A ludicrous assertion. What keeps the conference together is "We really want FBS football"

If all this talk about realignment has illuminated anything for me, it's that the Sun Belt will never be in risk of ceasing to exist(with the exception of a possible merger at some point with someone) because there is no shortage of schools looking to keep/move up to FBS

To clarify, ULL and Ark State are the pivotal votes in any expansion right now. ULL and Ark state will not vote for a JMU/UMASS/Liberty addition.

Don't have votes - Idaho & NMSU

No votes

Texas State
UTA
UALR
ULM
Ark State
ULL

Possible Yes votes

App State
Ga State
Ga Southern
Troy
South Alabama

Troy and USA will not break ranks with Ark State and ULL.

I don't think Texas State will break ranks with the Cajuns either. I have nothing official from the school to support this, but that is the feeling I got when speaking to some folks in the administration (to be clear, they never said directly this, but they mentioned several times that the Cajuns and us were very much in agreement on things, leading me to make that statement).

I'm sure the same was said of the WAC at one point in the not so distant past. I don't think the SBC ceasing to exist is as far fetched as you imagine.

I doubt it happens, but things could look very different if another round of realignment starts at the top.

That was never said of the WAC, at least not by people in the know. Every team targeted by the WAC to move up either wasn't interested, or so far from being ready they weren't viable.

Not concerned about the Sun Belt staying healthy. Only way the SBC will go out of
business if ever members voted to change the name. One of it's strengths is that
we are not overly concerned about market's like some conferences. Partly out of necessity
maybe, but it is refreshing. Having good schools with avid sports fans is more of the
credo. Think that is why the SBC will do well in the coming years.

1. Bring UMass in as football only and add NMSU all sports.
or
2. Bring in an all sports eastern member. I would assume JMU is first on list and if not them I guess Liberty.

What should the conference do?

Option 1 just mucks things up worse.

As I've said, I'm pro-NMSU all-sports but I'm not an AD trying to control costs so I can do things that help my program get better and paying airlines and air charter companies don't do that. The reality is NMSU is further from the closest full member than the longest trip in the MAC.

We cannot add NMSU as #12 Olympic and use travel partners without splitting at least four of our five in-state pairs.

That leaves Option 2 as the more logical choice.

Yeah, I'm just not sure how "leave" is in anyway an answer to "what should the conference do?"

I'm sure there are a good number of folks who would be glad to see Louisiana leave so they'd no longer have wet blankets like this guy hanging around degrading the conference.

I wonder RaginCajun25, where exactly do you plan on leaving to? Southland?

If they left the conference, there's no guarantee people wouldn't hang around that are no longer in the conference......

Don't discredit what USA means to AState and Louisiana. Jags leadership has historically been even keeled maybe a touch conservative, easy I-10 trip for the Cajuns, sit in a high value recruiting area for AState, well regarded by the community that hosts a bowl that AState has grown rather fond of as well.

You're talking about the WAC at a later point than I am, I remember very well when the WAC was obviously doomed, but there were and still are FCS programs in the WACs footprint that would have viewed joining the WAC much differently were it a conference of ten existing FBS schools attempting to go to 12 or 14 or hell even 8 trying to get back to 10 or 12, but by the time the WAC was approaching these schools seriously the conference was already on life support.

Let's just suppose the top down realignment begins and eventually AAC ends up taking Rice and USM which finally breaks the camel's back for UTEP and they tap UTSA and the two of them head to the MWC. Banowsky finally gets his way and CUSA goes to 16 by taking Arkansas State, Louisiana, South Alabama, Texas State, Georgia State and James Madison.

The Sun Belt is now down to Troy, ULM, Georgia Southern, App and NMSU who has been given full membership out of necessity, Idaho bites the bullet, their program is not sustainable in that conference(and of course UTA and UALR). Outside of Liberty who is desperately seeking any FBS invite, some other FCS schools who were borderline on moving up decide not to make the move to a far flung conference on life support.

Again, I'm not predicting it, but I think there is a doomsday scenario in which schools that appear to have FBS potential and interest in the Sun Belt could decide the move simply isn't worth it. There were programs capable of joining the WAC, they just decided it was a sinking ship not worth saving.

Back 15 years ago the book on the WAC was that MWC would eventually gut the western side, maybe leave a couple western stragglers behind and UTEP, Rice, Tulsa, SMU, La.Tech would remake the league into a southwestern oriented league. SWC REBORN!

The western part has been deemed doomed since the MWC formed.

Only thing that threw conventional wisdom off was the ACC raiding the Big East, who raided C-USA, who raided the eastern flank of the WAC.

Can the Sun Belt die? Absolutely but not as long as AAC is chopping off bits of C-USA and C-USA is chopping off bits of Sun Belt. There are too many schools wanting to move up in the region.

What would kill the Sun Belt would be a catastrophic split of AAC or CUSA, just as losing half of WAC16 made it inevitable that the Big West would go out of business followed later by the WAC.

There have been a number of assertions made by posters that may not be accurate at this time. I’m not sure UL, ASU and Texas State will not vote for another eastern program if some compromise is met.

1) I do believe UL, ASU and Texas State would like to see NMSU become a full member. Their basketball and baseball programs will add great value to this conference with Western Kentucky’s departure until the Aggies football program comes around.

2) I also think it’s established that UL, ASU and Texas State will not vote for any Southland Conference program period. So if not Missouri State or NMSU as a full member, I see no other options but to add another eastern program.

3) With some type of compromise in that manner, I could see a possible compromise being struck with UL, ASU and Texas State. At this point with the announcement forthcoming, some type of compromise has been reached.

Exactly....South drives the bus too. We let Texas State ride shotgun as well in exchange for the ability to recruit in Texas.

Any conference can die. Like I said, am not concerned. Not at all.
Only see the Sun Belt getting stronger and stronger.

If the SBC did get really large could see part of it breaking off.
A lot of pressure will come from schools over the next few years
to form smaller more regional conferences. Especially with G-5
schools if kept on a short food bowl by the P-5 schools. Have to
pay the bills and cutting down on travel is appealing way to many.

To elaborate....

Leaving the Sun Belt is the only way to continue having a "growth" with our athletics. Not bashing anyone, but this conference is made up of a bunch of start-up teams. We do have some quality adds in certain sports, but overall we are in the declining stage. For UL to continue on the current path of success (i.e. Facility Improvements, Athletics, Student Pop Growth) we need money. This conference does not give you that opportunity. We will always be dragging behind in RPI due to our conference strength, forcing to play money games because we have "no" TV deals. Our revenue sharing (I know it was voted on) isn't doing any favors to elite conference teams that have to cover expenses of other members. The commish of this league is by far the worst amongst all D1.

Sorry gents, but you can polish a turd all you want, NONE of us will prosper or continue to grow at this rate.

My #3 choice was basically a show or go type situation. Add quality or go find quality elsewhere.

And which conference do your propose holding at gun point until they agree to add you?

We're in the same boat you guys are. No one wants us either...but we're not complaining about something we have no control over.

To reiterate...

Southland?

You cannot lose a ton of schools like the Sun Belt has the last few years and snap
your fingers and everything be taken care of in an instant. You have to build, and
that is probably from the bottom mainly. It's great to get the big head when your
team has been doing really well, especially within conference. However, that huge
loss of members may have had a contributing effect on why certain schools have
done well recently. If we continue to build, increase our RPI and continue to win,
then a decent TV contract is almost assured of coming. If members only continue
to think of jumping ship, they are mainly going to become after thoughts wherever
they go, and we will continue to struggle. Fight or flight.
