Missouri State makes the most sense and has the largest potential. If they weren't buried in the SW corner of Missouri (travel-wise), then I'd love to see them in the MAC. In my eyes, MO State is pretty comparable to JMU. MO State has better basketball, JMU has better football - both have room to grow and plenty of potential. JMU holds a slight edge, but Mo State would be fully committed in for the long haul where JMU will always be looking for the mythical eastern conference.

You need to check your vision. It is not even close:

1. JMU has a $34 million athletic budget. Missouri State is at $14 million.
2. Missouri State has not been to the FCS playoffs since 1990. JMU has been there 9 times in that period, winning the national championship in 2004.
3. JMU had an average football attendance of 21,011 per game last season. Missouri State averaged 8,700.
4. JMU has an FBS ready football facility that seats 25,000. Missouri State has an older facility that seats 16,600 and is not FBS ready.
5. JMU is ranked in Forbes Best Colleges at #168. Missouri State is ranked at #526. That is important to the Presidents.

I could add that the population growth and the FBS talent favors the state of Virginia and JMU. If you are in an olympic sports league, then maybe Missouri State is the better option. If your in an FBS league, Missouri State is not close to being ready. They are a mediocre FCS program that lacks the money to move up. That is not the kind of program the SBC needs.

athletic budgets aren't a straight comparison as they are calculated differently.

older facility? its under construction.

you are adding us for our basketball, not for our football and our program is miles ahead of any hoops program in the SBC. Our arena destroys yours, our history destroys yours, and our attendance destroys yours(we just had what we considered a bad year for attendance and its still triple your schools.
keep hating.

Your basketball program is 47-51 over the past three seasons. How is that "miles ahead of any hoops program in the SBC"? You have an inflated opinion of your basketball program based on playing in the MVC. You lose to a bad Loyola team on the road by 32 and beat a bad Liberty team by 2 at home and I am supposed to believe you guys would be the best hoops program in the SBC?

Okay, and the last 3 years are the worst in our history (Literally). So, you'd rather NOT accept a top 20-winningest program in the HISTORY of college basketball just because the last 3 years have sucked??

Yeah, I guess you're right, this stadium really doesn't belong side by side with yours.

RE: Reports out of missouri saying JMU and MSU recieved invite
Interesting Info?

"According to the State of Virginia 2012:
16% of JMU's tuition and fees were allocated to athletics.
Athletics generated less than 26% of the actual revenue needed to cover expenses.

JMU has an endowment on the low side for a university of it's size and geographic location; 66.978 million.

Most of JMU's older alumni are women, who historically are not big athletic donors.

JMU is located in an extremely small population area, which probably precludes a large quantity of corporate donations.

JMU's location is also problematic when it comes to event attendance from locals who otherwise have no connection to the university."

JMU has lost over 8% per year in football attendance since 2011.

While none of the above issues are unique to JMU nor insurmountable, I believe that the "bean counters", and faculty and staff are very concerned about the efficacy of FBS as it relates to money.

A possible example of JMU's financial anxiety:
The proposed new JMU convo, which was approved for bonds by the Virginia legislature in 2011. This has not been acted upon, and is rapidly approaching a time when the $88 million is no longer an accurate number, which could cause the legislative process to have to be revisited.
Indeed, it has been reported that JMU is now looking for private donations for the convo instead.

Please point to any post where a Bobcat has even TRIED to compare your basketball program to ours.

You want to argue that your basketball isn't as bad as he believes? Go for it. I agree with you.

But making up an argument that was never brought up is just foolish.

So a school that was at one time called the Shenandoah State Normal School for Women has a problem finding older/wealthier athletic boosters. I thought retired school marms spent a lot of money on football teams.

The statement you posted compared your basketball to the conference's basketball. Hardly a comparison to bobcat basketball.

RE: Reports out of missouri saying JMU and MSU recieved invite
This thread is a hoot. TXST using JMU to diss MoSt and Liberty jumping in to diss JMU with Lamar joining in at the end.

