No mention of Liberty. But he said we will have a 12th team in 2015. Whatever that means.

If nothing else, it confirms the conference won't stand pat. Either JMU accepts an invitation, or there will be an invitation to a fallback school. None of the fallback choices is ideal so the least objectionable will get the offer.

Missouri State makes the most sense and has the largest potential. If they weren't buried in the SW corner of Missouri (travel-wise), then I'd love to see them in the MAC. In my eyes, MO State is pretty comparable to JMU. MO State has better basketball, JMU has better football - both have room to grow and plenty of potential. JMU holds a slight edge, but Mo State would be fully committed in for the long haul where JMU will always be looking for the mythical eastern conference.

You need to check your vision. It is not even close:

1. JMU has a $34 million athletic budget. Missouri State is at $14 million.
2. Missouri State has not been to the FCS playoffs since 1990. JMU has been there 9 times in that period, winning the national championship in 2004.
3. JMU had an average football attendance of 21,011 per game last season. Missouri State averaged 8,700.
4. JMU has an FBS ready football facility that seats 25,000. Missouri State has an older facility that seats 16,600 and is not FBS ready.
5. JMU is ranked in Forbes Best Colleges at #168. Missouri State is ranked at #526. That is important to the Presidents.

I could add that the population growth and the FBS talent favors the state of Virginia and JMU. If you are in an olympic sports league, then maybe Missouri State is the better option. If your in an FBS league, Missouri State is not close to being ready. They are a mediocre FCS program that lacks the money to move up. That is not the kind of program the SBC needs.

athletic budgets aren't a straight comparison as they are calculated differently.

The way state of Virginia makes athletic departments report budgets is that the schools have to report every little penny that could be associated with athletics. Madison, ODU fans have said this for years.

Missouri state has competition from Missouri if it moves to FBS, while a large name in FBS that's the only real competition for interest in Missouri on Saturday... In Virginia there is a lot more competition. Same thing for app we have more competition only good news for us is 1 most/all the real competition is on the eastern side of the state, 2 most/all competition is about basketball more then football, in terms of fan base potential JMU has less population to recruit for new fans.

Yes and no. The neighboring border states have fairly large fan bases in the state, especially Kansas, Illinois, K-State, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Yea, but I know Missouri to an extent and they are very big homers, I'm sure there will be defections and some root for others because they don't like Missouri

No real incorrect information in your post, but lets not forget that Missouri has a much lower population than VA.

Also - there is no SEC Football program to compete with in VA.

One big thing I see is that even with the supposed advantages of MSU in their state that you are talking about, even Liberty doubles their numbers in football attendance! JMU imop - is the Major program for us to get here hands down.

These last 10-15 years have been the W O R S T athletically for MSU. It's no wonder our numbers are low. But with the insane money we are pumping into facilities, I don't doubt that we will get better.

But, keep hating.

Why not wait to see if Missouri State reaches their potential? They aren't going anywhere.

The "insane money" you speak of is money from the B.E.A.R. fee that was passed by the students. That is the additional fee of $50 per semester per student to fund improvements in the athletic facilities. That is not getting you FBS ready.

The state of Missouri like many other states is not increasing funding to universities. You are not going to be able to get additional funding from the state to move up to FBS. You are going to need rich donors who feel that spending their money on an FBS move to the Sun Belt is money well spent. Good luck with that.

I don't hate MSU, I just don't believe there is a stealth FBS movement campaign coming from the President's office. I believe your President is working hard to find funding for campus improvements. I just don't believe FBS football is one of those campus improvements for him.

Strangely reminiscent of how many on our board were complaining about TXST, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, and UTSA a couple of years ago.

If JMU and MSU both accept and push the SBC to 13 in football, could UMass be #14, at least temporarily? This could be the Minutemen's conference schedule:

Idaho (fixed crossover)
Appalachian State
@James Madison
@Georgia Southern
Georgia State
@Troy
South Alabama
@Missouri State

The home/away designations swap the next year, but would essentially be only for two years if the plan is to expel Idaho and UMass after the 2017 season.

In 2018, the worst case is both schools are independent, but they can play each other the first week of December.

Texas State didn't even have a good basketball or football program when they made the move.

Your basketball program is 47-51 over the past three seasons. How is that "miles ahead of any hoops program in the SBC"? You have an inflated opinion of your basketball program based on playing in the MVC. You lose to a bad Loyola team on the road by 32 and beat a bad Liberty team by 2 at home and I am supposed to believe you guys would be the best hoops program in the SBC?
