I don't know all the numbers but Ohio played 21 basketball games at home last year for an average of about 6,150 at home.

Total attendance is always skewed towards teams that play more home games. The effect is more pronounced in football.

Surely those attendance numbers, football wise, are wrong.

There had to be more than a 12,000 average.

RE: Gordon Gee on Ohio: One of the real treasures of this country
Quote:Ohio can boast of having the country's best campground, with Hocking Hills State Park finishing ahead of other go-to camping destinations such as Yellowstone National Park.

The honor was awarded by Tripleblaze.com, an Internet camping/hiking portal that features campground reviews, caving reviews, camping equipment reviews and other related subjects.

Tripleblaze.com listed the 2,356-acre Hocking Hills State Park in southeast Ohio's Hocking County as the best of the best of 100 public and private campgrounds in the U.S.

Thus, Hocking Hills' camping features and amenities climbed over a host of national parks for the coveted No. 1 spot. Such national treasures as Yellowstone, Mount Rainier and Glacier national parks all ranked below Hocking Hills.

Hocking Hills State Park has 156 campsites with electricity and 13 without, 40 deluxe cabins, three rental camper cabins with fewer amenities, nine hiking trails, two mountain bike trails, a dining lodge and five picnic areas.

Among the park's famous features is Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave Gorge and several waterfalls, while the 9,238-acre Hocking State Forest is adjacent to the park.

Also included in its Top 100 Campgrounds, Tripleblaze.com listed Indian Lake State Park (Lakeview) in 42nd, Paint Creek State Park (Hillsboro) in 44th and Tappan Lake (Cadiz/Deersville) in 45th.

Tappan is owned and operated by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, while the other three locations are owned and operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Parks and Recreation.

"We've ranked the best places to camp in the United States using our unique campsite popularity algorithm that accounts for the average rating and number of reviews for a campground, the number of people who have camped or wish they could camp at that campground," says Tripleblaze.com.'s website lead-in to its top 100 campground listing.

In describing its selection of Hocking Hills, Tripleblazer.com is quoted by digitaljournal.com as saying: "Located in the heart of Ohio's stunning Hocking Hills region, the campground beat out hundreds of camping sites across America, including the famed Yosemite National Park, which came in second, and Mount Rainier National Park, which is ranked No. 14.

"Tripleblaze.com describes Hocking Hills State Park Campground as offering 'a variety of recreational opportunities in a splendid natural setting. Towering cliffs, waterfalls and deep hemlock-shaded gorges lure the hiker and naturalist and serve as a backdrop to popular facilities and accommodations.'"

No one agrees more with Tripleblaze.com's assessment than Ohio's Natural Resources Department.

"This award is no surprise; we've always known that Hocking Hills is the best campground in the nation," said James Zehringer, the Natural Resources Department's director.

"I am proud of the dedicated men and women who work to make our state parks a national treasure. They have worked countless hours helping visitors and showcasing Ohio's natural beauty."

RE: Gordon Gee on Ohio: One of the real treasures of this country
Quote:Ohio found a diamond in the rough last year with true freshman rush end Tarell Basham, who looks to be an anchor on the d-line for several years to come. With 2015 verbal commit DaVon Hamilton, the Bobcats may have found another defensive lineman who could make an immediate impact.

The 6-foot-4, 285 pound defensive tackle committed to the 'Cats over an offer from in-state rival Toledo. The Pickerington Central High School Senior (Pickerington, Ohio) is currently ranked a 3-star defensive tackle by Rivals, and a Top 50 prospect in the state of Ohio.

"I really liked {Solich's) coaching style. I heard a lot about all the bowl games [Ohio has] went to, and how many players they've sent to the league, and also because my defensive coach at my high school is an Ohio graduate," Hamilton told Hustle Belt about why he pledged to become a Bobcat.

During a pair of unofficial visits to Ohio, Hamilton said he came away impressed with the atmosphere around the program, and the attitude of the team.

RE: Gordon Gee on Ohio: One of the real treasures of this country
Quote:In the catwalks above the Convo floor, Schaus said a new series of banners will also be unveiled. Located on the rings that used to host the flags of countries from around the world, the new banners will give immediate recognition to spectators about Ohio University, Schaus said.