Just so y'all know, we are the Sun Belt. Everyone who joins, or is a member or has been a member, has disadvantages of one sort or another. You diss JMU's small endowment but it won't be the smallest in the Belt if they join. You diss MoSt's small stadium but WKU has a pretty small stadium and its not killing them. You diss MoSt attendance but they'll do a damn sight better than FIU was doing there for a while. Probably the program with the most disadvantages is ULM and yet they beat a ranked Arkansas, beat Alabama, beat Wake Forest, and gave Auburn all they wanted. Seriously, we heard about Georgia Southern's budget all last year and how they weren't ready but they beat $&*#&@*$*# Florida.

We're going to invite someone. Whoever it is will ultimately do fine despite a host of disadvantages.

No mention of Liberty. But he said we will have a 12th team in 2015. Whatever that means.

If nothing else, it confirms the conference won't stand pat. Either JMU accepts an invitation, or there will be an invitation to a fallback school. None of the fallback choices is ideal so the least objectionable will get the offer.

If JMU doesn't accept and the other schools are the " least objectionable", then maybe UMASS has a chance as FB only since they have already moved up and have no transitioning period. NMS then gets the all sports invite as opposed to FB only and the SB gets a Championship game. The UMASS choice gives the FCS schools time to develop, gives UMASS a home until the AAC comes calling, and everyone is satisfied for another 4-6 years until realignment rears its ugly greedy head again.

Idaho (fixed crossover)
Appalachian State

Georgia State
@Troy
South Alabama
@Missouri State

The home/away designations swap the next year, but would essentially be only for two years if the plan is to expel Idaho and UMass after the 2017 season.

In 2018, the worst case is both schools are independent, but they can play each other the first week of December.

Once you have both in the conference why would you expel them a year later. They are either both in for the long haul or out. If UMASS doesn't have a conference home after 2015 then they may as well go independent right out of the gate for a few years until they iron things out or get the AAC invite they desire in the long run. They can probably get a 8 games between the MAC, AAC, Army, and BYU to go along with the future OOC schedules they already have planned out through 2016 and 2017. The MAC might even give UMASS 8 games a year non conference as they fill the voids left from UMASS as a member and wean those games down over a period of years.

Is it absolutely confirmed that JMU has an invitation?

As far as I know, Benson only mentioned JMU by name that one time, way back in October of 2013,
Liberty has already declared their desire to go FBS, they’re just waiting for the invitation. As has Jacksonville State and Alabama State have expressed their desire. James Madison has gone through that, they expect after the first of the year they will reach a decision whether to make the move to FBS. If they do, the question is what conference will they align with. We certainly would be interested to have that conversation. But it’s several months off. And the earliest anything could happen would be for 2015.

Does JMU even want to go FBS?
The only facts from JMU are the very general Carr Report, a response to an FBS question a month or so ago in which JMU AD Bourne replied that there is "no invitation", and the somewhat puzzling statement president Alger made to the JMU faculty senate in March of this year; “When we think about different conferences, we’re not talking about the SEC or the Big 10 or the so called ‘power conferences’ that have been getting a lot of publicity recently,” Alger said. “But the options that we’re talking about at the FBS level they’re really more modest conferences — they really look an awfully lot like where we already are.”

Even IF JMU wants to move up (and I lean toward that it doesn't, because of previously mentioned financial concerns), are you sure that the western presidents are going to vote yes to ANY eastern add?

There is a lot of speculation here seemingly presented as fact.
04-cheers

Hey, I'm not the one with the mis-naming problem.

JMU needs to realize that in order to get to FBS the Sunbelt is the only option. Whether or not they like the schools academically, having a seat at the FBS table will make them a better candidate for any expansion by the AAC or MAC that they so desire. Once they are fully FBS then it is a much easier transition to move to a different conference.

App did the same thing last year. When it comes down to deadline time I feel JMU is smart enough to see the writing on the CAA or FBS wall.
