Track & Field - April 17-19
Tonight, two of our women, Cali Roper and Katie Jensen, both freshmen, will be competing in the invitational elite section of the 10,000 meters at the Mt SAC Relays. This meet has the well-earned reputation of producing the fastest distance times for collegiate and professional runners. The goal is to post a time that will qualify them for the 1st round of the NCAA Track & Field Championships.
They will race at 10:27 pm CDT. Here is the link for RESULTS.
A number of the women's team will be at the Kansas Relays (me, too), and the guys will be at UTSA.

The top 48 from the East and the top 48 from the West in each individual event will advance to the NCAA 1st round, based solely on time or mark. Almost all qualifiers hit the distance time at Mt SAC or at one of the two Stanford meets.
Last season, the time for #48 in the West was 35:17.

In one of the sections of the Mt SAC men's 10,000, Will Firth finished 17th in 30:20.83, while John Cavallo was 34th in 30:54.28.
Last season, it took 29:47.08 to make the West's top 48.

Zach Watterson ran a section of the 800 meters today here at the Kansas Relays. His time of 1:56.84 was his 2nd best ever.
That time by Will Firth at Mt SAC was a lifetime best.

Cali finished 9th in 34:18.42!!!
Last year, that time would have been #19 in the West.

A little off topic, but future Owl Madi McClellan (The Woodlands) currently is #7 in the nation among high school girls in the 1600 meters (4:50.70). She is #17 in the 3200 (10:26.91).

I read, and am interested in, your track threads, but have very little to offer that would be of substance or worthwhile.
Please do not discontinue posting, as lack of response by many of us is solely due to our felt inability to add substantively to the discussion.
When you post high school rankings/times, what is the source? Athletic.net? Is that too mundane a source, or too limited? If so, then you can probably guess that the ignorance of my question is one of the reasons I (and maybe others) feel unqualified to post on track.

Good suggestion.

Me too.
Same here. I know precious little about track & field, despite sitting next to J Fred in the press box for years. Without your posts, I would know nothing about Rice track & field. Please keep up the good work.

Quick check. The site you provide and Athletic.net matched 100% on the 3200 meter girls list for the Top 25, but both sites included a meet in California this week that produced at least 50 to 75% of the Top 25 times.
Checking the 1600 meter girls, your site has a meet up that just occurred that hasn't made athletic.net, but there are also 2 or 3 names missing on the athletic.net site within the Top 20 from a March meet and another event.
Fairly close agreement. Your site appears to be updated a bit quicker, and slightly more comprehensive. You may have insight as to why.

I too like the updates. Unfortunately, west coast racing was too late for me to actively follow. Please keep providing insight.

Tonight, also at Mt SAC, Lennie Waite, coming off a lifetime best in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at Stanford, will be trying to improve her time. She will be in the invitational steeplechase (event #214). That race is scheduled for 9:22 p.m. CDT.

OT, but Hall of Fame coach Tom Tellez was seriously injured in a traffic accident while driving from Houston to his home in Port Isabel. He is in ICU. Prayers for a full and speedy recovery.
