Guy has my vote on name alone. His body of work at VMI and Tusculum is not bad either.

I would like to go with Lavelle Moton, tons of passion and he gets a lot out of mediocre talent. He would build a winner.

PREDICTION:new coach will be announced on this thread (instead of a new one) and will be posted by someone from another conference.

So much big talk from Cobb about hiring someone with HC experience and someone who is familiar with the SunBelt. Fox fulfills neither of those criterias. Oh, and he just happens to come from our most hated rival. If it came down to dollars Matt McMahon would have been thrilled to be our HC for what we were paying. He has more experience under more coaches than Fox and is one of our own. The issue is hiring Matt Cobb would have been admitting he made a mistake selecting Capel and his ego won't allow him to do that.

Matt may be lucky not to be coming back right now.
Such a mess, let the clean up guy take care of it.
If he is so good will be gone in two years and give
Matt a good start.
Hard to believe Cobb got an extension.

never understood some App fans hatred for Cobb, he has grown the athletics to a level it has never been before, yes, he has made some mistakes, ie: the men's basketball program, but during his tenure he has had more success than failures. Hell, compared to the last AD who did absolutely nothing his last 5 years because he was planning his retirement CC is a god send

Watching our basketball program go from beating name teams to the pile of crap they came down to, and watching the academics of them suffer, find it hard to believe Cobb deserved an extension. If you only want to consider building a palace for the whine and cheese crowd to drink in, then that's your prerogative. Yes, he is better than some we have had, but some fifth graders could have probably been better also.

Now by some fifth graders do you mean a group of fifth graders or a select group of special 5th graders who are able to do it on their own?

I am a member of this Sun Belt board to come here and read/discuss App State in the broader context of our move to the SBC. Can we leave the Cobb bashing on Appfan.com? Thanks.

To be fair I wasn't bashing, just asking what he meant by some 5th graders, I'm not a fan of Cobb but I'm not against him.

Pre Cobb:

Attendance - 14k
Yosef donations - $600k a year
Stadium - 16k, worst press box, locker rooms, and weight room in the conference

Today

Attendance -28k
Yosef donations - $3M
Stadium, 24k, some of the best facilities available. Those luxury suites and club seats represent 33% of our season ticket revenue. I'm thankful to those donors that continue to give generously to App, even if they aren't the loudest on Saturdays.

Cobb certainly made mistakes, hiring Capel being the biggest. But 5th grader could do better, calling BS.

If you love the guy that's fine. He has done some good things. The ones that honestly look at things
know that Cobb didn't do most of that. For example, Armanti Edwards and 3 NC had more
influence on it than Cobb. People talk about not discussing it on this
board but some just will never let anything go. Fail to see how you
expect to change anyone's mind. You never do. A four year mistake in
basketball tops any contention of administrative foresight. Firing Moore and
then giving another year and handling it the way he did was another major mistake.
When it comes to that not so sure the fifth graders couldn't have made better decisions.

Let's review some facts:

AE was a senior in HS when App won the first title.

Before the first national title App averaged 23k per game and doubled Yosef Club donations. So what was the difference that year?

We haven't won a national title in 7 years yet Yosef donations are 25% higher than 2007 even during a down and now stagnant economy.

Cobb as I said has made mistakes and I'm not sure I agree with the extension given the change in leadership at chancellor.

You see, that is an objective discussion vs. hyperbole about 5th graders.

Did Cobb piss you off at an event?

I'll be at the Charlotte event this week, stop by and say hi.

The thing about hiring a coach with previous head coaching experience was too overblown.

Cobb has done a lot more good than bad at App State.

Could be the new chancellor wants to evaluate Cobb before deciding to go in a different direction. Everyone assumed when Dr Keel came on board at Georgia Southern that he would replace Sam Baker immediately, but it took right at 2 years for it to happen. I think he wanted to give Baker the chance to show he could run the department in accordance with the direction Dr Keel set for the athletics program, but when he couldn't then the administration went with another guy.

RE: App State Fires Basketball Coach
Cobb's done a heck of a job. Who would have done better? I'm grateful we've had him as long as we have. Outside of the Capel hire, he's done outstanding. Considering our location and the winter weather Boone experiences, App basketball is always going to be behind the 8-ball in drawing fans from off campus. App State is a football school first and foremost and always will be. Accordingly, we put the vast majority of our resources there. Like most things in life you get what you pay for. Even if we strike gold and get a super-successful basketball coach, we wouldn't be able to hold on to him. The resources simply aren't there. With all that said though, we most certainly should expect more from our basketball program.

Cobb has pissed off a lot of people. Using the old TV show Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader is actually too kind to some of the things he has done. We both know that changing football kickoffs to 3:30 was a major factor in increased attendance, then Armanti and the addition national championships took it to new highs. So if our attendance was high before why credit Cobb with it? Since you seem to have to argue am sure you will come back with some nonsensical thing. Moore hires his son, no football experience, and they pay the son more than any other assistant. Did Cobb act? No until long after. He tells Moore that he is gone, Moore wants another year, he gives it to him. Makes no comments or announcements for the next year, then when Moore acts surprised that he has just served his last year as football coach Cobb handles it very poorly, which makes the university look bad. Cobb approves a secondary Yosef image that was done away years before because is an exact embodiment of a Hollywood hillbilly. His response to my email, well look at the name of the school. There are many things that could be discussed, but to crow that Cobb is a great AD doesn't really make sense.
