To be fair to LU, had the Big South had an auto-bid to the FCS prior to a couple years ago, they would have made it a few times. I seem to remember them winning the Big South a couple of years. I'd expect LU to have better results with their resources though.

With that kind of money Georgia State just might be able to buy the Ted.

Maybe they should become very aggressive at being successful at the FCS level first.
What's their all-time record in the FCS playoffs, again?

I guess they once ended the season at #14, which goes part of the way to explaining why so many FBS conference are fighting to be the one to invite Liberty.

I believe the best answer for Liberty would be: "Undefeated" 03-drunk

Yea - just what they need. Another professional sports arena in Atlanta that they have 27 fans show up for.

Just kidding GAST. Really - I hope you get it - I think it would be a good move for you and the Belt.

RE: Still sounds like Sun Belt is determined to go to 12 FB teams
If comparing JMU and Liberty from an ATHLETICS and RESOURCES perspective only, is JMU really a better option? The other issues have been debated over and over, but this is looking only from an athletics/football impact to the SBC.

Location for SBC - same
Facilities - both have nice new stadiums
Football performance - recently, both have been about the same. JMU beat vt 4 yrs ago and natl title 10 years ago.
Attendance - edge to JMU by 4k or so
Money - hands down Liberty as they have close to $1 billion that they have to spend.
TV - both rural, but Liberty has a tv network.

So, in terms of impact on the conference from a football/athletics only standpoint, JMU really does not bring more than Liberty. Also, Liberty would bring stability and potentially help the strengthen the conference long term whereas JMU would only continue the current realignment structure where teams leave the SBC for a "higher tier" conference. Liberty would not contribute to this trend and with their resources could grow the program more than any current SBC program.

It is critical for the SBC to reverse the trend of teams leaving and with CUSA bloated at 14, the SBC actually has a chance to grow programs and build the conference.

If you're looking for a potential program with money, Liberty is going to lead the pack. Religion is a powerful thing. But I did want to address this thought that I've seen repeated over and over again that JMU would just bolt the Sun Belt as soon as possible. One thing JMU is is loyal to a fault. JMU was loyal to the CAA in times when they could and perhaps should have bolted such as the 90s when the A-10 was looking at us and the last few years when JMU should have moved up when peers like App State and ODU moved on. JMU is looking for stability and, for whatever reason, did not see the Sun Belt as a good long term fit. Barring major turnover in the administration, I'm willing to bet that whatever FBS conference JMU ends up in will be its home for a long time.

Imagine the money drop they could do at one of next season's games!

Doesn't Liberty have its own network?
Perhaps they should offer this up as the start of the SBC network

They would probably be agreeable. MAC at 12. sB at 12. Split the fee and give UMass a 6 year agreement with a 3 year renew/cancel notice after 3 years. That gives UMass 4 extra years to get thier stuff together and allows the SB to dump them easily if a good prospect shows up on the radar. You may find it works best to keep them around and dump Idaho when a better prospect emerges.

Assuming the conference schedules could be reconfigured, the MAC might even waive the exit fee. All 12 schools would have 83,333 reasons each to get UMass off their hands.

The MAC would have to reshuffle a lot of games, though - Miami (OH) and Bowling Green don't play each other despite being in the same division, but don't have a common open date.

The MAC will not dump UMass right now, given the schedule is in place. Now after this season is a different story. They may be improving, but that is still a major dumpster fire there(I will not go to Nuclear Wasteland just yet, that statement is reserved for certain schools).

Doesn't matter if UMass pays the 500K. Didn't Temple leave the MAC with similar notice.

They did(the then Big East was so desperate to have Temple Basketball, but had to take their Football also). Keep in mind that Temple also had to pay the MAC 6 Million also to do it.
