Guys, I think we should remember not to kick the JMU fans while they digest this if true.

They probably have enough anger without us piling on. I think the vast majority of the JMU fans on here are very supportive of JMU's candidacy to the Belt (if they weren't last year, virtually all are now)

Tom, where was this support of us Liberty fans when we were happy last Monday and then down on Tuesday? 05-stirthepot03-hissyfit

So, you think it would have been wise for their president to say "We won't make a move until the feasibility study is completed," then a few months later say "nevermind! we are moving!"?

It makes no sense to say since they didn't come last year, they don't want to come when it was stated well before we even talked to inviting them that they wouldn't move last year.

Now, they could say no this year, and then you can shut the door on them. But last year? no way.

JMU just doesn't have interest in the Sun Belt-- didn't last year and doesn't this year.

I look forward to the day when I can support a (or at least not oppose) LU candidacy. I feel bad for those that love LU but are stuck with an administration that interprets the Bible in such a way that it somehow mandates employment discrimination and whatever Mat Staver is doing/advocating.

I can see where you're coming from. I was directing my view more toward the JMU administration than its fans. As my handle should indicate, I know a healthy number of JMU fans/alumni. I do feel bad for them.

I think, Tom, that JMU fans as a whole are going to be pretty sore at their Administration for passing on this opportunity.

It was too early to cross JMU off the list until they had finished their due diligence, and also too early before they found out whether they were really, truly, not likely to see any immediate CUSA or MAC invite.

As far as this news ... either the inside source has been told the truth, or someone has fed them a line of bull to keep the real story quiet. June will be here soon enough, and if JMU is not announced to be on its way to the Sunbelt by then, that is soon enough to cross them off the list.

If there was any possible way to botch a process, JMU has done it. Our process involved CARR, but that was just the beginning. We had a Feasibility Committee with faculty, staff, students, alumni, corporate, city leaders and former athlete membership do an open, above board process that involved public forums, surveys, listening tours, targeted meetings with at-stake and interested parties over a period of months. After the results were made public, the BOT voted to give our administration the authority to speak with athletic conferences. JMU's process was broken from the get-go, and as much as I wanted to see them a part of the SBC, I believed all along that they hadn't even decided if FBS was the right move or not. They have put their fans through the ringer and its shameful.

This latest "no" vote was more than just saying no to the Sun Belt. It was a decision to say no to I-A football, period. MAC and CUSA are not expanding and the SBC was/is JMU's only chance.

I believe that will upset the JMU fanbase more than anything. They might have still been split about which conference is the best for them, but the majority wanted I-A ball in the end. That door is now closed and JMU will remain in 1-aa (or whatever it becomes after the P5 and G5 split) for the foreseeable future.

It was emphasised JMU does not have an invite to CUSA or the MAC as neither conference will be expanding in the foreseeable future. This is likely JMU's last opportunity to make the FBS move for some time to come. There are obviously financial situations in play as President Alger has told JMU alumni groups he would pursue FBS if someone steps up and writes a 7 figure check. It is believed the SunBelt will now pursue UMass for football only and NMSU for all sports.

So am I to assume that JMU would have turned down CUSA and The MAC without that "7 figure check"? So if they had a "7 figure check" then JMU would join the SBC?

Benson has clearly stated one team and a travel partner for App State. So UMASS for football and NMSU for all sports does not get to the goal that Benson set.

I think I will wait for an official yes or no from JMU. If it is a no, then I would bet the house on Liberty.

Here is what Alger was up against from his faculty: [emphasis added]

Quote:Resolution in Support of Moving to FBS Football
T. Louwers

Whereas there are many positives associated with moving up a level in college football,
including raising University visibility on a national scale, increasing the University’s ability to
recruit out-of-state students within a new conference’s regional “foot print”, and reconnecting
with alumni who may have lost contact with the University, be it resolved that the Faculty Senate
supports (or doesn’t oppose) the Athletic Department’s proposed move to the FBS-level of
collegiate football as long as the move does not negatively affect the academic mission of the
University by increasing student fees to subsidize the reclassification. To demonstrate that this
would not be the case, the JMU Faculty Senate calls for the JMU Athletic Department/Duke
Club to solicit an increase in alumni and friend commitments totaling at least $12 million over a
five-year period prior to applying for reclassification

The above was put forth by the JMU Faculty Senate in November.
Additionally, The Harper Resolution and McGraw Proposal, both containing similar sentiments, are contained within the minutes.

JMU is out. Don't bet the house please on Liberty, I think they have majority of members open to their membership, but not enough. Benson has worked very hard to fulfill the promise to add an all-sports east coast member. UMASS, just like Idaho will not be a permanent add. There are teams that could meet the requirements that are not yet ready on the east coast. Adding UMASS evens the divisions out and gives schools time to develop. There are only 1-2 other FCS schools ready to make the jump today outside of the Dukies (that have decided they are not ready) and they all have footprint issues.

What the faculty says doesn't change directions. The faculty at UCA in Arkansas passed a resolution wanting the school to drop to Division II. That was never ever going to happen. All it did was get negative press for the school and probably recruiting.

Based on what I was told yes they would have turned down a CUSA or MAC invite. This is clearly NOT just about the SunBelt, but FBS football overall. All my info tells me JMU simply isn't ready financially to make the jump. And that's OK. People are jumping to all kinds of conclusions over this post. I don't think it is a situation where the administration is purposely ignoring their fans, it may be they are just unsure how to approach them about it. If you're betting the house on Liberty, you better have another place to crash lined up. It's my understanding they've got no shot.

I think that's pretty absurd. They are in a lot better shape than a lot of schools that have made the jump before them and had success.
