Dave Odom and the cocks were staples in the NIT, and successful if I recall.

Didn't Bobby Cremins almost leave GT for SC?

Where is Howland's main recruiting pipeline?

Wake should take a look at the guy at Toledo, he's done wonders in MAC country. Not sure how that would translate for the Deacs though.

Won it in back to back years, although pretty much every coot I know feels like the second trip was the beginning of Dave retiring on active duty. The wheels immediately fell off after the second trip.

He did take the coot job. For three days. It was a major slap in their face since Cremins played for them under McGuire.

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach
I would bet that Greg Marshall is the long shot candidate for the real candidates for this job will most limely come from the east coast area or one that has major ties there. I know GM is from that area, but he will be expensive but a school such as Wake shouldn't have issue's IMO forking out that kind of cabbage to pay for a top notch coach. I think Smart, Messiello, Paul Hewitt who coached GT, what about the coach at Harvard who played at Duke, and coached at Michigan for I can mot think of his name to save my life right at the moment who IMO is jot getting the Duke job when ever coach k decide to retire. I think WF has enough to offer, but will they get any bites for the big fish out there might look at them as a bottom feeder type stop in which I think they are not. Who knows for it will be interesting to see who gets it, and who is in the running for it.

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach
No one cares about South Carolina's pathetic basketball program.

I kind of think Marshall ends up at Texas when Barnes retires/is fired.

The guy from Toledo will probably get a look. He's not my favorite candidate.

If we miss on Marshall and Shaka while passing on Howland, then I hope we target Mike White at La Tech. He probably needs a tournament run this year to move to the top of the list. But I know he is on our radar. His style of play and personality would make him a great recruiter for us. His dad was the AD at Notre Dame and currently the AD at Duke.

Paul Hewitt will not be a candidate.

The Duke guy you're thinking of is Tommy Amaker. He will get a look but isn't a top target.

Wake Forest is no way, shape or form a bottom feeder program in basketball.

Question...why not Amaker at Harvard...played in the ACC and has done wonders also at Seton Hall...still don't understand why he didn't do better at Michigan.

Like I said Amaker will be considered, but his Harvard teams are winning because he's gaming the system there recruiting wise. I'm not accusing him of breaking any rules but he won't have an artificial recruiting advantage over his conference opponents at Wake like he has at Harvard.

They've only made the NCAA tournament 8 times in their history. Once in the last 10 years, only 3 total in the last 20, and only 4 total in the last 30. They've never won more than one game in the NCAA Tournament. Only 4 conference championships (division, regular season, tournament) in 69 years. 0 consensus first-team All-Americans all-time.

That's not a decent hoops tradition, sorry.

At Pitt, in NYC.

At UCLA, LA, obviously.

WF should be able to right the ship as long as they hire anyone who has an inkling of how to coach. We're lucky to have Larrañaga at Miami; hopefully y´all get someone comparable.

Marshall would be the best hire we could reasonably make. I've heard some rumors from a few folks in Rock Hill (Winthrop boosters) that we've already made some preliminary contact with him.

Valvano while the Color Man for UofL Basketball along with having a Local Louisville ESPN Show and his National Weekend ESPN Radio show is currently doing the ACC Tournament...my guess is he is here from sources in Greensboro that is the case with Marshall.

Just an update on the Marshall situation. According to some of our high level boosters, there is some mutual interest between be Marshall and Wake. But Marshall is currently wanting more money than our administration is willing to pay. They think a deal with him is unlikely at this point, but could change depending on how Marshall does in the tournament.

Mike White from La Tech is getting some interest from Auburn. Hopefully, they hire Bruce Pearl (someone Wake won't touch). White is probably the favorite candidate among our fans once you get past the Shaka, Marshall, and Howland level.

You guys need to pony up the money and get Marshall, regardless. Wake needs to get to the Final Four (IMO)

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach
No numbers are being leaked so it's hard to say without knowing what's being asked. But if he's asking for north of $3 million per year as most are assuming, then you have to ask yourself if that's better than taking a Ben Howland (three time Final Four coach) at $1.8 million. You could also probably pick up the next big thing in Mike White or Archie Miller for $1.5 million right now.

I think Marshall would be worth the money. But his success has come at the mid-major level with lots of Juco recruits. That won't work at Wake Forest (we don't accept Jucos) so he will have to adjust his recruiting. I personally think he could do that rather easily, but I understand why there is hesitation.

Other things to keep in mind, this will be our AD Wellman and President Hatch's last major hire. Both are expected to retire in the next 2-4 years. Do they want to hire an older coach like Howland that could right the program and let the next guy make his own hire relatively soon in their tenure or do they want to make a hire that will be there potentially for the next 20 or 30 years.
