Play in an existing stadium such as Panthersville, build or expand an existing stadium or play in the Dome. The was the most cost effective of three. You go with the best option you have available. Now an option is being presented that you did not have before. Given that they are imploding our current home and that we will be third banana in the new Dome I think you have to seriously say why NOT the Ted? There are also a significant amount of students and alumni in the immediate area so that you have a chance to create something akin to the Home Park neighborhood at GT. Also given Becker's past behavior, if you read the tea leaves, there is no way he comes out publicly saying anything about the property unless he is holding some cards and has a serious interest in pursuing part of the property. Zero chance.

Does Georgia permit state universities to use imminent domain? That would be a real chiller on doing anything else with the property because of they want to sell it to a private developer and GaSt turns around and condemns it, I would think it would very hard for the developer to prove the value is higher than what they purchased the property for.

Property is owned by the city.

City wants GSU involvement.

It would seem awful expensive to maintain such a large facility. Then if any modifications were made to decrease the size, that would probably be very expensive as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Becker is just showing some interest to appease the masses where he can at least say he looked into it. I would think it would be difficult for Becker to undertake such a massive project when there has been very little alumni support/interest in the football program. The alternative is writing a rent check in a brand new billion dollar state of the art stadium. That seems like a much more practical option.

How is it any different than maintaining any on campus stadium? Plus like I said, he would not open Pandora's box and mention the football team if there was not an interest. What follows is negotiation.

I just want thank Georgia Southern for making this possible

It would fit what seems to be Kasim Reed's overall vision for Atlanta seems to be. Whether you like him or not, you can sort of see an outline of plan for the future of Atlanta. The new stadium, the Gulch, the Beltline, the new light railway, Ponce City Market, selling Underground Atlanta, College Football HOF, Civil Rights Museum. He definitely has a long-term vision for making Atlanta an attractive city nationally and internationally. Georgia St taking over Turner Field and turning it into something interesting fits that broader vision.

If you are ucf with 40k fans footing the bill then Turner might be an option, but the demand just isn't there at this point for GaSt to justify such a massive stadium and the maintenance costs that come with it. You should be doing cartwheels you will get to play in a new billion dollar stadium. Sure it is way too big and makes the crowd look smaller than it is, but the same would happen at turner with the empty huge upper decks.

Just my opinion looking at it from Becker's perspective. I just don't see it happening. For what it's worth, Ga Southern couldn't afford the cost to maintain it if a similar option was available.

Turner seats a shade under 50k. I would expect either demolition and start over or a demolition of much of it. Because of the baseball refit, not sure how much of it is worth keeping.

The real kicker is how much land is available beyond what is needed for a football stadium in the 25k to 35k seat range. Development of that could potentially fund the demo and build or a good piece of it.

Being that it was originally built as an Olympic stadium for the '96 games I'm sure it could be reverse engineered. Hard to imagine it in any other orientation since the conversion. It's certainly a MLB venue, and a nice one at that. Now if this were old Fulton Co. Stadium that was round like RFK, y'all would be set.
I'm all for it, GSU needs to play football outside. Get dirty Panthers !

Demolition of the whole thing including suites? And rebuild from scratch? LOL. I doubt that. All they did was take down 1/3 of the seating and upper deck to reduce to from 85k to 50k. Can absolutely be re-refitted again for football with an open end towards the downtown skyline. The big win here is the stadium already exists.

As I said, if it was not seriously on the table he would have declined the interview and politely through channels said not interested. His interview has ended up being a story all over town in various newspapers, TV and radio. His media folks know this.So now the interest has been stated. What follows ins negotiation.

They may actually draw more in on that side of the connector, what Ga State needs is some band wagon jumpers to go with all those students that don't show up in huge numbers. Make State their hometown school too by bringing in more of the community. You might succeed at that where GT has lost some.
Not everyone who is a UGA season ticket holder is alumni. Many are just good ole boys who grew up rooting for the big state school.
State has the advantage of not being the stepchild, that's what GT is for.
I'll bet y'all get that venue, and your attendance goes up.

Can Turner field fit a football or soccer field? It obviously fit a athletic track back in 1996 before they built the outfield stuff so it seems like a smart idea to preserve Olympic heritage and keep the stadium in use by converting it into a football stadium instead of tearing it down.

I've always said a Waffle House right there on the corner of Chandler and Georgia Avenue would be a killer investment. The owner of that lot turned it into a parking lot which he is making next to nothing on because we don't need additional parking there (now at least). The traffic to and from the bars on the weekends and hungry freshman living in front and behind it at 4am when the dining halls are closed, I could see it making a LOT of money.

You couldn't pay me enough to every work there, or manage it. lol

Wife and I always thought a well placed Steak and Shake would rake money in. That was of course they actually built one (but not very close to student housing, or the bars).

Actually would be pretty cool. I am sure they could even include a museum showing the evolution.

Don't know since I haven't been there in a while but it was called the Lexus level, those seats in front of the club seats provide a great viewing angle , right behind the rail down the base line .

I think comes down to one simple thing, money. This is probably something that Ga State needs to make happen but it seems the money may not be there. I believe they currently have over a billion dollar in bonds all ready AND just recently raised the student fees to fund the football program. I don't see them being able to get more money from the state or the students at this time which would mean they would have to raise private funds to make it happen. Not a good track record with that.....

Hopefully they can keep the corruption and under the table payments to a minimum and get it right this time since it will be for a university and there will likely be state and possible federal oversight. 50/50 at best.

I think you dont have a very good idea as to where GSU lies vs Downtown and vs the Ted.

not on campus, north and west of two major interstates and depending on where you are a good walk in the city which is different than an on campus walk. It is possible not to live ITP and know a lot about the ATL. Especially when you are in real estate and actually go off research.

lol. I wish you could've put that last actual sentence first so I couldn't have wasted my time reading this comment.

You clearly haven't been downtown anytime in the last decade if you consider turner field, a stadium that is max 5 blocks away, off campus.
We have parked in the blue lot since the 80's and students used to regularly walk to their cars. I see those 32k students all over downtown daily. Downtown is our campus.

Some of the worst areas of Down town. Hence why the Braves are leaving...the only reason you have the opportunity is because the area is crappy. 03-lmfao
