OT: Anyone watch Hockey?
I generally only follow the pros, but tiny Union College in Nevada, with 2100 students, and zero athletic scholarships just beat Minnesota and their 51K students, 16 NHL Draft Picks, and 18 scholarships to win the NCAA Championship.

True David vs Goliath type moment.

Union is in New York, not Nevada.

Hockey is regional like baseball so little national interest.
College baseball that is because it starts in the winter.
Almost all hockey programs make money and anyone has a shot at winning it all.

There were over 100 nationally televised hockey games this season and 150+ regional games for just 61 D1 teams. It has way more interest than baseball.

Love hockey can't understand why only 61 teams . The unfair winter start of baseball is ridiculous. No Northern school should play baseball before hockey.

Very cool story. Also, here's an interesting view from a couple of years ago, from a Union alum, that addresses the intermingling of athletics and academics that we often talk about in here:

In the North maybe. In the South, the only College Hockey games I witnessed were the couple games NBCSN aired and the postseason when ESPN picked it up.

Its a regional thing. Baseball has far more TV coverage down here.

I came here to shout "Let's Go Lightning!", but then realized this is about college hockey.

Never mind.

Still, Let's go, Lightning.

Playoffs start this week.

Y'know, I developed a definite dislike for this gentleman back in the Thrashers' heyday (and by that I mean the one year they made the playoffs):

I don't watch hockey very often, but HDTV has certainly improved the presentation.

Well, all I know is Miami Hockey was on National TV 7 times this year and we didn't even make the playoffs. Had we made the playoffs, every game also would have been on National TV.

So basically Miami Hockey alone has a better TV deal then the entire Sun Belt Football Conference. Go ahead and call it a niche sport I guess.

The 8 hockey teams in the NCHC have a 18-game National TV deal.
The 12 football team in the Sun Belt have a 8-game National TV deal.

Just sayin'

Part of a 30-minute documentary on national TV. Not bad exposure for a niche sport....

Hockey is one of the big four baseball top three.
College is a different story baseball is South whether that is Cali, Texas or the Southeast. Potentially baseball could be bigger or national except it starts in winter. Hockey is limited by the weather being mostly cold weather. A school like UND or Denver can make money on hockey and basketball with lower cost. Almost every hockey team makes money . I am not sure if football can say that.

Michigan St, Ohio St, and Notre Dame didn't make money in 2010, in fact lost a lot of it. But those three programs might be making a lot more today, as the Big Ten Hockey conference adds a lot of TV money and Notre Dame has a new hockey arena and gets a exclusive TV package with Hockey East. Minnesota used to get big pay from Fox Sports North: they might have been hurt.

Alabama-Huntsville should be doing much better now that they are in the WCHA. Their program was on life support before because they had nearly all away games and recruiting was difficult with no league.

Tonsil hockey on Cinemax is about it for me. I watch just enough highlights on ESPN to know enough for trivia night at local bars/pubs.

I love hockey but the pros and minor leagues play way to many regular games. I only follow the playoffs. I like the Black Hawks and Wings. IceGators of course in the SPHL.

I love hockey and work most of the Carolina Hurricanes games. I witnessed them raising and drinking from the cup in 2006. Nothing beats playoff hockey!
