I'm sure that's the reason Benson is scrambling to get another team on board....he needs more Benson-backers.

Well I guess we have every Sun Belt team to thank also for voting us in to the conference.

Benson keeps talking about that the Sun Belt needs to be like the other conferences (or at least the great majority of them) and have a championship game. It is obvious after last year when no 12th team was added and so far this year no 12th team has been added that either the school (s) we want don't want to join the Sun Belt or the schools who are willing do not have the required 9 votes or both.

He thinks the conference is a stepping stone. He has said as much many times. Yes, he is a big part of the problem.

He knows he'll get his fat paycheck regardless. He is the definition of apathetic.

The conference really needs to have a plan for branding. Especially for the Basketball side of the Conference. He has got to get us in the conversation on the national stage. We need a TV contract that is better than what we saw this year. The TV exposure was sad.

It's not a matter of branding. It's a matter of having a commissioner that doesn't think his conference is a tinker toy.

Every conference except the SEC is a stepping stone and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to remember that crack is whack.

Unless you are a basketball school

So, this thread has nothing to do with the Sun Belt. And is really about C-USA?

Rice great baseball, UTEP has a national championship in their history basket ball and ok football. Rice Ok football. So you base every thing on Troy, two newbies, ULM thats it.

I am not as confident in this as you are. Our administration's goal is to make ourselves the most prominent G5 program and to play in a BCS Bowl. We will play in whatever league accomplishes that goal. If They don't feel CUSA accomplishes that goal, they wont move.

Ideally, I think we want in the AAC. Which isn't happening as long as Memphis is in the league.

Not going to happen until ASU is a Tier 1 academically either.

That part we can control, and are working on.

There would be no need for divisions nor a 12th team, there would be a need to adopt something more binding than guidelines to determine who makes the game and where it is held.

Exactly

I figured that was the point of quote... To show that if you take out the conference name/commissioner (or president) name, you can find someone bitching about it on every conference message board.

I once saw a post where a Southern Conference fan was detailing the long list of awful commissioners they had been subjected to.

I responded and asked, "Is it possible that the problem isn't the people being hired but rather the people doing the hiring and how they run their programs?"

A lot of people like to blame anybody but themselves.

Also anybody who thought CUSA was going to be good overall in basketball was nuts. If you look at what they have, what they will have, and what they got before with what they had one bid was the most likely outcome.

CUSA basketball isn't anything special. It is a mishmash league of mostly mediocre programs (at best) with a couple of better programs that cannot carry the whole conference by themselves.

Is a conference championship game really worth much to G-5 conferences? Do those games make the conferences money? If they do, then by all means, have one. If not, I don't see any advantage to playing one. In fact, USM knocked Houston out of a BCS bowl in the CUSA championship game three years ago. That cost everybody in CUSA about $1M each.

I forget how much that N. Illinois loss last year cost the MAC, but it was a pile of money to be sure.

If not having played in a conference championship game would not have knocked NIU out of a BCS Bowl bid, its stupid to have had to play in one.

Thank you and absolutely correct. This 12th team stuff won't slow. At this point I have heard invitations extended to North Dakota State, Eastern Kentucky, Belmont, Florida Gulf Coast, Liberty, Lamar, JMU, MSU, Jacksonville State, UMass, some SWAC team and God know who else. Degrades every school in the conference that has built their programs over the years and wants to improve the SBC.

I think that after Fresno State lost late in the season, NIU was considered a shoe-in for a BCS Bowl spot. Then they lost their championship game and that was that.

But on the flip side it's a 13th game against a team that will be good in the power ratings and a win will improve the resume of the victor. Remember NIU 2012 had to win the MAC title game in an upset to make the BCS that year.

While the BCS is gone I remember Non power five teams such as Utah, TCU and Boise wining the championship game and still getting told to " Squeal like a pig". In truth with or without a championship game we are at the whims of the P5 at that particular moment.

Playing in conference championship retracted. Still doesn't change the facts. Why be in a hurry to add a a game that may not help and certainly doesn't hurt you.
