I wouldn't gage that most fans are content with 11 members. We aren't desperate but all candidates mentioned bring something to the table for the conference. Yes, even Liberty.

I wouldn't call the MAC the weakest of the G5. Along with MWC they are the only geographically sensible leagues out there. They clearly have programs that produce success.

The only "weakness" I perceive is that it seems apparent there are a number of programs that aren't putting a great deal of effort into developing a university/fan athletic culture and the commitment to cost-containment now has them in a position where a lot of people who would be likely coaching candidates are in jobs that would require giving up a lot of pay to accept, a situation that wasn't true a few years ago.

If nothing else, it confirms the conference won't stand pat. Either JMU accepts an invitation, or there will be an invitation to a fallback school. None of the fallback choices is ideal so the least objectionable will get the offer.

Missouri State makes the most sense and has the largest potential. If they weren't buried in the SW corner of Missouri (travel-wise), then I'd love to see them in the MAC. In my eyes, MO State is pretty comparable to JMU. MO State has better basketball, JMU has better football - both have room to grow and plenty of potential. JMU holds a slight edge, but Mo State would be fully committed in for the long haul where JMU will always be looking for the mythical eastern conference.

I don't rule it out, but until I see some huge benefit for having one I'm going to remain very skeptical.

Benson wanting a special event to oversee isn't enough for me.

I'd guess the SBC could expect to see ESPN (or whomever) to pay between $250,000 - $500,000 for the TV rights for the SBC Football Championship game.

$20,000 - $40,000 per school. Not a ton, but it is something and more importantly Benson mentioned how that is one more big exposure opportunity for the conference that adds value. In addition, it seems as though Appalachian State might have been promised an eastern travel partner when they joined based on how much Benson stresses it.

Benson did say the conference was working to add a 12th FB playing school. He repeated the same thing I have heard many times-- Sun Belt needs a team in the East to be travel partner for App. St. and that it will help not just football but will help in all sports to have a 12th eastern member. I don't recall him mentioning any school by name but I do think he said Sun Belt would add a school by June 1.

At various times he has mentioned Liberty.
In one interview in 2013 someone mentioned JMU to him and he said something like "we would be interested to have that discussion".

Ahhh I miss those days where our fans dreamed up magical scenarios that were never going to happen...now it's all anger, frustration and MAC/Sun Belt fans arguing over who has the best conference...good times?

A couple of people have tweeted about Missouri State, but I fail to find a single real news story out of Missouri that indicates it's close to happening? You would think their local media would be picking up on it if were true.

The one strength that they seem to have is the tight foot print you mention. Low travel cost is certainly valuable and on that front I guess they are strong.

But - poor fan attendance in football and poor performance or commitment to strong athletics is a major problem. And in that part of the country, I don't think football is what it is further south. (A Religion). Again - I don't know anything about their basketball, or ours for that matter. But I know here, it is a distant second for many of our fans.

When calling them weak - I'm speaking directly to their product in Football. Both on the field and in the stands.

For JMU football = SBC > MAC. All other g5 > MAC.

As a fall back from JMU for the Belt: IMHOP:
(Football being the driver) Liberty>MSU. Especially since we need an East member.
But I'm probably in the minority, and there is a good chance we take both.

Maybe even both AND JMU?

Their board granted their President authority in all matters related to conference membership at their last board meeting. That has been a pretty reliable signal of conference switch during recent rounds of realignment.

On my Google searches this is the only real news source I could find? Everything else is just a some bloggers opinion.

http://www.wearecentralpa.com/story/d/st...WUBPr7l6RQ

"FCS programs Jacksonville State, Alabama State, Eastern Kentucky, Missouri State and Sam Houston State have been bandied about as other possibilities for the Sun Belt, but really the favorites (JMU and Liberty) have been there all along."

I think Missouri State would be added regardless of what happens in the east. App State would still need a travel partner and I doubt the eastern schools would vote in Missouri State if they weren't promised another school in the east. If JMU does not accept an invite, I'm pretty sure that will mean Liberty gets the nod and they won't turn it down. If Liberty wants in the Sun Belt, they aren't competing against MSU.

Missouri State refuses to comment on anything concerning FBS and realignment. Its just how they work. When they do end up moving to FBS, it will be spur of the moment without a single study done.

Though if you want proof they are up to something. The fact their president was seen at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament should tell you they are at least considering leaving the Valley.

Missouri State simply depends on whether they want to join. Liberty strictly depends on whether JMU says no, and enough Presidents are willing to vote for the Flames.

You need to check your vision. It is not even close:

1. JMU has a $34 million athletic budget. Missouri State is at $14 million.
2. Missouri State has not been to the FCS playoffs since 1990. JMU has been there 9 times in that period, winning the national championship in 2004.
3. JMU had an average football attendance of 21,011 per game last season. Missouri State averaged 8,700.
4. JMU has an FBS ready football facility that seats 25,000. Missouri State has an older facility that seats 16,600 and is not FBS ready.
5. JMU is ranked in Forbes Best Colleges at #168. Missouri State is ranked at #526. That is important to the Presidents.

I could add that the population growth and the FBS talent favors the state of Virginia and JMU. If you are in an olympic sports league, then maybe Missouri State is the better option. If your in an FBS league, Missouri State is not close to being ready. They are a mediocre FCS program that lacks the money to move up. That is not the kind of program the SBC needs.

Academics is not a big deal in this. None of our schools have high enough academic numbers that we can sneeze at someone who doesn't. This is all about increasing our profile. Both JMU and Missouri State do that. Liberty might...it would depend how they develop.

Yeah we would love JMU to just go ahead and join, but if they say no again, we have to move on. We're not adding Mo State based off what they've done but for their potential. I hate to use this example but it's like adding Georgia State. Basketball school with potential to be more based on its location and name profile.

No mention of Liberty. But he said we will have a 12th team in 2015. Whatever that means.

I would pick JMU over us as well, but you don't add us for right now, you add us for our potential.

These last 10-15 years have been the W O R S T athletically for MSU. It's no wonder our numbers are low. But with the insane money we are pumping into facilities, I don't doubt that we will get better.

But, keep hating.
