mostly because I was sure I was going to die at about 2.5 miles in.

Yea, but think of all the people you beat that didn't even attempt it. I didn't do one Saturday, so you beat me.
