App State Fires Basketball Coach
Shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. His performance there was terrible.

Whoever takes the job will have a heck of a rebuild job to do.

App has a nice facility though (not sure if they have dedicated practice facilities) so it could be attractive to someone.

Good luck in your coaching search Mountaineers.

RE: App State Fires Basketball Coach
Thanks NN, just about to post this. This news has been a long time coming, and everyone involved saw the writing on the wall. Capel has absolutely driven this program into the ground, and he inherited it in pretty good shape.
There is certainly a huge rebuilding job, and absolutely crucial to make a good hire here. Hopefully we stay away from ex Tar Heels for awhile, they haven't worked out to well for us. I, for one, really hope we can grab Bobby Lutz from NCSU. He did a lot of good things for the Forty Niners.
Matt McMahon, former assistant, is another one a lot of people think could be an option. I'd be happy with that too as we know he has a passion for App and Boone in general.

RE: App State Fires Basketball Coach
Honoring a four year contract to Capel has been a miserable experience.
Hope the next contract has much more of an out for performance.
Basketball has been good at App State many times and has been
heartbreaking to watch the past four years. Moving to FBS and the
expenses associated was given as reason for not firing him before.
Really we are just not renewing or extending his contract, not firing Capel,
it would seem.

We try to never mention that name. Even our old coach Press Maravich, Pistol Pete's dad, was better with his eyes closed than the unnamed coach that you named.
Wish we could find another gem like Bobby Cremins to bring down from Brooklyn. He did OK. Took us to the big dance before moving onto Georgia Tech.

That snake took our job for 12 hours then bolted back leaving us stuck with a midget from Oklahoma.

Rumors moving about former UNCC head coach Bobby Lutz. He is currently an assistant at NC State and is a Hickory, NC (about 45 min from App State) native.

Would burn some UNCC minds if he was hired and actually took our program anywhere, since the UNCC program is in the dumps after they ran him outta town down there.

Realistically, if App was going to make a move...this was the year to do it. You can sell some tickets next year just by pushing the new coach new league idea.

No matter how much SBC fans are depressed by our basketball. to App fans, we probably look like a step up in class.

Coming out of our four year self-inflicted term of honoring a bb coach's contract pretty much yes. We have seen some really good conference teams in the past and had a few ourselves. Playing basketball against bb conference mate Davidson when they had Ron Curry was an adventure.

Lutz presided over an awful UNCC program. I'd be real careful about taking him. UNCC went from NCAA at large bids to not even making the A-10 tournament several times under Lutz.

UNCC's fans are something else. I've never seen so much smack thrown by teams with losing records.

Lutz wasn't exactly a world beater. Think some App fans just want to annoy UNCC fans. Correction, Charlotte fans. Doubt Lutz is anything but talk.

You could certainly do worse than Lutz, but you could also do better.

I don't really think it would annoy many Charlotte fans because I don't know many that wanted to keep him. After he didn't get the Tennessee job and Michael Beasley decommited (and the rest of that class afterwards), he pretty much just mailed it in.

Recruiting became ****. Discipline on the court was awful. He deserved to be fired. What he didn't deserve was the contract extension we gave him the year before we fired him.

We only missed the A10 tournament 1 time and that was Alan Major's first year.

Lutz finished 12th once, but we finished between 2nd (2005-2006) and 9th every other year.

RE: App State Fires Basketball Coach
Cobb said during the press conference he would be "Pursuing a coach with head coaching experience, regardless of the level." He then backed off that a bit saying although he "didn't want to pigeonhole themselves" into that criteria. So we go from a guy with zero experience to wanting someone with HC experience.

Sure sounds like a Bobby Lutz type of statement. Others being mentioned are Southern Florida's Linc Darner who is the brother of former ASU player and ASN color commentator Tige Darner and Lincoln Memorial's Josh Schertz. Some of our more intellectually challenged fans are lobbying for Seth Greenburg and Bruce Pearl. I have no inside info, but have to think Mike Young of Wofford will be in the mix.

Pretty much sums it up. I am not sold on Bobby "Big Fish" Marlin down here. He is a solid coach, like the style of play but man has he had problems. Starting with the inability to recruit.

We went from Jessie Evans who had flat out studs, to having just 2 guys who can really play. It has been the worst decade of basketball is the history of Cajuns basketball. I include the time we had the death penalty.
