He was against JMU going FBS, so why would he be so unhappy.

RE: JMU Fans:
Did Everette tell you that personally?
Or maybe that's what the JMU admin wants him to say?
I know he is very competitive and I have a hard time believing he took a pay cut and collegiate downgrade to be a head coach in nowhere Va

Withers? Where or when did he ever indicate he was against going FBS? I think you're thinking of Mickey Mathews. He got fired after last season.

Go over to the JMU board and read some of the threads. Found it hard to believe since
they only recently hired him, but that's what they say.

I knew Matthews was gone. He really had some good quotes.
He definately wanted to stay FCS.

That is all posture. EV is way to competitive. He was an NFL coach. Highest paid college DC. Head coach at UnC. Assistant head coach at OSU.....his days are numbered if this stays the same.

From what I was told today by a prominent JMU supporter Withers was not for moving to the SunBelt. Seems old Everette says with JMU's academic standards he can't recruit the type of players to compete in the SB. Sounds to me like a guy who realizes he has huge advantages over the remaining FCS schools east of the Rockies and wants to build a resume. Come play in the best stadium and enjoy great support facilities! He'll win a lot of games then land a FBS job.

I have no idea why he took that job at JMU. Should have stayed at Ohio State I thought. Him being an App State grad am rooting for him, but there were several posters who said he wanted to stay FCS.

I know quite a lot of guys, including myself, who said they would give more when we made the move to FBS. The following MONTH after the announcement Yosef $'s went through the roof.

Release: Friday 05/03/2013 (ET)
"BOONE, N.C. — On the heels of Appalachian State University's announcement that it had accepted an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference, supporters donated over $600,000 to the Yosef Club in the month of April, senior associate director of athletics Rick Beasley announced on Friday.

The $603,300 in donations to the Yosef Club — Appalachian State athletics' fundraising arm — is a single-month record, smashing the previous record of $434,370 that was raised last April. The record support came in the first month after Appalachian announced that it would join the NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference on July 1, 2014."

A lot of guys I know were against 1-AA from the day we were shoved into it. However, we continued to give and even increased our pledges all those years. We supported App even though we disliked what our administration was doing. Now, some of the guys who used to blast us for our low opinion of 1-AA / FCS have stopped giving because of the move. And they used to call us unreasonable and negative.

This had the potential to be one of the most intense rivalries in the SBC and it could have really benefited both schools, it would not have surprised me if you would have eventually seen 35,000 plus at the football games. I wonder if its really worth it for the JMU administration to give up so much just to wait for an invitation from the MAC/USA that may never come.

None taken from this Eagle fan. Georgia Southern and James Madison had some great games in the 80's, and though Southern ended up in the win column for most of them they were all battles. The potential you speak of is where I do think JMU was shortsighted, because how many of them have the past history in mind when thinking about what could have been ? My guess is it didn't come into play in their evaluation of the landscape.

I find Benson's comments very telling as well. JMU seems to be hinging their hopes on CUSA / MAC ... and I think Benson's comments are a tacit way of saying that isn't happening. Otherwise, he would have merely maintained the worn out previous line about many, many schools showing interest, and not pegging JMU out individually.

Right?!

I mean that is absurd. Even if JMU were this beacon of academia that they hold themselves up as, they're standards aren't any different for athletes than any Sun Belt, CAA, or MAC squad.

Enjoy rotting in the FCS. Kids that aren't qualified for admission at JMU can always settle for Harvard or Yale.

We'll see. Wither's past defenses have been porous almost to the point being worthy of ours!

Same for GS when we use to play JMU in the 80's and early 90's. That was my favorite "rivalry" growing up before we joined the SoCon. It would have been nice to rekindle that one.

Which ironic b/c if JMU had accepted a potential SBC invite, he would have had a FBS job in 2015.

RE: JMU Fans:
Withers is a good coach and should be able to bring in good talent (already brought in Vad Lee from GT and a WR from South Carolina), but I do wonder about his defense. People are very high on new OC Drew Mehringer who is considered to be a prodigy (only like 26 years old). I think Mehringer is the first to bolt if the DUkes see success. I think a lot of FBS jobs are going to be skeptical of Withers considering he's a career co-ordinator.
