Quote:Resolution in Support of Moving to FBS Football
T. Louwers

Whereas there are many positives associated with moving up a level in college football,
including raising University visibility on a national scale, increasing the University’s ability to
recruit out-of-state students within a new conference’s regional “foot print”, and reconnecting
with alumni who may have lost contact with the University, be it resolved that the Faculty Senate
supports (or doesn’t oppose) the Athletic Department’s proposed move to the FBS-level of
collegiate football as long as the move does not negatively affect the academic mission of the
University by increasing student fees to subsidize the reclassification. To demonstrate that this
would not be the case, the JMU Faculty Senate calls for the JMU Athletic Department/Duke
Club to solicit an increase in alumni and friend commitments totaling at least $12 million over a
five-year period prior to applying for reclassification

The above was put forth by the JMU Faculty Senate in November.
Additionally, The Harper Resolution and McGraw Proposal containing similar sentiments, are contained within the minutes.
https://www.jmu.edu/facultysenate/_files...111713.pdf

This needs to be put on the JMU board.

It was, but it seems it was ignored.

Maybe from the November 2013 Faculty Senate presentations; specifically the Lowers Resolution,

as well as the Harper Resolution and the McGraw Proposal.

Man it's hard to ignore something like that. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

If JMU's athletic budget is anywhere near what it is stated to be,
do not see the reasoning for arbitrarily requesting they raise
twelve million in five years. Sounds more like a reason to get
them to put off FBS. Almost all faculties oppose the FBS move
so that is not anything new.

This latest "no" vote was more than just saying no to the Sun Belt. It was a decision to say no to I-A football, period. MAC and CUSA are not expanding and the SBC was/is JMU's only chance.

I believe that will upset the JMU fanbase more than anything. They might have still been split about which conference is the best for them, but the majority wanted I-A ball in the end. That door is now closed and JMU will remain in 1-aa (or whatever it becomes after the P5 and G5 split) for the foreseeable future.

Maybe they believe a P5/G5 split is coming and the difference in FCS and G5-left-behind football wont be significant to most casual fans. If there were a split, there would probably be some opportunity for the top FCS schools to move up in all the upheaval surrounding the P5/G5 split and subsequent reorganization. They may see making a move now as risky and prefer to see how things shake out during this summers NCAA governance debate. I think they have made a mistake and are missing the last ticket onto the boat for a while.

I think that's pretty absurd. They are in a lot better shape than a lot of schools that have made the jump before them and had success.

In their defense JMU is attempting to build a $60 million (or in that neighborhood) basketball arena and they still have a lot of debt retirement on the field house and stadium. JMU also has some of the highest student fees around and from what I understand are prohibited by the Virginia Legislature from raising them over what amounts to be a cost of living increase. Their administration made many of the same mistakes App's did in regards to CUSA. Never tell your fans you have a invite unless you have it in writing. Their administration is in a very tough spot.

First of all, that split crap ain't going to happen. The AQ's need us only slightly less than we need them. We listened to that garbage excuse to stay FCS for way too long.

Second: If there was a split (or they believed one to be coming) - then that should lessen their concerns for moving up. It would only give them a leg up on others that would wait. In the mean time, they would be earning the extra million a year from the CFP and gaining a recruiting advantage.

It's really a catch 22. Building support for a program that shows little interest in doing more is hard to do. Been there, done that. "Build it and they will come". Funny that they actually did build it, the invite comes and getting FBS teams coming for almost every home game is a real possibility for growing excitement and seeing fans travel to their games... and then they get this.

If JMU doesn't grab this opportunity by the horns, then they are going to need our prayers. With ODU and maybe Liberty moving on, it would really be a source of discontent for their fans.

Their operations budget is very much in line with ours pre-FBS. Their published numbers are inflated because they include facility costs in their athletic budget as well as operational costs. Apples and oranges.

To be clear, I think they are making a mistake. I just threw that out as a possible explanation of what they could be thinking. Personally, I dont think a split is actually coming. I think this may be last open seat on the bus for quite some time and JMU is making a mistake. JMU's mistake might be a temporary life line for UMass.

It was emphasised JMU does not have an invite to CUSA or the MAC as neither conference will be expanding in the foreseeable future. This is likely JMU's last opportunity to make the FBS move for some time to come. There are obviously financial situations in play as President Alger has told JMU alumni groups he would pursue FBS if someone steps up and writes a 7 figure check. It is believed the SunBelt will now pursue UMass for football only and NMSU for all sports.

This is where I stopped reading...

If they cannot afford it truthfully, then they cannot afford it. Would be the same with Sun Belt, CUSA, or MAC it sounds like. You just would want to shake your administration though if they didn't tell you that long before now. Seems their Carr Report didn't see it the same way their administration does. Guess Liberty is the only potential Virginia candidate left. Would hate to be a Dukes fan under these circumstances.

I guess I don't understand. If money is the issue are they saying they would not move up even if there was a MAC or CUSA invite?

Why would that group approve those stadium renovations if they're too pee shy to pull the trigger on varsity football?

I'm very disappointed, but it must be 10x worse for JMU fans.

Ahhh, the question that CAN be answered.

That stadium (Bridgeforth) renovation was done during the administration of JMU president Linwood Rose, who was quite open and vocal about his opposition to JMU moving up to FBS.

Therefore it was nothing more than fiscally prudent to have an expandable stadium that could be built up in stages from 25k as needed.
Rose approved of the project with no intention of ever seeing JMU move to D1A (FBS)

RE: JMU Says No to the SunBelt
The money scenario makes zero sense.

The AD has been told - both by Carr and through Duke Club surveys - that donations will drop significantly if we do not move up and staying FCS will cause us greater financial distress than moving up.

They would be completely ignoring that data by using money as the reason not to move up.

I'm not saying it didn't happen because our admin has done dumber things before, but it just completely defies logic.

RE: JMU Says No to the SunBelt
JMU very well could have said no to the Sunbelt, but the idea JMU wouldn't go to the MAC/CUSA if invited today seems incorrect IMO. There are fiscal concerns and an overreliance on student fees, but I have always been under the impression JMU doesn't think the Sun Belt is a good fit geographically (students don't come from south) as well as academic concerns (staying with peers).
