(03-10-2014 10:19 AM)MichealBond Wrote:  Well the restriction already happens in a couple of the smaller conferences...

Ohio Valley has 12 teams, but only 8 make the conf. tournament.

America East has 9 teams, only 8 make it.

Atlantic Sun has 10 teams, only 8 make it.

Big Sky has 11 teams, only 7 make it in.

The SunBelt even gives the top 2 seeds in the standings 2 Byes in the conference tournament!

The list goes on...

I don't think it's fair at all for the team that fought and beat almost every team in their conference twice to be sitting at home while a team that won less than 10 games gets to represent their league in the NCAA tournament. You want to talk about merit...Isn't the whole reason behind being the regular season conference champ is that you proved that you were the best team in your conference through 14-18 games?

This isn't about being a hypocrite...This is about letting COMPLETELY undeserving teams into a national tournament to determine a national champion.

This is the exact opposite of letting a 8-4 Big 10 or Big East team into a BCS game while an 11-1 Boise team is left out...

My two bit opinion.

People mock the NBA and NHL for having meaningless regular seasons since they play 82 games to eliminate 14 of 30 teams but conference tournaments by virtue of the auto bid are essentially part of the NCAA Tournament by outcome though not in money or exposure. We eliminate what? Maybe 80 of 350 teams prior to the start of this prelim to the NCAA?

How do you convince fans to turn out to regular season games when the regular season is basically meaningless unless you are having a special year? The Sun Belt has had a helluva time getting even one of the top two teams to the conference final the past few years.

I think the double bye is one of the better things the league has done. It is a simple declaration. Seeds 9-11 haven't earned the right to gain the auto bid. Seeds 5-8 will get the chance but have to win four in a row. Seeds 3-4 will get the chance but have to win three in a row. Seeds 1-2 are rewarded for their season by needing to win two in a row. Personally I favored cutting seeds 7 and below and leave seeds 3-6 to win three to get in and seeds 1-2 needing to win 2.

32 NIT spots. 6 already spoken for.

Here's who we should cheer for. I'm assuming that Cincinnati, Virginia, Saint Louis, Villanova, Michigan, Kansas, San Diego State, Arizona, Florida, and Gonzaga are all in the NCAA tournament as an at large, meaning those conference will not use the NIT auto bid. That said, we should still cheer for those teams.

America East - Vermont
Big Sky - Weber State
Big West - UC Irvine
MAC - Western Michigan
MEAC - North Carolina Central
Northeast - Robert Morris
Patriot - Boston U
Southland - Stephen F Austin
Summit - North Dakota State
Sun Belt - Georgia State
SWAC - Southern
WAC - Utah Valley

So that's 13 potential remaining auto bids to the NIT (counting CUSA's) on top of the 6 already clinched.

Southern and three other teams in the SWAC aren't eligible for the post season. Same reason FIU men aren't in our tournament.
Stupid thing is they're allowing all of them in their tournament so you could end up with the 5th place team in that league getting the auto bid.01-wingedeagle

Add Robert Morris to the field. Down 18 to Mt St Mary's in the NEC championship game with 5 minutes to play.

Vermont lost a couple days ago.

It looks like whomever set this up knocked UTEP out with Robert Morris getting the autobid.

Of the 13 one seeds that have played, eight have lost. Not good for the NCAA or the NIT.

This is going to be another one of those nightmare years where some deserving team doesn't make the post-season (and no, I don't consider the CBI/CIT as "post season" to me, those are glorified scrimmages that a school has to pay for if they want it)

The bubble is a lot stronger this year than it has been in past years too.

Combine that with so many top seeds losing conference tournaments and you're going to end up with a lot of solid teams being left out.

Honestly, I dont' consider the bubble stronger this year. I think a lot of people are "Claiming" the bubble is stronger, but IMO, that's a BS excuse to get some more of the power-5 teams in.

But that's because I've believe a .500 or less team in conference should NOT make the dance unless they win their conference tourney. And that's if you're in the Big East, big-10, big-12, AAC, CUSA, Ohio Valley, etc.)

I definitely agree. Are any sub .500 teams expected to get at larges? I know a few .500 teams are, but I'm not aware of sub .500 teams on the bubble.

Right now a couple of BIG-12, BIG-10, and Big East teams will be getting consideration at .500 or less .

Southern lost tonight to Prairie View (the 8 seed). PVAM is two games away from making the NCAA tournament with a 12-20 record or something like that. But honestly it doesn't matter for that conference. Whomever wins is going into the play-in game.

Utah Valley (WAC) and UC Irvine (Big West) lost. Two more auto bids. Up to 11 auto bids. Only 21 at-large bids left. At-large slots are dropping like flies.

It's been a great year for NCAA bubble teams. So far, I don't think any team has stolen a bid. It's been a horrific year for NIT bubble teams.

Based on this NIT bracket projection, MTSU is in trouble. It was based on games through March 13. MTSU was one of the last two at-large bids and they lost. Plus two more auto bids (Utah Valley and UC Irvine) fell in.

If La Tech doesn't get in, the NIT will have 12 auto bids. Probably down to 20 at-large slots.

Terrible loss. Blew a 10 point lead late because they decided to milk the clock and quit running their offense.
