Quote:Boosters made a call to JMU President not happy.

Faculty was happy when they were going to pass on the SBC.
The President understands how much it's gonna cost to send the Softball team to Louisiana, and isn't sure the resources are there.

A majority of schools would take us (LU) in SBC but not a Super Majority with JMU on the table. A month ago we (LU) were golden and the Ivory Tower types were pleased in Harrisonburg.

But in this case money may talk and book smarts may walk.

That's the way I am reading this as well. JMU doesn't really want SBC, but fan backlash of they stay FCS Would be immense.

If JMU is not involved, Liberty can probably get the 9 votes needed to join, but as long as JMU is on the table, there is little chance that 9 SBC schools would voluntarily take Liberty.

Wait, Patch said flat out Liberty didn't have the votes. Others have said there is no way LU gets the votes. So, this can't be right. This is why I say LU is still in it, because I think there is a good chance JMU says no. It's all still open.

And I actually believe Liberty is much closer today than they were because they willingly and totally want to be in the SBC. Still don't get why they would prefer a school that would only take them in a gun to the head situation.

Thing with Liberty is we can only go on actions.

We know the Liberty President visited several SBC schools the past couple weeks. One would think that would be unnecessary if Liberty had the 9 votes.

On the other hand, we also know the SBC is at least thinking about Liberty, and my guess is that we would not actually be having reasonable negotiations with Liberty if they still had zero votes like they did this time last year.

My guess is you have a vote tally somewhere in between. Not 9...but close enough to 9 that you stand a chance to sway enough people to get a spot.

Our guesses are similar, but don't tell the ax grinders.

I think many people are thinking that JMU will only come to the SBC When forced, when the reality is JMU probably doesn't have a lot of faculty support for FBS. Faculty at schools can be very strange creatures that can sometimes unintentionally undermine their own employer. (See Liberty Law Professor)

Heck, its everywhere. A couple of years ago, UCA's faculty actually voted in a faculty senate meeting to drop the Bears to D2. The Senate had no actual power over the issue, and they were generally laughed at...but they felt they needed to make their opinion known...so they did. And UCA got negative press for it, despite the fact there was no chance they would ever go back to D2.

Technically in the camp with 46% of posters on this board that found LU least desirable. 2 to 1 margin over UMASS..3 to 1 margin over EKU, 5 to1 margin over JMU and 12 to 1 margin over Mizz St.

It's astounding really.

JMU 12 8.89%
Missouri State 5 3.70%
Umass 34 25.19%
Liberty* 63 46.67%
EKU 21 15.56%
Total 135 votes 100%

I don't think 135 votes on one thread is a enough data to determine a trend across an entire conference.

I would love to have a much larger sample, but alas this is the largest congregation of sunbelt fans in one spot on the net. BTW liked you last post about stepping back and looking at the issues as opposed to beating the same horse.

It's not hard to get those results when you have a handful of posters constantly taking every jab possible at LU. Every election is basically won by who can be the most negative. There's some on here that win hands down.

Ever step back and take a look at the mirror and ask yourself why so many take so many jabs? Or are you the type that just assumes there must be something wrong with everyone else?

Pros:
You guys have a bunch of money/facilities and fit the footprint for an East travel partner. TV station

Cons:
There are no playoff appearances in Football. Outside of Curry's time your basketball is suspect. Your online program is well documented to be questioned by many(got that from your own fan on flamefans.com). Your a private school trying to join up with 11 publics. Jerry Sr. the founder of the University is one of the most controversial public figure of the last few decades. Tailgating wont be allowed by visiting teams. Don't bring a good media market(Roanoke is VT territory).

Are you a fit somewhere? Maybe one day with more like minded Schools and when you've accomplished more athletically. Most Sunbelt alums outside of App and GS hadn't even heard of LU before rumors started leaking. Most around the county outside of the southeast think of it as a Devry or Phoenix as you have eerily similar commercials online and on TV. So a bit of image rehab in that department is probably necessary as well.

And if you go back, remember that the faculty at AState went to the Board of Trustees demanding football be dropped back when Col Klink was on the Board and cited the amount of money that would be saved and he countered by asking if they had factored in the million plus in contract penalties for failing to play contracted games, the impact of potentially needing to seek another league, the expectation of fans that any "savings" be expended to improve other sports. They gave up and sulked away.

