RE: MO State fans getting excited for SBC
Interesting comments on whether Missouri is a southern state and what type of culture they have. All I know is that the biggest rednecks I have ever met have been from Michigan, Wisconsin, Western Illinois, etc. so it is pointless to try and label a state in 2014. I only saw a couple of comments on the MSU board that came off like JMU fans. One in particular that made a comment that he didn;t want to become the Arkansas State of Missouri... news flash, that is what you will be and that is a good thing. That is really part of the appeal of MSU that they will be the second FBS program in the entire state.

Being in a southern conference is the absolute best thing you can hope for these days. That is where the best football players are found and it certainly did not hurt Mizzou.

I know some will call for more non-conference games in basketball, but I think I speak for many Sun Belt schools in wanting more HOME games. I like the double round robin schedule. It at least gives us some more quality home games. I am against divisions in basketball, even if we have 13 teams.

Back in the UNO and Denver days we had two unequal divisions for 13 teams and I did not like it...because not everyone had the same amount of games played.

Please don't take some off-hand comments by some of our fans as the general thinking of our entire fanbase. Personally, I'd love to be the "Arkansas State" of Missouri. I'm trying not to get too excited about any of the talk/rumors. But there are 2 things that get me pumped more than anything, 1) Moving up to FBS, and 2) being part of a southern conference.

The Sun Belt fits MO State and its current recruiting areas well. I think I can speak for the majority of us when I say that we'd be honored to be associated with the SBC.

I do not believe the Belt is adding but 1 more team. That gets us to 12 for olympic sports. I know some will say 22 games (playing all 11 teams home and home) is too much but if I am making the decision I would go for a complete double round robin-- 22 games. That guarantees everyone 11 home games right there.

I hope it is Missouri State that gets the votes. They will help Sun Belt basketball and baseball and if...just if NMSU gets to add all sports...the belt could become a two bid league in basketball.

RE: MO State fans getting excited for SBC
Right now Missouri St. may not help football that much in the Sun Belt but they would help immediately in other sports. THe only concern I would have right now is their attendance for football. I do think being in the Belt would help their attendance though.

All things considered I would welcome them. We need a school whose fans want to be in the Belt. If Missouri St. wants to become the 12th football playing school I would hope the other members would seriously consider it.

Because we are not the SEC and we really could use travel partners to help offset travel costs for Olympic Sports. Missouri State does not make since as a travel partner for anyone but Arkansas State. On the other had you don't use travel partners for Football so I suppose if we don't break into divisions for the Olympic Sports then it really wouldn't matter that much...

Arkstfan brought up the point that a Missouri State add would essentially create several clusters of schools, all within Driving distance of one another.

Cluster 1: App State, Georgia State, Georgia Southern

Cluster 2: Missouri State, UALR (Idaho), Arkansas State

Cluster 3: USA, Troy, ULL, ULM,

Cluster 4: Texas State, UTA (NMSU)

If you made a divisional commitment to keep Clusters together...You could probably divide it up any way you wanted and not face a lot of travel issues.

His proposal was to pair up App and the Georgia Schools with Missouri State and the Arkansas schools, while pairing up the Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas Schools. That puts one non football in each division, which is then paired for football purposes with NMSU and Idaho. Putting NMSU and Idaho in separate divisions.

Using a Cross over rivals deal like the SEC has would ensure that at no point would more than 4 SBC schools ever have to play both NMSU and Idaho in the same year...and those schools would rotate every two years.

Hate to tell you man, but Lafayette to Jonesoro is about the same time as Lafayette to Troy. It ain't close.

RE: MO State fans getting excited for SBC
I like Missouri State.

But I wouldn't expand the conference until its time to renegotiate our TV deal. I think we have 2 or 3 years left (correct me if I'm way off). I would tell Missouri State that they have an invite pending an increase in their football attendance. They averaged 8,700 last year. That needs to be at the very least 12,500 by the end of the 2015 season.

Then again, I don't know if it would help in the negotiations of our new TV deal with all the teams already in place (and through their FCS-FBS transitional years). If that's the case then I guess go ahead and invite them now. Springfield's 200,000 television sets (along with partial KC and STL) should help us in the new TV deal.

The vaunted championship game would not be part of the existing TV deal and if we add a member such as Mo State they will come in at about the time the contract provides for a look-in for possible renegotiation.

Ok well that probably makes sense. I guess that's why Benson is trying to put a name in place by June.

I do think the MoSt attendance needs to be addressed though. Moving to the Sun Belt should increase attendance automatically but I don't think it will double it (which is what they need).

I have played at their football stadium (7-8 years ago). The home side was fine but the away side (student side) was wooden bleachers if I remember correctly. The track around the field and the small pressbox/lack of suites or club seating can be dealt with in time but the away side really needs to be completely renovated ASAP.

Missouri State has already started renovating the football stadium.

Fyi, 8700 was the lowest I remember in my 20 years of following the Bears... Actually, that was one of the first times I remember being less than 10,000... Which is pretty good for a program with no playoffs since 99!

There appears to be more interest in Missouri State than the other teams combined. JMU and Liberty will not be an easy sell. My second choice is Jacksonville State at this point...however adding NMSU in all sports would be okay. They were a solid member when they were in the Sun Belt before. I would hate to be in their situation in the WAC.

04-cheers

Am all in favor of Missouri State, however the NCAA will not play games on attendance:

Missouri State Football Attendance Average per NCAA
8,700 for 2013 (which an even number seems like an estimate, which is normally higher than actual figures.)
8,710 in 2012
10,804 in 2011
9,028 in 2010
9,570 in 2009
8,958 in 2008
The Sun Belt and it's member schools will have to help Missouri State to get their attendance up literally.
Potentially could schedule what could be predicted as well attended games later in the season and do some
promotional things for early season games. Let's not try any cash drops like Georgia State though.

JMU is not a hard sell. They are the #1 choice and have been since last March 27. However who knows if they have any interest or not. THe clock is ticking. I think the conference is growing tired on waiting for them.

As I have said I have no problem with Missouri St.
