RE: Will JMU wait for MAC invite?
Benson is BEATING the 12th team drum. He wants to get that 12th team more than adding quality. He feels like a woman at WalMart looking at a dozen eggs and one is broken, she has to find a carton with a dozen no matter what even while she has eleven at home and the lines are building at the check out.

Seems that JMU is going to wait themselves into irrelevancy.

JMU doesn't need a "plan B" as it is not under the gun. If it doesn't get an invite, or if it does, but it is not a situation that it finds ideal, it can just stay in a very good FCS CAA.
I suspect that, barring an invite to CUSA to partner with ODU, JMU's future is going to be tied to Delaware. They will likely move together or not at all.
EDIT: I think (just a gut feeling, no inside info) that JMU would rather stay in the CAA, but would be forced to consider a move if UD started looking elsewhere. UD is JMU's only real peer now in the CAA unless SBU joined for all sports.

RE: Will JMU wait for MAC invite?
Independence for JMU isn't possible.
Would be financial ruin for UMass. Not only would they
lose out on the millions being in a conference would bring
them would cause them to either drop football or go back
into FCS.
The Sun Belt likes to help out schools, so a FB only invite to UMass
wouldn't surprise me. Would give Benson another talking point
in his TV negotiations with those NE TV media people also.
Besides giving the SB a 12th football team.

Since the Sunbelt has 2 non-football schools, UMass is the fb-only gift to the Sunbelt to get the CCG and split into divisions. To even out the Olympic spots side, I'm sure there is a non-football school in the east coast (A-Sun conference?)that would like to be part of the Sunbelt.

RE: Will JMU wait for MAC invite?
I figure Benson will have to bring some pretty good arguments for additional teams. NMSU and Idaho were picked up when the presidents knew we had schools leaving and both of them had previous ties to the league. The Sun Belt is in a different situation now. Not so desperate. Unless Benson can convince them that adding teams will result in significant revenue increases, I don't think it will be an easy sell. I would rather be at 10 (Idaho to the Big Sky) then expand to 12 with a school that isn't ready or doesn't improve the conference perception. App St. and Ga. Southern did improve the perception in football. Liberty EKU, Missouri State and JMU don't.

Same for JMU.

I'm not sure they do have a plan B.

Here is UMass' plan B

1) Somehow secure an all sports bid to the AAC - Don't see that happening. Would be pretty stupid on the AAC's part.
2) Somehow secure a football only bid to CUSA or the Belt. Neither of those are slam dunks
3) Drop football back to FCS - There is persistent and strong opposition to UMass' FBS move.
4) Persue life as a FBS independent - Could happen.

What you also don't understand is that the UMass' A-10 membership is VERY lucrative. And basketball drives the bus in Amherst. UMass basketball attendance average is comparable with their real football attendance.

I couldn't agree more with you. The best add is to add no one.

#1 is true
#2 Believe is SBC Football-only. Never heard anything regarding CUSA football anywhere at UMass.
#3 is never talked about. Think about UMass firing Charle Molnar with two years left on his contract. It took a lot of people to be 100% all in for FBS; the Chancellor, President, Board of Trustees, and of course large donors. One, who paid the 880k plus on severance packages to the coaches. Not a penny from that is coming from the University or State.
#4. Thought about it and don't like the idea.
#5. Perhaps an all sports to CUSA but have not heard anything about that as well.

You guys know that I strongly prefer SBC Football only. This gives us a home and we should be solid by the time we play in conference. This will give the other transition teams time to come up to full scholarships before adding another transition team.

Hope it all happens and it should be an interesting month or so.

The attendance is not true, we had 20k plus games and no game under 10k. Attendance went up almost 50% between year one and two of FBS football. Expect another increase this year as well, especially with having Boston College for a home game even thou it's Labor Day week end.

I don't see UNCG leaving the SoCon for the SunBelt. It would either be SoCon or CAA for them...

If NMSU adds its oly sports then there could be two football only schools and two that don't play football. No need to add more. Idaho and UMASS & UALR and UTA.

In basketball each division plays every team home and away, but one in other division once rotating home and away for 18 game schedule. There would be one team in other division that would not play a cross division team. Bottom line...to build rpi avoid D2 teams except for exhibition games.

55 more days until June 1. Tick, tick, tick. Time is running out of adding a team this year.

RE: Will JMU wait for MAC invite?
The only reason to add FCS teams is to protect your conference from total implosion, the MAC, if anything, is sturdy. There is no financial incentive to add beyond 12 teams, so unless ESPN tells the MAC that adding the bustling metropolis of Harrisburg, VA would be a total game changer I don't see the MAC extending an invite to JMU, or any FCS team, anytime in the near future.
