Jim Fox new APP basketball head coach
http://www.appstatesports.com/ViewArticl...=209457523

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT JIM FOX
“Jim was a significant factor in our success and will be a superb addition to the Appalachian State program. He has a clear understanding and respect for what Appalachian State represents after having played against them through the years. I was thoroughly impressed with Charlie Cobb and the search process. Jim is fortunate to work with Charlie. We will miss Jim, but I’m certain he will write a similar story of success for Appalachian State as he did at Davidson.”
— Davidson head coach Bob McKillop

“Coach Fox is a great leader that knows how to connect with his players both on and off the court. He knows the game, puts the time in to make himself better and will get the most out of each player he coaches. He is a guy that I keep in touch with to this day because of how much he pushed me on the court and also genuinely cared about me. App State is getting a gem.”
— Golden State Warriors guard and NBA All-Star Stephen Curry

“I’m really happy for Jim. He’s a guy that has worked tirelessly to do his part in helping make Davidson what it is today. He’s bright and clearly understands what it takes to be successful. App State hit a home run with Jim Fox.”
— Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens

“Jim Fox is ready. He’s worked his way up the ladder by wearing many different hats in the Davidson program. Coach McKillop does a tremendous job of preparing his assistant coaches to become head coaches. Jim has been very successful as a recruiter, as a teacher, as a game coach, and he’s ready for this great opportunity at Appalachian State.”
— Elon head coach Matt Matheny

Interesting looks like Fox was to McKillop what Byington was for Cremins.

So basically everyone thinks he will be our shining star. Good with that.
Never know going from associate hc to hc, but sounds real promising.

The APR concerns me more than even the won/loss percentage.
Got to concentrate on that before anything else. Never heard of an
App State team being in such bad shape that way.

RE: Jim Fox new APP basketball head coach
We may be in trouble pretty soon with that, and I hate it for Coach Fox as he had absolutely nothing to do with it. However, if he recruits the type of kids he did at Davidson, he'll have us back in good academic shape in no time. That's part of why I really like the hire. If we can recruit kids as smart on the court as they are off the court like Davidson has, we'll be just fine.

At first I was underwhelmed as I thought Matt McMahon's resume was as strong if not stronger. But the more I am reading and learning about Fox the more I like the hire.

I'm pretty thrilled with it. He seems to be completely all in and hungry. Already has us as his background on twitter, with the game against Davidson no less! I've just got a good feeling about him. Who knows, I could be completely wrong, but we have no where to go but up.

RE: Jim Fox new APP basketball head coach
Its hard to believe that just a handful of years ago we knocked off a CUSA, SEC and ACC team to win the San Juan Shootout and get an at large to the NIT. Also beat a Steph Curry led Davidson squad. Many pundits thought we were one of the first four out for an at large to the NCAA's. I feel as quick as it dropped we can get it back with the right leadership and a couple good recruiting classes.

I hope everyone gives him the chance to get this thing straight. He comes from a well-run and respected program so AppState's hope is all that rubbed off on him. I hope it is the case. We have been able to tell the "Appalachian Story" well with football recruits, I hope we can do the same with basketball.

No offense to Matt, but we needed to get away from the Buzz tree. He should have been the coach four years ago, but it's too late for that.

Matt is not just from Buzz's tree. He one of our own and put 16 years of blood, sweat and tears into the program. No one cared more for ASU basketball than Matt, or did 4 years ago anyway. Matt's body of work trump's Fox's by quite a bit and has been singled out numerous times as one of the top assistant coaches in America. Fox was the 3rd assistant at Davidson until Metheny took the Elon job 2 years ago. Word on the street is McKillop grooming his son to take over at Davidson prompted Fox to get out. He was quite adamant in the interview with DJ he went after this job hard. Mentioned he knew Charlie. Sure he could read the tea leaves and had good idea there was going to be a job opening. Smart to lay that type of ground work. A good friend who is deep in the college basketball business said he had never heard of Fox before yesterday. It isn't like he was a known commodity in collegiate basketball circles.

I honestly hoping we would attract someone with a little more experience going into the SunBelt. Honestly he is probably as good as we can do outside Matt. I'm sure there aren't many guys who wanted to tackle the mess ASU is in. No history or tradition ( 2 conference championships in 40 years), no fan support (ave 1100 in a really nice 8300 seat arena), bad APR issues (possible loss of scholarships) and going into a much tougher conference with questionable talent. Don't think I would have taken that task on.

He said the right things during the presser, but was very vague on some direct questions about staff and style of play. Really made a point to deflect all questions about "the past" and talk about the future. Typical New Yorker he certainly doesn't lack for confidence. Interesting his Dad runs one of the largest AAU basketball organizations in NYC. The references to Cremins are inevitable and mentioned Bobby's Bronx to Boone Express and he may crank it up again.

Interesting nobody from Char TV or newspaper showed up for the press conference. Prob due to the fact he will be in Char this evening at the Yosef stop.

A 5 year contract. Probably the only way he would take the job. Tells me the first 2 years are basically throw aways. $200K plus $10K bonus each season, $200K for assistants and $50K for DBO. It's good to see App finally make a decent investment in MBB. Those extra $'s from the SB are already paying off.

Next year is going to be interesting. Best of luck Coach Fox! You're gonna need it!

I was impressed that Brad Stevens had such positive things to say about Coach Fox. I would have never imagined that Brad Stevens would know who Coach Fox was, especially if Fox is unknown in collegiate basketball circles.

With that said, I get the desire to have Matt come home, and I would have supported that move. I also think, as of now, it looks like we've made a good--potentially great--hire.

Just watched the Fox press conference.Looks to be a good hire.Key may be getting some AAU players from NY with his dad's connections. Was looking forward to the trip to Boone(been before) to see WKU play.Maybe I can still see a game on the way to or from a Charlotte contest.