“Colorful. Pagentry oriented,” Schaus said. “Something that when you walk in you’re going to see it right away.”

Ohio is also exploring on new seating for the Convo. The cloth-covered, padded seats that dominate much of the 13,000-seat arena will be a thing of the past. Schaus was unsure when the seating change would happen, but anticipated it would begin in the next year. Ohio will likely use molded, plastic seats for the entire venue.

“They chose a fabric line with those seats. Over the long haul, that’s not really how sports, or large-scale, seating is done,” Schaus said. “A molded plastic seat is a lot more durable. We have been replacing (the cloth seats) piece-meal; it’s too costly from a maintenance standpoint to keep up with it.”

The Convo isn’t the only spot on campus with rennovations in store this summer. At Peden Stadium, the football locker room project — or at least “Phase 1” as Schaus calls it — is scheduled to be completed by August. On tap in the locker room are new black lockers, new carpet and a new layout designed to accomodate more locker spaces.

And Walter Fieldhouse — Ohio’s indoor practice facility — is functional but not yet completely finished. Ohio’s football, baseball, softball and soccer teams were all able to use the facility in the spring, but Schaus said the ‘grand opening’ of the venue will not be until August and may line up with the opening of the fall semester.

Recently, Walter Fieldhouse has had its netting system installed and the track poured. There are still weeks of finishing touches to be added, such as exterior painting, landscaping and finishing off the parking area around the building.

“We couldn’t be happier about the facility,” Schaus said. “We’re eager for everyone to get a chance to use it.”

The current list of improvements doesn’t include upgrades to the scoreboard/videoboard at Peden Stadium, or in the Convocation Center. Schaus said a needed engineering study to determine whether the Convo can support a center-hanging scoreboard has yet to be completed.

The AD understands the desire for upgrades to those fan amenities, but acknowledges funding is the issue.

“They’re fan and consumer oriented. They want more technology, they want higher resolution video boards. They want scoreboards they can see,” Schaus said. “We have to try to be as competitive as we can, but we also have to do something we can afford.”

New scoreboards, for now, remain on Ohio’s wish list. So does a new academic center. Schaus said the space currently allocated to student-athlete academics — located in Peden Tower — is “not enough space and not the right kind of space.”

One possible location for an academic center is in the north end zone area of Peden Stadium. Schaus said the department has not yet settled on a specific plan or location, but admitted that area is “a dream location.”

Quick recap of the athletic improvements:

1) The Convo is getting new seats and banners to help spruce up the place. Its badly needed as the arena looks dated.

2) New scoreboards for the basketball and football arenas are in their planning stages. It might be a couple more years before the cost points line up but it will be soon.

3) Ohio is planning an expansion to its football stadium for an academic center. Once built Peden will be among one of the best facilities in the MAC/G5.

RE: Gordon Gee on Ohio: One of the real treasures of this country
Quote:ABBOTSFORD — There seems to be something awfully fitting about the fact that running back Maleek Irons will continue the next chapter of his football life in a place called Athens, because the best way to describe his feats on the gridiron with Abbotsford’s W.J. Mouat Hawks is to call them Olympian.

How else can you describe the impact of a player who authored his own personal page in the B.C. high school record books, and in doing so created an entirely new set of metrics against which every future running back in this province will be measured against?

In seeking a way to most succinctly sum up the breadth of his accomplishments over two magical senior varsity seasons, we here at The Province simply dubbed him The Triple Crown.

As Irons heads off to join the Ohio University Bobcats in the quaint college burg of Athens, he does so as the owner of the three most significant B.C. high school rushing records:

*Most yards in a career with 6,175.

*Most yards in a season with 3,204 (2012).

*Most yards in a game with 491 (2012).

http://blogs.theprovince.com/2014/06/16/maleek-irons/

Bruno Mars will be playing for the Bobcats this fall. Chose Ohio over Washington and Colorado. Wanted USC for the film career.

OU paved the entire space between Peden and the new IPF. Even paved around the football stadium lights and in an irregular manner to maximize spaces. None of the spaces are permitted for use by game day parking.

It looks like the dream of adding an upper deck to the stadium is officially dead in the water if they are turning that area into a parking lot.
