RE: GSU eyes campus expansion with Turner Field
GSU doesn't need all of the Turner field property. They only need a big piece of it to suit us find. Buying all of it would be irresponsible, in my opinion.

It is am enormous piece of land when you consider that the it is twice the size of our existing campus or that the average intown single family housing lot is likely 1/8 of an acre. This is why the city is thinking GSU. Edgewood Retail District is 40 acres and that is with several big box suburban style retailers. There is plenty of space at the Ted to keep the stadium, move Panthersville downtown add classrooms/dorms and still still add plenty of residential and retail. GSU will generate the daily foot traffic but the parcel is too big and risky for any one entity to take a shot at alone. Besides the city also has the 500 acre Ft McPherson property to worry about now as well .

Along with that, there are two new private dorms that are considered off campus housing (as they aren't owned by the school), meaning that the amount of students actually living on campus is actually a lot higher than the 4000 in official GSU dorms. It's already probably closer to 7 or 8k.

I'm sorry. I can't take you seriously. It sounds like you are implying the street car was a good idea.
Do you live inside the city of Atlanta? One of the biggest criticism about MARTA rail has always been that "it doesnt go where I need to go". The light rail and beltline interconnecting neighborhoods begins to resolve that.
.
Thanks for playing

Actually, yes I do and work downtown in a building which the streetcar will go right past, which is why I think the street car is a waste of money. They should have used that money to expand Marta, not tear up downtown to transport tourists from Centennial to the gettho.

It goes from Centennial to the MLK Center. Its Phase I and has a lot of potential along with the Beltline to tie the city together.

And John Portman disagrees with you...

Like I said I will defend the ATL to no end with my AL buddies who try describe ATL as some homogeneous crime ridden area. As some or close to half of the ATL will be nicer than the Birmingham city limits will ever see in our lifetimes but crime stats are what they are. SOME areas of the ATL like the areas around GSU and Georgia Ave are the main reason the ATL is a top ten crime city. It is what it is. Again, the city leadership failed miserably in using the stadium to make the area safe and nice. If your are going to ask folks from the northern burbs to take make that trip and spend money in your city at least make the area decent to grab a bite or a beer. Also though I am usually against multi purpose stadiums I think it would make sense for GSU to consider it, due to the high land costs. Baseball is never going to get off the ground playing in Panthersville.

BTW Bham and or AL folks I have invested in real estate and am good friends with appraisers over there so I am not doing what my friends do in forming an opinion about the ATL. I know the difference in Helena and Hoover and Trussville and Centerpoint.

Just quit. Atlanta is comparable to other cities of its size. Yes, it has more crime than Statesboro, but what did you expect? 33,000 students actively choose to go to GSU and they come and go every day with no incident. Georgia State and downtown aren't the problem areas, Bankhead and English Ave are, and they're closer to Tech, not State, but you don't have a problem with Tech so you try to make it seem like GSU is the problem area. As for Turner Field, it's not like the city decided to stick a stadium in the middle of a bad area, they built a stadium and guess what, opportunistic thieves do what they do around the world; prey on tourists and people visiting. And guess what'll happen when the Braves no longer play at Turner Field; they wont bother thieving there, they'll go to other places.

To say GSU is in the middle of the ghetto isn't just ignorant, it shows your agenda, which is basically trying to bash GSU because who knows, you feel inadequate with your university i guess.

Ummm crime rates are calculated so population sizes are not a factor..hence one in X chance of being stabbed in the neck etc. Also crime maps are a useful tool the high crime areas are in that area of the city. Again it is not the amount of crime necessarily it is HOW LIKELY you are to be a victim. This is how you can compare ATL with NYC who has a lot more people. Case in point in LA your were no where close to being a victim of violent crime in 2012 with nearly 3M more people within its city limits. I also never said GT was safe I actually said that area is not great either but put words in my mouth if it makes you feel better. There are crime city rankings and the ATL is top ten bottom line not good, spin it any way you want. Is it Kabul no, but it is not safe compared to the vast majority of large cities end of story. If you got a problem with that ***** to the FBI and other services for ranking and compiling crime stats. I have no problem with GS it is a traditional college campus. It's a relatively young university with a that has seen more growth and academic improvement in the last two +/- decades than it has in its entire history. I don't believe we have lost ground to anybody or very few since the growth spurt started and even past many schools SAT scores that would have been thought not possible just a decade or so ago.

Is that for me or for the people that rank ATL crime? The third ranked most dangerous neighborhood in the entire country in the same area of your campus and Turner Field and still cant come up with anything but "I never got stabbed" defense. 07-coffee3

When should we expect the ATL to make this list? 03-lmfao

For the conference rep I do hope you improve. Also, I believe that a competitive instate rivalry makes and pushes your program to get better. So killing a struggling program every year in a rented stadium is not going to do much for either program.

Moving on.

Couple that with the fact student fees are tops in the state and I also understand Ga State has the most bonds in the state as well, money is and will be tight.

Also, comparing College Town at FSU to what you guys need I am not sure is a fair comparison. FSU has 40k+ students that are mostly living on or around campus. Yes Ga State has 30k+ students but the majority of these are commuters if I am not mistaken. I just don't see the demand for a college town type atmosphere at Ga State.

LOL. Just because Ga Southern is broke doesn't mean every other state school is broke. If there's mutual interest, Ga State will get it done.

LOL we've invested over $26 million in our athletics program since the last time you finished over .500 and you can't afford to open the doors of your home stadium for a spring game. You've used $1 million from a donor that was supposed to go to your weight room to be able to afford moving to the SBC and have yet to raise the money to replace it even with ANOTHER donation toward the weight room. You've got athletics funding issues, no doubt.

Note: That statement has nothing to do with the funding you get on the other side of things of academics (you guys are doing really well there). The only way you'd get state funding for Turner Field is to put dorms or academic support type facilities there. Anything that is purely for athletics will require 100% funding.

I can't imagine the school NOT putting some dorms and classrooms in there. Lots of room to work with.

Would seem to be a natural. Even classrooms in the stadiums.

This is how Florida State renovated Doak Campbell.

We can go in circles for years on this. So lets see, Atlanta has some 500k people and a metro area of 5.5k. The crime stats you state are for the city limits. Do criminals respect city boundaries? Its estimated daily that the population of the city of Atlanta climbs from 500k to about 2M. I wonder if criminals from the 20 county metro area are attracted to the city like a moth to a flame? Naw, couldn't be. I am not even sure what your point is anymore than to crap on the hand that feeds this state. I am not sure you're going to convince anyone that overall Atlanta is more dangerous than NYC, Chicago, Detroit or Los Angeles. And I really dont know what any of this has to do with Turner Field. Is Turner Field in an economically depressed area? Yes. That is why they put it there instead of a residential part of Dunwoody or Alpharetta. No opposition with any power to stop them.

Like I said, Mayor was there last fall and allegedly said, "Something like this might work for GSU". It actually would be a boon for the area and coupled with residential condos and apartments plus retail would create daily foot traffic.
