I believe that Coastal Carolina made a statement a few months ago that it was not interested in FBS at all at this time.

So it really sounds like if we took Liberty's facilities and put them at Coastal Carolina, EKU's AD and shipped him to Coastal Carolina, and then shipped Benson to... Timbuktu... It'd be a slam dunk.

-Liberty has a large and fanatical fan base. It showed very well at ODU last year from both numbers and behavior standpoints
-Liberty has a $1 billion endowment, which means that it is not likely to falter financially with the transition.
-Liberty has new FBS ready and expandable football facilities.
and maybe most importantly,
-Liberty has a television network. Didn't the SBC just lose a regional carrier?

I don't care for politics and/or religion being part of athletics, but, at least for the one experience I had with them at ODU; they seemed to have left all that at home.

All reasons why a reasonable person would see Liberty is clearly now the #1 choice for the Sun Belt in addition to their excellent fit for the footprint.

What about moving the 100 golf courses and 2000 hotels. Convincing the 14 million tourist to go to the new location.

Or Coastal could get their billionaire coach to expand the stadium to twenty thousand . The stadium was built with expansion to twenty thousand in mind. They are finishing up a new baseball softball complex right now.

Why go to 14? Just cuts back on money the teams would get. ...
Exactly. You would analyze it as (1) which is the best school to get to 12, and (2) after that school, is there an additional pair that is worth diluting the conference scheduling and conference payout.

But if there was a solid answer for (2), then (1) wouldn't be so dang hard.

Correction.
I took my endowment figure from a reporter...my bad.
Liberty's endowment is actually about 59 million, not a billion.

Endowment is the old school way of determining a school's wealth. Liberty has a billion in assets and is one of the highest credit ratings of any school in the country. Our cash is not tied up in endowments but has liquidity. But this is yet another sidebar discussion that really isn't particularly relevant to determining how many schools the Sun Belt will land on after expansion.

Yeah, my original premise was that Liberty has the funds to move up without any strain. 1.2 billion in liquid assets more than compensates for the endowment number. That is in fact, quite extraordinary.

Would you guys buy us a new stadium? You could pay cash and never miss it! 02-13-banana

I believe that they have plenty of liquid assets to move up. Their problem is that they are not allowed to move up without an invitation. The only possible way for them to get an invitation is convince a conference whose members don't have plenty of liquid assets to invite them.

They need to be allowed to enter FBS as an independent. They have the cash for it. If they are not allowed to enter FBS as an independent then they need to sue...and I think they would win.

I think it would be good for the Sun Belt to offer some sort of scheduling agreement with Liberty if they entered as an independent.

1.2 billion in liquid cash? Thats really not a Sun Belt number.

Money invested in a conference is money invested in LU, could be a win win for all.

1.2 billion in liquid cash? Thats really not a Sun Belt number.

The invite rule was actually a request from NCAA staff in dealing with move-ups (both from Division II to I and from FCS to FBS). Scheduling requirement monitoring was a real problem for them.

For example in football, if you were moving FCS to FBS you had to show the NCAA you had contracts or agreements in place to meet the schedule requirement (at the time merely 7 games, site of no consequence) for four years.

Because deals get broken or games pushed back, reclassifying schools were having to report the changes and if there was little time to adjust, seek waivers if they couldn't find a replacement.

The conference invite rule basically mooted the problem.

I think the data shows teams having a league to move into tend transition more smoothly.

Liberty or some potential plaintiff might prevail but all that will happen is we go back to schools having to line up four years worth of contracts and agreements, except now they will have to show five countable home games for each of those years. Could easily win the battle and still lose the war unless you've got schools willing to go home/home.

I've heard liberty has no interest in going that route.
