RE: Commissioner Benson interviewed again at Ga. Southern baseball game (4/12)
Rumored candidates:
AL State 14,387 = Not being considered - that'd be worse than JSU.
JMU 21,011
MO ST 8,700
UTC 9,922 = Not being considered now - Future GREAT location - lack current support. 4 FBS teams/ nearly population nearly 2million more than Alabama.
Lamar 8,379 = Not being considered - I don't even know or care where they are.
Sam Houston 7,040 = Not being considered
Towson 8,473 = Not being considered
UMASS 15,830
Liberty 15,031
JMU the highest and JSU couldnt beat them for the bid anyway. The only other one higher is UMASS with a FBS schedule.

Other close comparable FBS schools:
UAB 10,548 = Not being considered
Middle 18,715 = Gone
WKU 18,334 = Gone

About the same as SB members

New member:
App St 24,894
GA So 14,828

JSU is inline with GA SO and behind App St to no one surprise but so is everyone in the SB minus ULL.

That attendance number is skewed from normal, reflecting a year of a Stadium under construction and perceived "nothing to play for".

Not counting playoff numbers, which always lower attendance figures, especially when you play at home the weekend of Thanksgiving = we average about 20k/game. Your numbers are still good and would rise probably being FBS - but you are not exactly on track with Georgia Southern.

GA population nearly twice that of Alabama with half the # of FBS programs and a LOT less of total D1 Programs (both FBS and FCS).

This board can be that way sometimes. The vocal minority often becomes the face of the program over the silent majority. The few represent the many. At least until the fallacy is exposed and people realize that fanbases are more than just a few extremely vocal fans.

JSUs numbers include a Thanksgiving playoff game.
Alabama doesnt have pro teams to contend with unless you count UAT and Auburn. Our numbers still show we have support especially in comparison to other FCS programs.

Troy, USA, and UAB are tough obstacles. That's why I don't see a CUSA future for JSU either. That limits your options considerably. Though USA got in with Troy, it's pushing for that 6th FBS team in the state that could be more of a roadblock for JSU.

We don't get coverage up there just like UAB and JSU get no coverage in the southern part of the state. The only teams that get statewide coverage are Alabama and Auburn.

Never lived in South Alabama but it would be surprised if JSU had any coverage other than games against team in the area or stories about players from the area.

CUSA would take USA over us for a Alabama team.

Personally, I would prefer a conference as close geographically as possible. TV will pay more for schools with good crowds before market potential, long term. Games are more fun with opposing crowds and Im more worried about my enjoyment than tv ratings.

if you believe Jsu isnt ready Eku is years behind in preparations for a move up.
so that puts us in the list.
utc has already said no for now.

My guess is liberty.

I have no idea if they will get in. But this is a good example of somebody reading the post of a VERY vocal minority of a conference's fans and drawing a conclusion that imhop - is far fetched. Given the footprint of the Sun Belt (Bible Belt) - I'd figure that most of the fans of this conference (even on this forum), do not despise Liberty. I think more people would object to Liberty's invite based on the lack of performance from their football program and perceived possible advantages from being a private school - than from their religious opinions. That doesn't mean that they despise LU, but might simply have other practical reasons for not wanting their sports programs in this Athletic conference. I only see a few "despising" LU, even on this board. Those same ones just say it over, and over and over. Like in most situations, many people avoid getting involved in the discussion and remain politically correct/neutral by not saying how they really feel about something. Again, based on our conference footprint, I'd guess that the majority of this conference's fans agree with most of what Liberty stands for rather than despise them.
Valid points in several areas. LU has failed on several occasions to make the playoffs and that will change. The LU basketball teams has been poor for quite some time even with lucky tournament wins last year and then lose a play in game. Once a new, high profile basketball coach is in place, they will likely make big strides when they can move up to FBS and out of the weak Big South.

LU has a huge upside being a controversial program with a lightning rod identity. Even though I attend games and support the athletics of the school, I shudder a times from their past actions. Things have improved since Falwell Sr. passed and Jr. is now in charge. With the facilities, current $500 million campus expansion, their media (checkout their their radio and TV broadcast), and desire to excel, they could be the team courted for bigger conference venues in the future. Take them now SB. The benefits will greatly outweigh the negatives and the teams and conference will reap many more advantages than disadvantages. Me, I just enjoy college athletics and could care less about the morals and ethics as long as it's a good product on the field.

04-cheers

Hey, that's the plan. Then more people will love us, we'll get on TV more and as a result we'll feel more secure about ourselves.

It's how this FBS thing works.
