RE: Will JMU wait for MAC invite?
I think in large part the EMU proximity argument is a cop-out.

Obviously it isn't the best scenario but the first step to success in building support is building a culture and with 18,000 undergrads that's a possibility.

But at some point you have to win. I'd love to see what their attendance looked like during that four year run in the late 80's.

EMU's bball program suffers the same student and community apathy and they have a good team. EMU was a top 100 RPI team and was in the hunt for a division and conference championship all year long but still averaged less than 1K in a very nice bball arena. They got some press when one of their players blasted their fans for not showing up to their CIT home game. Attendance was 373. Insane.

Would be financial ruin for UMass. Not only would they
lose out on the millions being in a conference would bring
them would cause them to either drop football or go back
into FCS.
The Sun Belt likes to help out schools, so a FB only invite to UMass
wouldn't surprise me. Would give Benson another talking point
in his TV negotiations with those NE TV media people also.
Besides giving the SB a 12th football team.

Since the Sunbelt has 2 non-football schools, UMass is the fb-only gift to the Sunbelt to get the CCG and split into divisions. To even out the Olympic spots side, I'm sure there is a non-football school in the east coast (A-Sun conference?)that would like to be part of the Sunbelt.

Unc Greensboro is the only non football school in the socon and pairs nicely with app state

I don't see UNCG leaving the SoCon for the SunBelt. It would either be SoCon or CAA for them...

There is no commitment to sports at UNCG. They add nothing to the Sun Belt unless you just need another meddling, mediocre basketball team and the Sun Belt already has plenty of those including my own Mountaineers. On the plus side though, they do play their home games at the Greensboro Coliseum. There will be plenty of empty seats for fans of visiting teams.

As an UNCG alumnus, I agree with you. Compared to App, their athletic department is run like a Mom & Pop shop. UNCG still lives in the shadow of Women's College...

If NMSU adds its oly sports then there could be two football only schools and two that don't play football. No need to add more. Idaho and UMASS & UALR and UTA.
I actually believe adding Umass as football only and then NMST as a full member may be our best move.

Let me give you a geographic lesson. Beaumont Texas is closer to the Atlantic Ocean than it is to El Paso Texas. Why is giving a travel worried SBC a greater travel in 0lympics and football the best move?

NMSU was a solid member of the Sun Belt and they left on good terms as the Belt understood at the time of their departure...the WAC at that time was a better fit for them. I am not sure Lamar left on good terms.
Lamar left on good terms. SBC understood Lamar wasn't ready to restart football. Lamar budget at that time was very small, under 5 million.

New Mexico State would be a great addition to Olympic sports and the realistic candidates are all a plane ride for ULM. Plus I personally don't want any more FBS teams in Texas, for recruiting purposes.
You have it backwards. Lets use Lamar as an example, hehe, SBC adds Lamar will result in more, not less, ULM and SBC recruitment in Texas, more specifically southeast Texas and gulf coast. SBC won't attract many recruits in Oklahoma because no sbc school is in Oklahoma. SBC add an Oklahoma school, SBC can better recruit there. SBC is losing out on talent in Houston, therefore SBC needs to add Lamar or Sam or HBU or TSU. Adding Lamar gets you both Houston and Golden Triangle.
PS Lamar or Sam need not to be in Houston, just nearby.

Who is Lamar? Jerry Clower's cousin?

In many ways this is totally true. I graduated from App, but work at UNCG so I see it firsthand. It's a shame, the Coliseum could be a huge recruiting advantage for UNCG if they made a genuine commitment to winning. They do have a decent basketball coach now though and the school has much untapped potential if Athletics got in gear.
