Instant credibility? With who? Nobody in Texas (I use that as an example) knows that NDSU won the FCS national championship.

Hell, no one in Texas knew Texas State made the semi-finals in 2005.

I don't say that to take away from their accomplishments. It's impressive. But casual fans have no clue about that. And when folks say "they won the FCS national championship" you are going to get quite a few "oh that's great. but it's not DI football".

You're kidding yourself if you think NDSU's FCS record gives them any credibility. Them winning often in FCS doesn't mean they are the most ready for FBS either. It's more about facilities, budget, and fanbase. They might have the fanbase, but their facilities are lacking. Budget? No clue.

They have a 17M budget. I'm sure some people in North Texas know who they are seeing they've won three straight titles in Frisco. I get what you are saying though. NDSU is the team to add if you want to strike while the iron is hot. App St had that same fire a couple years ago and have slipped a little. But that Michigan win has a little in the legs left for people to remember the name. I bet more people know about them beating Michigan than they know then won 3 FCS championships. NDSU has been a giant killer as well.

Did you not see College Gameday show up to Fargo last season? Have you been living under a rock? They are media darlings after beating K-State.

I'm not wild about NDSU. History says programs rise and fall and if they don't transition well and fall, you are stuck.

I'm more intrigued by the state of the North Dakota economy and their desperate need for workers. That bodes well for their future ability to pay for the program though it may not be good for their enrollment.

I suppose adding NDSU as a football only would be similar to Idaho. In any case they would be a long trip for any Belt team. Heck they could even be added to the east but I would prefer an all sports add.

North Dakota, as a state, has tons of money. Surplus almost every year. IIRC, they were willing or did drop a boatload of money into some hockey facilities.

If NDSU had a birdie in the ear of those who determine what is done with state money, they could have a larger arena. And BTW, the home field advantage there is almost cheating. Louder than any stadium in the nation while they're on defense, and you can hear whispers when they are on offense. Anybody that has been will vouch for that.

I'd love nothing more than to get another shot at them on equal footing again. That is a program, like ours, that has a die hard fan base that knows football, and isn't afraid of the big boys. Hell they even had College Game day there this past year.

Again, if we are serious about football, we do what it takes to get NDSU...and drop Idaho for Montana.

If we go ahead and snag the cream of the FCS crop and have a buyout, who else would MAC and CUSA bring up?

If we can keep this conference together until the next TV deal is signed, we have a great chance of being the hands down "best of the rest".

To be fair NDSU has probably gotten more press the last 2 years than most teams in the Sunbelt...as an FCS team. When was the last time college gameday was at a Sunbelt team's campus? Whether they're ready or not is another question, but at this point i'd be willing to bet that as many people know of them as much or more than most of the teams in the conference.

NDSU isn't ideal, but if we're gonna go the "best team, not best market" route, then NDSU needs to be in the discussion.

Fill in the blank

ULL would ______________________ before they ever let us invite McNeese.

I mean...I admit it would be quite a cool prank to play on their president, pretending we were seriously interested in McNeese.

Doesn't McNeese usally beat ULL?

Not trying to start an argument but doesn't McNeese take players that cannot get into other schools and have a lot of upsets early in the football seasons when these players are fresh and uninjured?
Have heard that several times. Doubt they would be able to do that so much in the SBC.
Tell me if I am wrong, just what I had heard.

No idea not real up to date on the program.
The team McNeese had last year would have been competitive in the SB.

Going off memory here, so please forgive the holes in the story.

They used to have a program for academically ineligible/character risks where basically they weren't on the team (no scholarship), but got assistance from the athletic department to get their heads on straight/get grades worked out/heal up.

After that year, if they were up to snuff, they were placed on the team. SO they do have a feeder system where they take lots of players that don't work out at other schools.

Sounds similar to a program that Marshall has for people with learning disabilities to help them and to qualify and play football. That's one reason a lot of MU posters say that they wouldn't join the AAC if ever asked to join because they would have to drop their program.

I love the program at the FCS level, as most players in FCS don't make it to the NFL. Ergo, they kinda have to get an education while playing football.

FBS? It's more of a business, where even though still very few players make the NFL, players are more focused on getting to the NFL. I think in that environment, it can be too easily abused to the detriment to the player.
