Once one gets past all the b.s. and gets down to brass tacks this is a sports affiliated conference and Liberty and JMU are the two best viable options.

Most JMU fans have no interest in the SBC. We don't need another school with fans constantly pimping to get out.

Liberty is a private school with agendas very different from the rest of the SBC schools.

Wait until a public university is ready and willing.

We are not in a situation where we have to scramble for members.

I presume most of the JMU student body and alumni are from middle Atlantic states and would have little interest in ties to a conference centered on the Gulf coast. It'd be the same for App St if they were in the MAC which is why I'm glad we're in the Belt. We do have a nice rivalry with them and they are similar to us in many ways other than the non-Southern ties.
Saw a comparison on Virginia colleges just the other day. Only 33% of JMU's students are from outside the state.

Can you buy sweet tea in Harrisonburg, VA? If so then there isn't much of a culture clash, get them in the Belt. If not, lets move on.

Yes, you certainly can.

The western side of Va, much like NC, is more southern than other parts of the state.

I don't think the opposition to JMU joining the Sun Belt is coming from the AD.

That is what I suspected...I like western Virginia.

No, I don't either. If they do not get in and Liberty or EKU or even UMass is taken it...would just want to hear their vitriol about how the effort was messed up.

Sorry, can you please show me somewhere that you found out that JMU has decided it's MAC or bust?

I must have missed that.

You're probably right; there was a time of uncertainty 18-24 months ago where there was concern about having time to process the FCS schools to maintain eligibility given certain realignment scenarios though.

At that time the conference was down to 8 members (including WKU), then on 3/28/13 the SB added 4 schools (2 FBS, 2 FCS NMSU/Idaho, App St/GaSo). WKU left on April 2, 2013.

So when did anybody know WKU was leaving to replace Tulsa in CUSA? Perhaps, it was thought that WKU could be talked into staying, otherwise, why invite Idaho? Adding NMSU/App St/Ga Sou were necessary to get to 10 football members.

WKU and a few others pushed hard for a championship game...At the time we saw it as a way to keep WKU happy because their biggest rival had just left, and they had not been invited yet.

NMSU and Idaho were a means to get us to 12. Otherwise, we'd have just added App and GSU and stopped.

I guess the lure of CUSA was too much for WKU to resist. More TV $$/exposure? Actually, I think NMSU would have been added anyway. Having 10 fb members is much more stable and still play 8 conference games can get another team bowl eligible.

I think Idaho is really just a few years away of being in the Big Sky fully. The Sunbelt membership won't be the life saver for FBS. They didn't do well in the first round and their attendence was really bad and this time around will still be the same. When the their president sees a lot of empty seats, that is going to be the telling sign.

Right. Knowing Idaho the way some of us do (SBC football member 2001-2005), those guys are going to hang on to FBS football until their last finger is pried from the edge.

NMSU, on the other hand, was a good Sun Belt member and left the conference on very good terms and if not for location (proximity to the WAC schools at the time), would probably still be Sun Belt members.

This is their last chance...that's for sure.

However, I think most of us understand that Idaho is a very short term option. You can almost bet that in the next couple years we'll serve Idaho with notice, so we can bring in another Western based all sports Member.

All it really takes is one conference by law eliminating football only members, and its done.

I agree. not likely to happen. they are both respected state flagship schools. their states are not likely to let them be diminished.

Idaho no longer is a flagship school.

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2012/fe...-flagship/

when the new president see more empty seats than filled, the reality will set in. Playing in the Big Sky will be the only option at keeping football, otherwise dropping football is the only other choice.

NMSU is an odd duck or pato.

Playing FCS football is no more viable than playing FBS because there are so few FCS schools within reasonable distance. They would save little if any on travel and quite possibly spend more. Having the rivalries with New Mexico and UTEP make it improbable that the Aggies would elect to go down or drop football (they've played New Mexico 104 times and UTEP 91 times)

Idaho is in a different pot of stew.

They have an in-state school more than willing to welcome them back to the Big Sky in Idaho State and their second most played rival (Montana) is in the Big Sky (first is Washington State). Boise State will no longer play them and they show only one future game with Washington State.

I think you can sit down and crunch the numbers and come to the conclusion that as long as NMSU plans to make football part of their sport offering as a Division I school that they should play FBS. With Idaho and the budget adjustment that would come with playing FCS, I don't think it is clear-cut that FBS is their best option in a spreadsheet analysis, not that many schools actually do a spreadsheet analysis in determining their level of play.