Apps faculty was similarly not happy with the move. We shunned the SBC thinking we were CUSA bound and now most fans I know of are very happy to be here. Especially after signing South Miss to a home and home.

I agree. Luckily we beat them and won 3 NC's which helped put us on the map. Otherwise I doubt we would be in the SBC today. GS has 6 NC's and beat Florida. We both had to accomplish a bunch to get here.

Ah, we've been there. One of our professors even had a piece published in Slate (or HuffPo) claiming that sexual assaults on campus will increase with a move to FBS...I literally can't make this up.

Let's also not pretend that many people who root for a BCS team watch the G5 either.

I would bet the men of Troy know us. Also any team in Alabama probably saw us almost beat Auburn. Also hung tough with LSU. Much more of a household name than a smaller private school with no marquee wins or NC's in major sports. Arkansas State probably had no clue as we are far apart and we never played the Razorbacks in recent history.

Troy might...but Troy grads don't represent the majority of SBC grads. At least I would hope they don't.

Many of the JMU posters on the board were around for a previous school president who took us from college to university, and oversaw our move from no football up to FCS. That president had a reputation for making things happen, either through glad-handing or sheer force of will; it didn't matter who didn't like it, if he thought it was best for the school, it happened. For whatever reason, maybe because JMU's simply too big now for that to work, our new president isn't taking the same approach to trying to get us to FBS. Some see that as a failure of leadership, but I'm of the mind that since a university president can be in the position for a decade or more, they must maintain excellent relationships with the faculty, and currently that means a complicated listening and discussion process. If it looks like we're dragging our feet, it might be that because for reasons of internal politics we simply have to, in order for the final decision to have the least chance of spoiling that relationship.

One poster basically said accept us in football only and let us see after 2-3 years if you're good enough for all of our sports. The SB is sometimes referred to as the Slum belt. This post has nothing to do with Liberty, but all you JMU lovers are getting exactly what you deserve by clamoring for them to join. JMU is a fine school, but they have the attitude of Alabama fans in football with the trophy case of Ga. State.

Like you said, JMU is a fine school. I don't view them as superior to any other Sun Belt school but I do view them as much more of an asset to the conference than Liberty, EKU, Lamar, etc. Who cares what a bunch of message board posters say...it's about the greater good! JMU will improve that.

To me the following league rivals any G5 conference:

WEST:

- Arkansas State

- Louisiana

- Missouri State

- New Mexico State

- Texas State

- ULM

EAST:

- Appalachian State

- Georgia Southern

- Georgia State

- James Madison

- South Alabama

- Troy

I like this lineup a lot, and think it can far surpass the MAC and CUSA, but I understand the occasional bitterness from some of the ULL folks when you consider over half this possible league was FCS four years ago.

I can as well, but to quote Al Davis "Just win, baby!" If the recent move ups win and hold their own, it really isn't going to matter. You think the Big East was upset when South Florida was ranked #2 only a few short years after they got a team?

Winning talks...tradition walks.

That's sort of where ASU is now. Our administration in place has been very good about pushing their ideas of where we should be both athletically and academically through without much pushback.

I remember the old days though when the idea or concept that we could do anything like this athletically was laughable.

From a JMU perspective, I would welcome this ASAP. I think the SBC has a lot of flavor and some quality programs.

I don't think it matters. If done correctly, an FCS moveup can be almosst immediately competitive. ULL and the rest of us got our butts kicked by Troy for several years following their move to FBS. At stAte, we made bad decisions and took a decade to figure it out after moving back up to FBS.

Put the resources into it, hire the right people and schedule well and most of the recent FCS move ups can be successful.

JMU GS and APP have wins over VT Florida and Michigan and a combined 10 NC's in football. I understand GSU hasn't accomplished much in football yet but Bball is strong and they get a little piece of that ATL market for us. Can't speak to the others as I don't know them too much.

And 4 years ago they went 3-9 in football. They should be the first to tell you how quickly things can turn around. There is hope! 04-cheers
