RE: First FBS win
I'd say a few of our teams from past seasons and not necessarily the ones that won FCS Championships were better than what we'll see this upcoming year. We'd still be considered reloading even at the FCS level. I'm definitely optimistic for the future though. We have as easy a FBS home schedule as one could hope for plus we get Southern Miss on the road so any of those are very winnable games if we show up. All in all I'd consider 6-6 a very successful record for App State in 2014.

Hope not anyway.

I have several posters that I seem to get along with pretty well. Obviously you're one of them. We tend to think alike, but not on this issue. I think you might be overly optimistic about your chances. Now, if you had kept your old ball coach and won 10, 11 or 12 games in FCS last season, I think you'd finish 2nd or 3rd this year. But with a lackluster showing and no Jerry Moore, I think there will be some uncertainty as to how well you'll do. I'd say the same about Georgia Southern with their new offense and new coach. That's not to say the two of you won't be the kings of the SBC, you certainly have the prestige, history, and tradition to do so. Just not in year one.

Had the same pieces that brought you here were to still be here, I'd be very afraid.

Edited with a another angle to look at: The flip side to that is you're playing in a SBC that is not the same SBC of old. This league is mostly start-ups and move-ups. You could have an advantage there. Best of luck except for one. 04-cheers

Agreed, we're capable of beating anyone in the Belt same as any other team, but we're so, so young and thin on depth chart as far as FBS teams go. I'll say it again, 6-6 is the absolute best I can hope for in 2014.

What did you think of Mario Christobal at FIU? Good coach, bad coach? Fired the year after he was being considered for the Rutgers head FB job. He had two good years at FIU. Two bowl games at FIU.
Was it Christobal, who had those two good years; or his OC that was there for those two years only? Even with those two years of bowl teams, Christobal was 27 wins and 47 losses. Hardly think it was him.

All you need to know about Cristobal is that he got hired Miami and Alabama within weeks of being fired.

Doesn't matter. Not the point. Waiting on TroyFootball05 to respond and I will continue.
By the way, why was Christobal fired?
He supposedly had been offered the Rutgers job at the end of the previous season before he withdrew his name.

Not really my point. But ok. I think you guys could be good with him down the road. There will probably be an adjustment phase if not more. For what it's worth I would have LOVED to have ASU and GS at their peak coming into the SBC.

You might know more about the guy's past than I do, but I'll offer this. My honest memory of FIUs offense wasn't a respectable one. It was a one man show. 3 yards and a cloud of dust, then lob it to T.Y. Hilton, who is now doing well for the colts. When he went to the NFL, FIU won three games. Scott left that year too, so the drop off was probably due to both. But don't underestimate what TY Hilton did for FIU.

And to be fair, FIU had the 14th ranked defense in the country before they dropped off. Due to playing SBC teams, but that's still very very good. FIU's offense, while decent, wasn't really what won games for them.

Again, not saying he's not a good OC, I just wasn't all that impressed.

I think we will be better in 2014 than 2013 but I'm not sure we win many more games. We have a lot of guys back from a very young team but we lost two of our most valuable players in Washington and Peacock. They were two very sure handed receivers. I'm not convinced we can replace them and that will have a negative impact on the receiving game. We do have some talented guys coming in but you can't count on them right away.

What you saw is exactly what others saw. Putrid opinion, even with Hilton, but gets the results.

I hope every one of y'all's coaches watch the films of us getting beat by four FCS teams till their eyes bleed. I promise we run the exact same offense and that everyone in the conference should be prepared for an all flexbone, no passing game :)

I think Troy has the bigger adjustment to make this year truthfully. USA's schedule is not as favorable as a few others, which is why I think some believe they may fall a bit.

We won 6 games last year. I think that if you look at our schedule

@App, GaSo, GaSt, Troy, @ULL, @Ark State, @Idaho, Tex State should provide us with 6 games where we would be either favored or even money. If we don't stumble, 6 conference wins assumes we hold serve at home and win at App and Idaho. Not seeing much crazy with that prediction. Then we have our OOC schedule (@Kent, Navy, Miss State, @So Carolina). We should beat Kent and should have a decent shot with Navy.

So, I'm thinking 7 to 8 wins and 5 to 6 conference wins plus a bowl would be the most likely outcome. A good season would be 6-2 in conference and 8-4 overall. And while I don't think we'll be favored in Lafayette or Jonesboro or against Mississippi State at home, none of those games would be 'end the world' upsets.

That assumes 3 road wins. But I think we can pull that one off. And beat Troy.

A 6-2 conference record would guarantee a 3rd place finish, which is where the most optimistic punters are predicting. A 5-3 record would probably get us there too.

Our schedule does us no favors. But it is manageable.

I see 8 games where I see USA as an underdog.
Then again, with us running a new scheme that I haven't even seen, you guys might destroy us? I don't see you beating Navy though. I predict you lose that one by 3 or more TD's.

App St has USM early but on the road. They don't have their first home game against a FBS team until 10/4 against USA.

Georgia Southerns first home game is agaisnt App St, which I won't count because its a transition team. So 10/11 vs Idaho is a great chance. NCST would be awesome though and kick it off in style.

Georgia St has a good chance 9/6 vs NMSU.

App State's first game is against Michigan in Ann Arbor this year.

At the 1:40 mark that is me in the #70 jersey screaming my a$$ off. You can actually here me on the tape. That was my roughly my 10 seconds of fame.

Definitely wouldn't want to get into a wrestling match with the man, at least not unless I had some metal folding chairs handy to whomp him on the head with.
